From a marketing perspective, that wouldn't be a sound strategy because when dropping two digit xxd bodies, they'll forfeit the 40d legacy and there would be no stepping stone between xxxd and xxd. But other than that I still think you're correct, but the new cameras fusing 60d/7d will be called 70d, while a 5d2 successor will be called 6d.

I still don't know why people are so stuck on if it is a full frame camera, then it is a pro camera and needs a XD name. What makes a camera a pro level camera or not is NOT the sensor size. It is all the other factors, durability, usability, performance, etc. (i.e. the 1D , 1D MkII, III and IV) The 7D deserves the XD moniker.

A full frame entry level camera can be just that an entry level camera. There is no reason that the full frame entry level needs a XD moniker, and lots of that it could and should be an XXD camera.
