So who thinks there will be a 7D Mk. II now?

From what I can tell the 5D Mk III is not a replacement for the 7D because as a 7D owner it's not an appealing upgrade. The AF system is obviously superior and the low light performance will be significantly improved, but the price tag and slower FPS seem to remove the 5D Mk III as a 7D replacement? So does the 7D line live on or just get replaced by the 70D?

Crop users are a very different breed of shooters. Well 60D/7D users that is. Perhaps FF is viewed by some as a logical path from the Rebels but please, not all of us want or need FF. Why they keep getting thrown together is beyond me. I seriously do not think that the 5D3 has anything to do with the 1.6 market.

Agreed. I am going to get the 5D3 (I have the 7D now). I figure it will give my lenses a whole new use. 24-70 and 70-200 through FF will be much different than with the 7d. In my mind it's like getting all new lenses, or at least that's my justification. My 70-200 will be able to be used in much closer quarters.

There will certainly be a 7D MK II. The 7D is a huge seller for Canon, and competes with the Nikon D300s. When the D400 is announced, a new 7D will follow. Its a fairly consistent pattern with Canon new models announced about the same time frame as Nikon. The Nikon D4 was a exception, and insiders say it was ready last summer, but delayed by part shortages.

It looks like they refresh it starting from up market. Next should be 7d2 or it's succcessor pushed one zero down, what also makes sense. I'm sure they will also want refresh the entry level quite soon. So no later than in April we should see 7d's successor

whatever it gets called I have no doubt there willl be a king of the crops coming.
I think canon have seen the error of their AF ways and it will get the new 61 point AF
perhaps the existing 19 point AF will make it into the rebels and the old 9 point system can be retired to the canon museum.

The 5DmkIII is not a replacement for the 7D because they are two completely different cameras, for two completely different tiers...... :o
The 7D is Canon's top of the line cropped sensor body, and the 5DmkIII is Canon's 'semi-pro' full frame sensor body, they are not in the same tier, nor compete with each other outside of someone just wanting to save money.

There will be a 7DmkII (or whatever it gets called) unless Canon decides to get out of the cropped sensor market - which is not likely given the mass of consumers that do not need or even know how to benefit from a full frame body.

If the rumors hold true and the 5DmkIII is $3,500, I see a giant gaping hole in the price spectrum for a 7DmkII to fill. The 5DmkII is now replaced and the 7D is aging (very well, but aging nonetheless). Seems like a good place to insert a new crop sensor camera.

Definitely a 7d II eventually, but there is a lot of top end camera this year, so I can't imagine it before next year...announced at the end of this year at earliest. I really hope its a near 5d crop camera, or that Canon considers making one. For those who prefer, perhaps need, a crop sensor, they should still get 5d quality.

Depends on the 5DIII price that will be announced tonight.

If it's $3500, then yes, the 7D line will live on a happy life for a couple more years.

But if the 5DIII is announced at $2699 tonight (which is my bet), then expect the 70D to replace the 7D this fall as the top-of-the-line 1.6x model - with 22mp, 19 AF points (or more), 6fps, and 100% viewfinder.

All that for $1299. Let's see who will miss the 7D then.

Well, that sounded good until you got down to the 6fps.

No question there will be a 7D II, probably around the time of Photokina.

As others have said, these are two different Cameras with different formats. On another thread, (http://www.canonrumors.com/forum/index.php/topic,3716.msg79569.html#msg79569 I laid out what I see as the likely specs for a 7D II, and won't repeat them here, but a quick summary is that a 7DII with very similar specs to either the 5DIII or the old APS-H 1D in an APS-C format seems very logical and likely to be a very good seller.

I can even imagine a one-piece gripped body version as a 7DX marketed to sports and wildlife shooters who used to be the target for the old 1.3 crop sensor.

6 FPS is WAY slower than 8 FPS. For birds in flight, I need all the FPS I can get. This 5DIII is not what I need for bird photography. If I did weddings, I would be all over it. But, I don't really do weddings except for on rarest occasions of utmost need. This is a camera wedding shooters should be all over. This is a camera which hopefully yields great promise for the 7D Mk II. Perhaps it will have 2 stops of ISO improvement, and 2 notches faster FPS. Likely, it will start out retailing for over 2000...
