According to the specs on usa.canon.com, the 1.3x and 1.6x crop modes produce identical size CR2 files to 1.0x images:
Crop/Aspect RatioImage File Size (Approx. MB)
Full-frame60.5
1.3x crop60.5
1.6x crop60.5
If you plan on using this body for shooting events in MRAW/SRAW and 1.6x crop when reach is needed to speed up your workflow (with the option to still use full resolution for low shutter count outings), those hopes look to be dashed.

Could Canon have incorrect data listed on their site, or is it just as simple as a full 50 MP CR2 file with a flag set for cropping in the raw editor?

Could be both, but they have the file sizes right for jpeg :-o

If it's just a flag for jpeg and the in-camera preview, Canon can expect bucketloads of sarcasm until the June release. And probably only Canon's own DPP will honor this flag while other raw converters like Adobe/DxO/oss will leave it up to the user to expertly apply the crop tool :-)

It does sound like something Canon would do though, "when in doubt, software-fix it":
 • in-camera hdr for lack of dr on 5d3/6d
 • multi-shot noise reduction for high iso noise on crop
 • new: software crop flag for high jpeg file sizes on 5ds

Wow...

The ONLY reason this camera was even on my radar was because of this possibility. I would practically never need 50MP, BUT the crop modes caught my attention. The thought of possibly "consolidating" crop and FF into one body for both needs did cross my mind there. Say, shooting an event in mRAW format and then boom, 1.6x crop mode for extra reach (when needed). Then the 7D could be left at home...or with stellar implementation, even sold(!).

Major disappointment, if true. No extra buffer capacity, either. Oh well, nice thought though. Seems like a VERY specialist camera indeed. The implementation of the crop modes was all I was interested in - if I still have to deal with gigantic 60MB/50MP files, it defeats the purpose.

Still, this camera will likely make a lot of folks happy. But doesn't seem like it's for me. Let's see what the 5D4 brings.

The good news is: Even if you botched the framing of a 5ds shot, you can alway "un-crop" your raw file in post (there's a Lightroom plugin for that) to magically gain more space around the edges :->

True. But personally, would it be worth the major hit on buffer capacity (1/2 that of 7D) and RAW file size? Not really.

Definitely not a camera for sports or speed...or even for general all-purpose use. OK for its target crowd, but not so for me. Fair enough. Still, I'd love to see the reviews and pics from this thing...

Still holding out some hope that a mistake was made...anyway we'll see.

Indeed, not that I'm in the market for a $4k camera, but this would be the killer reason for me not to get it. 60mb raw file size, and only the cooked m/s-raw to reduce it? Thanks, but no, thanks.

Probably not, I was wondering about this from the first time I heard it - and a "crop" mode has been long discussed before.

The problem is that you probably cannot read part of the sensor, so you have to crop in the image processing chain - and unlike jpeg which can be cropped in a lossless way in no time, Canon obviously didn't find a feasible way to do it with raw.

Btw: Nikon does have a DX crop mode for their FX full frame cameras - do they apply it to their raw files?

I am not seeing the information you quoted. I do see the RAW info for full frame, but there doesn't seem to be any sizes for 1.3 or 1.6 RAW files.

Scroll down to drive system, and look at the raw section of the table.

And since the file size is unchanged between FF RAW and 1.xx RAW, it can only be assumed that the cropping is done in software, not in camera - meaning you still have the same buffer capacity and massive files as if you were shooting full 50MP RAW...

Furthermore, the mRAW and sRAW modes (which are actually smaller) are only for FF.

I just wanted to run a thought passed you guys with regards to this massive 50mp file size.
There are two potential paths here for my future budget, one very expensive one which will take years to achieve, and a new one involving the 5Ds, which may prove to be infinitely cheaper….depending on the answer I get from this question!!

Path A is the purchase of a 5DIII, a large tele L series lens, like a 500 or 600mm and a 1.4xIII – this is the expensive route which would take me a very long time to achieve.
Path B is the purchase of a 5Ds and trading my current 100-400L for the new version II model.

My question is regarding that massive 50mp file from the new 5Ds, would you consider that cropping over 50 or 60% from a 50mp file due to shortened lens reach (as achieved from choosing path B) will still offer excellent IQ from the subject? The file would still be 20mp in size after cropping, so that’s on a level with my current 70D, but as I have never seen a 50mp image on my computer I’m just wondering if my theory is a good one? I know that there is never any competition to having the correct focal length lens, but this is difficult for me to realise due to the prices, so is my way of thinking here a good one???
