CR2s not showing up as thumbnails on my Win 8.1 laptop

Hi!

So I got the 7D2 and thought that the raw file being CR2, would show up because my CR2 from the 5D3 shows the thumbnail - and double-clicking the 5D3 file displays it.

Apparently the software gods at Canon thought otherwise...

Trust me, I Googled and downloaded three installers from Microsoft that swore that they would solve my problem. But they did not so I turn to you folks. What magic did you do to solve this issue.

Same file type but each new camera that comes along usually has its own codec. That's why we all have to wait several weeks for adobe et al to update their RAW processing software for new camera releases. That applies to windows explorer as well - the software needs to be updated with new code for any camera model that uses a new codec. Unfortunately the only codec pack I can find that microsoft provides for 8.1 was published back in September 2013, so obviously this won't cover the 7D mkII.

The only work-around that I can think of would be to convert to DNG (assuming you're a lightroom/ACR user) since it is supported by windows 8 out of the box.
