No need for sadness...just mount the flash. You only need the adapter if you want a weather-sealed connection.

I have found that items, such as the GP-E2 for example, will not latch correctly without the adapter. They go some of the way but then get very stiff and I've not forced them further. So I don't think it's quite that simple for all items.

Interesting. My four 600EX-RT flashes, my 270EX II flash and the ST-E3-RT that I used to have all fit fine in the new shoes on my R3 and R8. Never owned a GP-E2.

It did that on one R7 for me, on the other R7 as well as an R8 and R5II the GP-E2 fits a lot better.

I wonder if later R7 units had a slightly larger hot shoe compared to the first batch.

Interesting indeed. I have two GP-E2 units and both have the same problem. R7 and R5 Mark II. It could be to do with the large rubber collar around the mount.

I would love a canon GPS unit for the new hot shoe. Preferably one with a smaller profile. I can’t see them bringing out one powered by the camera, otherwise it would be just built-in. I find the GP-E2 will work for a week on a single AA rechargeable battery.

That's good to hear. But I'm confused based on what I saw in the manual:

  • Speedlite Transmitter ST-E3-RT (Ver. 2)/ST-E3-RT
  • Off-Camera Shoe Cord OC-E3
  • GPS Receiver GP-E2
• To use the accessories listed above with the camera, you will need Multi-Function Shoe Adapter AD-E1, sold separately. For details, refer to the AD-E1 Instruction Manual.

Do all the functions on the EL-1 work?

I have an EL-1 as well and use it on my R5c (it has the multifunction shoe as well) rig for run and gun event photo/video and it works great!

What I REALLY want is for Canon to collab with DJI and make a shoe mount for the DJI Microphone system.

There was a rumor on here recently Canon is developing their own.

The canon wireless flash systems since about 2020 have had a problem maintaining connection because of the widening wifi band. I recall when I first got the 600RF's in 2012 they ere flawless, then suddenly they started losing connections, necessitating a power cycle on the flash themselves, limiting their service as a remote and reliable flash.

I recall Profoto revamped their entire \"air\" remote systems at around this time, while canon's introduction of the EF1 never fixed this problem. While a changing wifi landscape can;t be helped, canon could have circumvented this any allowing the flash heads to have a selectable interval where they reset their communications that forced (in effect what happened when you power cycle them) to re-establish connection.

Curious if folks here have experienced the same?

Seems like it's just a 2.4GHz device. That's been pretty crowded for a while (if anything, the widening of wifi into different bands should improve things there), but probably worse these days with the proliferation of IOT devices

I suspect the proliferation of mesh WiFi systems is at least partly the cause.

For those experiencing the dropped connections but not wanting to switch to another brand, if you’re ok with setting the power levels for your flashes manually, there’s a simple and cheap fix. Connect this $20 optical trigger to the PC terminal on your Canon flash(es) and trigger them with an on-camera flash.
