Huge gap in Canon pro-sumer products

There is the aging 7d (summer 2009) at $1500 or less
Now there is the 5d3 at aobut $3500
and the 1dx at $7000 give or take

From what I have seen and read here there is nothing planned for a new 7d.
This means Canon has 2 new cameras that based on the high price will appeal to a
tiny percentage of the market. Don't get me wrong, they look amazing and will certainly
please those that have $4000+ to get into this high-end market.

With the economy not so rosy in the past years how can they ignore the sub $2000 market
where the masses are? I know they surely sell a lot of sub $400-600 rebels yet I cannot undestand
leaving out all of us advanced amateurs.

Yes, I could get a 7d but after having a 40d for almost 4yrs getting a camera as old as the 7d would
not be something I would do (and they are still expensive in my part of the world).
I shoot a lot of indoor sports and the 40d is not the best for this. I would like the 1d4 but it is still
way over my budget (I do not get paid). I am sure that a new 7d would have better IQ, better low light performance and perhaps even faster AF.

We probably wont know much if anything about a 7d2 or 70D until maybe a few weeks before it is ready to be released... until then everything is pure speculation... Canon keeps too good of raps over details of future products. Also dont forget the 5d2 is still in production and still "current" despite being trumped by it's newer 5d3. And then there's rumors of a possible 5dx (above the 5d3 and below the 1dx) and a replacement of the 5d2, a some sort of entry level full frame. We may be looking at the beginning of a big shakeup within the canon lineup.

maybe canon is making room for a mirrorless system in the 1000-2000$ range.
don´t take that too serious...

7D is still a great Camera at its price point.

Many are guessing the new 7D will edge into the $2000 territory and a 70D will edge into that $1300 range. Other reports are that a cheaper full frame is coming down the pike. We will see what canon does in 3 weeks with a video DSLR which may be both still/video.

One would think there would have to be a Canon 7D replacement, if there is none, then there will be mighty big gap between a $1000 T4i* and a $3500 5DM3. Canon seems smarter than that to me.

The same thing is happening at Nikon, the D300s is due for a replacement, if there is none then there is a big gap between D7000 at $1200 and the D800 at $3000. There are rumors that the D400 is full frame or is going to have 24MP, who knows, no real info as of yet.

Both companies need to have a flag ship crop sensor body this time around, maybe next time they will be lesser full frame bodies.

I guess it'll depend on how long the 5dII sticks around, like someone mentioned above. At around $2000-2300 it fits the gap pretty well.

As a fellow 40D user, like the OP, I am thoroughly excited to take the big upgrade from crop sensor to 5dIII!
