Recommend Cheap Second Body

Have owned a 60D since December 2011, first DSLR. Have become addicted. Want a second body now to have a different lens available at some shoots, but also for taking on camp outs where I am worried about ruining the 60D. Thinking that T3i is the best choice because the body alone is so cheap and still get a similar IQ to the T4i and the 60D. What is your vote?

Whatever rebel tickles your fancy when Canon has the next refurb sale. I picked up a T3i for ~350 after tax

40D or 50D used? They have some weather sealing. Could come in handy when out camping... They are also Magnesium-alloy bodies, which I would take any day over a plastic one.

If you don't want to upgrade and use your 60D as your 2nd body, a rebel is a natural choice. I agree with boateggs on where to buy. Canon regularly has 20%off sales on their refurbs & once or twice a year has up to 30% off. I picked up a T2i kit a few months ago for $315 including shipping, sold the lens for about $125 which put the T2i body @ around $190. I use it as my point & shoot/"crazy" camera. I actually worry more about whatever lens I have attached than I do about the camera.

& Believe it or not, even the T3 takes an okay photo in a pinch, fyi it does has a live histogram & 3 shot bracketing, if you're not doing a lot of cropping. Those you can pick up 4 even less than the T2i if you watch Craigslist carefully. But I do recommend testing the T3 b4 buying, stepping back to 12 mp is very hard for most DSLR folks...

+1 more for 5d classic. Can be found for similar prices as t3i, and some might say ( me being one) that it's even an upgrade in many ways. Built as strong, or maybe a bit better than the 60d,, but doesn't feel, "as new" you can tell it's an older model, but after taking pictures on it, you soon forget all that. Plus, full frame gives you more focal length options teamed with a crop. Assuming you have some EF lenses.

Depending on your lenses, the 5D C is a great option (+1 to the others who mentioned it)

but if you don't want to go that path, a I think a t4i would be good.

If you are worried about destroying or damaging your camera while camping, have you considered a pelican case? It is a hard shell case, waterproof, customizable foam padding, etc. I have been using them for years canoeing and they have saved my gear on more than one occasion. We use them at work.... I stood in disbelief as $200,000 of electronics slid off the deck of a frigate and splashed into the Atlantic, then it bobbed to the surface.... We hauled it aboard and it was dry and worked!
