Can't decide on a good deal of 5D Mark 3 ($3000 budget)

Hello everyone,

A little bit about my history. I've been reading this website for a long time, but now I need your help with some decision. Before, I used to have a sweet time with 7D with 24-70mm 2.8L for about 3 months but sold it due to financial need at that time. Now, I have around $3000 and want to get involved to photography again.

My initial decision was getting 6D for around $1600 (a great local deal) and spend the rest on 24-70mm 2.8L again. But I've been surfing around forums and most people who owned 6D recommend to get 5D3 if possible. If that is the case, I have to setting with few prime lens like 50mm 1.4 to learn more about photography and save a bit more for new lens.

I found a great deal for brand new 5D3 for $2700, should I pull the trigger ? Or getting a brand new 6D for $1600 and 24-70mm 2.8L ? Or perhaps, a brand new 7D for $1000 (local) and spend $2000 on 24-70mm 2.8L II ?

Please give me constructive opinion.

i'd say it depends on some things like, what are you shooting and what do you plan to shoot? Is photography your main source of income? Do you foresee it becoming a greater portion of your income?

Mostly, it will mostly people in events, hanging out with friends or few sport occasions. I don't think I can make an income with photography now. Perhaps, it might in the future but most likely, it will not be my main source of income.

Wait for the canon 5D3 refurb sale to return with the 2300$ pricing. If you love the AF performance of the 7D, you will hate the 5D2/6D.

I'd certainly not get the 24-70mm L MK I, I had five and they were not worth the price. Finally, after hanging back for reviews of the new MK II version, mine arrived this afternoon. I already had my FoCal AFMA setup ready. The settings with a quick run were -1 at 70mm and +1 at 24mm.
The contrast was excellent, lending to the sharpness.

I hope to do a more careful analysis tomorrow.

I've owned two 7D's, two 5D MK II's and two 5D MK III's along with several 1 series. While the 7D AF is good, I found my 5D MK II to be a much better overall camera. Certainly it did not have bad AF.

If you want a excellent body for low cost, get a low usage 1D MK III. Its far better than my 7D's were, and is available for pretty low prices.

Depends how much quickly you can save to another big purchase. If it is within the year, I'd opt for the 5DIII. Perhaps you might be able to afford it with the kit lens, 24-105? Barring that, I'd opt for the 5DIII now and a fast prime.

One of the advantages of full frame is thinner DOF, which needs good AF points. After using the 5DII, it's nice being able to select an outer point, and still nail focus with a fast lens.

For your purposes I'd go with a 6d + a 50mm 1.4

Better body will make the shot easier, but without lens you can not get the shot.
