I have been reading several of the articles in the Canon Knowledge Base on the new AF system--very helpful. I have the following question after experimenting with the settings: Setting aside the full 61 point setting, why would I ever select the 15 or 9 point options rather than opting for selection of the cross points? It looks like the coverage is the same or better with the cross point setting and the knowledge base makes the case that the cross points are more powerful.

Also, is there a setting that will leave the point display visible for a longer period of time or make it permanently visible?

Thanks

The main reason I can see for having fewer points available for selection is that it can speed up the point selection process (fewer joystick pushes) if you frequently change your AF point.

The "AF point display during focus" setting allows you to have all the points always visible (All Constant option).

Canon has published a how-to with examples of when you might use the different AF settings, including focus points. It is for the 1D X but the 5D MK III is virtually the same.

Its here: http://downloads.canon.com/CDLC/EOS_1DX_AF_Guide_CDLC.pdf

Your link is not working--at least for me. I have read that article and found it helpful. Thanks

for some reason, the link was not allowed. I've corrected it to:
