Sony Announces the 61MP RX1R III Fixed Lens Camera

does the r6 have the r3 sensor?
The original R6 had the 1dx3 sensor, if I remember correctly. I don't think we've seem the R3 sensor reused yet, I hope it will show up in the R8II or R8V! I'm being spoiled by the R5II that allows ES and flash, I wish all my camera supported that. Even outside the focus-bracketing use case.

Thanks for correcting me.
I'll take a guess and say they'll eventually have every camera ES only and at that point, they'll have to allow the flash. If recent history has any indication a year or two after a lot of people here begin to get upset and we see posts like, "I made a CanonTumors account just to express my frustration on this topic!" "I sold all my Canon gear to buy brand x because of this!" and "I'm going to seppuku in front of Canon Japan!!!" (user never heard of again).

This thing is tiny and undercuts the price (and physical size!) of the Leica Q3 by a considerable margin. Especially the Q3 43. The 35/2 lens is well regarded by many, have to wait and see how it performs with the 61mp sensor. If it's good (and it probably will be), Sony will sell as many of these as they can produce. A lot of people have been waiting for this revised version of the RX1R series.

Pretty dissapointed with Sony with this release. The camera actually makes sense, its the pricing that is absurd. This camera is made up of parts that are old. The lens is 10+ years old, the sensor is 6 years old and the AI processor is now 3 years old. Had they released the camera 3 years ago at this price maybe it would've made sense.

The A7R released at $3,900. Add in a a comparable F/2 lense and your at $4,600 then add a slight premium for the compact size and you're close to $5k. But waiting 3 years and releasing the A7CR which is basically the same camera with IBIS, interchangeable lenses and only a slightly bigger body for much less makes no sense.

This also makes me think they don't have much on the horizion. The A7RV is getting old. If the they release and updated version with a new sensor right after shoving the old sensor in this $5k camera that is only going to tick of the people who just paid for this thing.

It seems like Sony is more into a 4 year release cycle now. At least with the A7 it seems like that. So that would mean there is no new A7R until Q4 2026.

That's coming up pretty soon. They previous RX1RIII came out over 9 years. So they wait 9 years and put what is supposed to be their best photography focused sensor in one of their most expensive cameras and then turn around a realease a better photography sensor a year later?

This is why it made sense to have this camera out 2 years ago. They could release the updated A7RVI in 2026 after 4 years and then release the RX1RIV in 2027 after 4 years with that new sensor.

But now it makes it look like Sony took a bunch of old parts and is trying to sell them at a premium to increase margin. This is echoed by the fact thay they are charging $300 for a thumb grip among other absurd accesories.

The A7IV is a decent hybrid camera but was a modest step up from the A7III in terms of specs and is looking long in the tooth with only being able to do 4K60 with a crop. The Canon R6MII and Nikon Z6III are both better and cheaper.

Sony as a brand in cameras doesn't have heritage. Their clame to fame was jumping in the mirrorless arena first and making the cameras with the best specs at the best prices. A year ago I was very optimistic about their future and it seems like starting with the A1II they just decided to take their foot off the gas and try to sell old stuff over and over to the client base they built.
