Hi all,

I was hoping for some advice on my camera. I was doing a full day of video with the 5d mk ii and towards the end of the day the camera kept stopping the recording. The next day I did a photo shoot with it and the images were a little weird looking, especially the skin tones and colours. I sent it off to Canon and they have replied with:

Inspected unit, checked flange back and it was out of range.


Quote to dismantle unit, supply and fit listed part. Adjust as required. Reassemble, clean, check and test all functions.

I did drop it about a year ago, the lens took the brunt of the fall and I haven't had these issues until now.

Does anyone know if too much videoing affects the camera?

Yes, all HDDSLR's will overhead the sensor if used for a long period of time. There is a sensor internal to the camera that will stop the video. Image quality will suffer as well.

There should be no permanent damage, just let it cool down.

You have two totally different topics, if you dropped your camera on the lens, not only will the lens have potential damage, but the lens mount and mirror box also take a hit and can be bent out of specification.

However, using your 5D MK II for more than about 30 minutes nonstop for video can overheat it. It depends on the room temperature or outdoor temperature, so the timing varies a lot. The 5D MK III has improved cooling of the sensor to allow use for longer periods without overheating.

Sony's A55 and A33 DSLRs would overheat in as little as 3 minutes!
