Firmware Notice: EOS R5: Firmware Version 2.2.0

Firmware Version 2.2.0 incorporates the following fixes and enhancements:

  1. Improves security features. A password must be set initially.
    a. Adds the ability to review the history of any changes made to the password, network information, or other settings.
    b. For more information, please refer to the 'Setting a Password' section in the Advanced User Guide on cam.start.canon.
  2. Enables firmware updates to be performed when the camera is connected to the internet and new firmware is made available on Canon servers.
  3. Adds support for the Software Development Assistance Kit (EDSDK/CCAPI).
  4. Adds a function that simultaneously protects images when they are rated.
  5. Adds the ability to use up to 8TB of CFexpress cards.
    a. Note:
    i. Cards larger than 8TB require low-level formatting by the camera.
ii. Cards larger than 8TB are treated as 8TB cards.
iii. Cards larger than 2TB cannot be used for firmware updating.
  6. Adds compatibility for Peripheral Coordinated Control with RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM lens.
    a. With RF16-28mm F2.8 IS STM, Peripheral Coordinated Control only applies to still photo shooting.
  7. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur during Bluetooth communication due to interference from other Bluetooth devices.
  8. Fixes an issue in which Err70 may occur when repeatedly shooting in the "High-speed continuous shooting +" mode.
  9. Fixes an issue in which HDMI output may momentarily stop when [Screen Off] is activated in the Power Saving settings.
If the camera's firmware is already Version 2.2.0, it is not necessary to update the firmware.

To be honest I installed this firmware because of the password function, but very quickly found it to be a pain, as I had to input my password each time my camera woke up. It would have been much better to have to input the password when the camera was physically switched on. Anyway, that's not the purpose of this post.

Has anyone noticed increased battery drain using 2.2 and the R5? I usually go out with 2 spare batteries for a day's photography and return home having used one and a half, maybe two. Yesterday I went out and used nearly three! Same amount of photo's same lenses, just more battery drain.

Anyone else noticed this?

I updated last week and wish I would of held off. Yes I am seeing a faster battery drain and the AF has been inconsistent, my hit rate has dropped since I ran the update.

Thanks Mike, I tried the old open SD door move but I couldn't get past the "you have the latest firmware" message. I will do some additional research and I appreciate the disclaimer ;)
Petapixel has a post with a video that has a second method of opening the battery door.

Canon does not support firmware ‘downgrades’, so I take no responsibility for anything that may go wrong (that includes potentially bricking your camera).

Hi everyone,

I’m curious about the future firmware possibilities for the Canon EOS R5 and wanted to ask for your opinions.

Do you think Canon might eventually add features such as:
  • Waveform monitor for more precise exposure when shooting video,
  • 3:2 open gate recording, similar to what the R6 Mark III now offers?

Are these functions technically possible on the R5, or are there hardware limitations that would prevent Canon from implementing them?

I’d love to hear your thoughts or any information you might have.

To be honest, I fed back to Canon some easily implemented improvements which they could have added to a firmware update, but they just ignored me and offered the useless password protection (I offered improvements to that, but again....). So I wouldn't hold out too much hope.

Hi everyone,
I’ve noticed that the Canon R6 Mark III has the COLOR / RATE button that lets you quickly switch Color Modes, Picture Styles, and Custom Picture profiles.

Do you know if Canon plans to add this feature to other cameras, such as the EOS R5 or R5 Mark II, through a future firmware update?

Has anyone heard anything official (or unofficial) from Canon about this?
Thanks!
