An odd patent for an EVF. It looks like if you move the eyepiece to the LCD screen, it’ll change display area to just show there. Once the eyepiece is off the screen, it’ll go back to a full screen LCD. While I don’t imagine the screen is as high resolution as most EVFs, this could have some kind of a low cost solution.

As pointed out on the forum, it looks like this would be an accessory that would attached to a flash shoe.

Looks like you need a hot shoe or something similar to attach the eyepiece to the camera.
To me this does not go together with "low cost camera".
Otherwise I'd agree.

Here is a different translation.

The device works with touch screen controls.

TECHNICAL PROBLEM

[Problem to be solved by the invention]
[0008]
However, although a camera shake photograph is reduced in external EVF in above-mentioned patent documents, since an image sensor and its drive circuit are equipped, composition will become expensive intricately. Composition is simplified and the hood (for example, ETSUMI, Inc. live view hood E-6273) which can be seen while shading and expanding the whole display part surface as a more inexpensive thing is known. However, in order to cover the whole display part, in order that an outside may also separate the distance of an eyepiece position from a display part largely, in stock photographing, this hood cannot take the stable shooting posture, but becomes easy to carry out camera shake.
[0009]
Then, the object of this invention is providing the display control of inexpensive and easy composition, the compact viewfinder with outside which cannot carry out camera shake easily, and the camera corresponding to this external viewfinder.

Just build 2 cameras one with EVF and one without.

or

If canon really wants to be bleeding edge, build a camera that is compatible with Virtual Reality glasses.

This patent is stupid. Part of the screen needs to be high resolution for it be usable as a viewfinder. Cost of making this will be more than the camera itself.

You are assuming that its on a high end camera, I would not assume that.

Patents do not guarantee cost effectiveness. A patent gets used when it is cost effective for its intended purpose.

A cheap magnifier for a standard LCD versus a expensive EVF. No one said it would be a super high resolution, it does not need to be to compose a image in bright sunlight.

It will likely never happen, but point and shoot users who have only the rear LCD might be happy with a cheap add-on that is compatible with a low cost camera.
