Price watch...best time to buy?

Hello everyone - is there any rhyme or reason to the best price for Canon bodies? I am looking at the 6D at $1269 which seems like a fine deal although historically I am the kind of guy who washes his vehicle the day before it rains.

With the 6D II around the corner is there any reason to wait for better pricing or should I buy a 6D now?

It's a decent enough time but as you seem to know well, the moment you buy there will be a deal elsewhere. I think the big question is, do you have a need for it now or can you do a wait and see. You can't take any pictures with a wait and see body.

If your only concern is price - and you want a 6D, look at Canon Refurbished -- comes with same one-year Canon warranty ... Altho, Canon charges tax, and B&H only charges tax if you live in NJ or NY - B&H or Adorama sell Refurbished also, but not always, and sometimes less than Canon site. Watch for it ...

We've bought Reburb in the past from Canon and B&H, and it looks brand new - bought a 7D Refurb once with four shutter clicks - that's right, FOUR ... looked like a brand new camera, and it comes with everything but a Canon box - box is white. 6D refurb available at Canon site now for $1199 ... plus tax. SO, that's about a wash with the $1239 you saw ... sorta, unless you buy from a store new with tax.

I'm a big fan of refurbished, but right now the body only is selling for just $70 more new from authorized dealers and the body with 24-105 is actually less new than refurbished.

Of course the 6D II will be announced a week after you buy the 6D. That's just the way it works. On the other hand, even after the 6D II is announced, the original may not drop much in price and if you go for the II you will be paying the early adopters premium. If you are willing to wait a year after introduction you might get a good deal on the 6D II, but with Canons you can expect a year or so lag time before the price settles in.

My *guess* is this is probably a good price to buy at... unless you're willing to wait a considerable amount of time.
This body has been out for a while and it seems to have been at this all time low for a while. It'll come down if a 6Dii is released but that is likely not anytime soon.
I myself am wishing, waiting and hoping for a 5Div price drop soon to purchase!

Another option is the CLP (Canon Loyalty Program) Not ure if you are aware how it works or not. If not...

Call Canon, it's only done over the phone.
You buy a refurb item, i.e. 6D body, at regular refurb prices -10% or so. Additional discounts vary.
You send in any Canon body within a certain time frame, I think it's 30 days, after receiving your 6D.
It can be anything, most folks use an old broke Rebel film body they have or purchased on Ebay for $5.00.

I've used it twice and it works very well. You get the same brown box as a refurb with the same warranty.

So that would come out to ~$1079

I'd wait and see what the 6D2 has to offer if you can. You might consider a step up IF Canon is not to scaried to put some CURRENT high end features. Frankly, this whole bit of throttling thier cameras is ridiculous. Even more when people support them.

I am sure there will be plenty of 6d's on sale thereafter.

My 2 cents worth.

The original 6D came out just weeks away from my best friend's daughter's wedding which he wanted me to photograph, so I paid the full price for it which if my memory serves me right, about $2100. Now four and a half years later, my feelings is that the price for a new one won't go down much lower. They will just one day disappear. I have a friend who was looking at purchasing one from the Refurb store on the last sale, but she waited too long, and the store has not replenished its stock for quite some time.

You could purchase one new now and sell it later for approximately what you paid for it. I don't expect the Mark II price to fall to the near half price for a couple of years. So, go ahead and get one - it is an incredible camera, especially with good glass. If you have never owned a FF camera, after the purchase, you might never go back to crop sensors.

The price of a 6D keeps dropping, and will likely hit 1000 or less when a new model is announced.

Been there done that. over and over
Private is probably right, it will probably drop some more after the mark II is released. Depending on the initial release price of the 6D II, it may or may not be effective immediately. No one knows..

If you're considering buying used, the 6D price used is very likely to drop shortly after announcements and come back up a few months after release. In my area, disregarding new releases, used camera gear is cheapest around November. This is a trend I've noticed for a number of years.
