First user-installable lens firmware for a supertele. The 300-600 II had to be sent in.

Canon made 300-600mm and 300-600mm II zoom lenses? How come nobody told me ???

Short hand – 300/2.8 II, 400/2.8 II, 500/4 II, 600/4 II.

Note to self: Doctor Neuro does not have a sense of humour. Move along, nothing to see here.

But, could we please have a 300-600/4.5?

See, I'm not greedy. I didn't ask for f/4 ;D

Any owners give an idea of how good they think the 200-400mm is.
It's a pretty heavy and large lens -- is it worth it?

After 25 years of owning EF lens from 11-24 to 800 5.6 I must say this is the best super-tele that Canon makes. I have even used it with exceptional results with the 2X MK II TC (1.4 not engaged), It was the lens of choice for my recent trips to Tanzania, Botswana, and Kenya. And compared to the 600 4.0 and 800 5.6 it's a light weight.

I can concur. Excellent lens edge to edge. I can handhold for a bit and even carry for more than half the day without too much pain. Great for sports with a monopod or gimbal/tripod. I've never really used a 100-400, so I can't compare with that. You look really cool with this lens. And at f4, its not out of the question to use inside.

Had the lens. Got the much cheaper Sigma 180-600. Cant see the difference in IQ between my now and then photos. Of course f4 I miss. But I cheat myself by saying 5.6 gives depth of field better for wildlife story telling. LOL.

Thanks for the replies. I have the Canon 600mm , its a great lens but it is unwieldy.
I know an owner of the 200-400 and they love it.
I already have the 100-400 so a 200-400 is hard to justify but its always tempting.
The 100-400 II feels super light compared to the 600mm

Installed the update in a few minutes, no issues, well done Canon.

Cant say I've ever had any issues with this Lens and I purchased it the moment it was mentioned by Canon, took quite a while for it to become an actual Lens, but since receiving it this lens has been to The North Pole, The South Pole, Namibia and most of East Africa, Hudson Bay Canada, Franz Joseph Land, Central Australia, and it just keeps working, I can't sing this Lenses praises high enough. I still love my 600 f/4 II with the 1.4x III, but I could live without it if I needed to, not the 200-400 though.

Its going to be interesting to see how the new Nikon 180-400 f/4 1.4x compares.

I upgraded my lens with the 1.1.0 firmware and it caused nothing but problems. There is a very audible clunking sound as the lens tries to focus which was never there on the 1.0.0 firmware. Additionally the lens DOES NOT focus as fast as it did before and it searches more for focus regardless of the focus mode (single point, 5 point cross, 9 point grid) and as a result it is not as consistently sharp as it was before on the 1.0.0 version firmware.

I tried to have Canon Support send me the 1.0.0 firmware so I could go back to the base firmware but they said they could not do it. They told me to take the lens in for repair. Not so easy since I have daily assignments for my newspaper on which I use this lens extensively.

Totally unhappy with the 1.1.0 firmware update. My advice is DO NOT install the 1.1.0 firmware unless you are really experiencing problems with your lens.
