Right, so the 5D3 is being sold, at profit, for $3500. That's £2,225. VAT is currently 20%, so that's an additional £445. So bottom line is it should cost a maximum of £2,670. Rather than the current recommended retail of £2990.

I'm not sure how this works - surely international retailers are miffed that international chains can make much more profit?

Also worth noting: Ordering it internationally stands the chance of not getting charged duty. And even if you did, it works out £300 cheaper than buying it from a UK site. Just saying.

Current pre-ordering price has already come down to £2890 as there isn't such a rush to the sellers for the 5D3. I was there when my friend bought his yesterday from Jacobs, delivery is due end March. They ordered hundreds and as of yesterday mid day they had only sold 7

Sounds like market forces are going to work for us.

I just phoned Jacobs and they still said £2999.

And that they have taken loads of backorders, partly because of Focus, and partly cos of people coming in to the Manchester store.

The $3500 price in US is including the American tax (vat) and profit. When the camera is shipped in UK the taxes and profit is not included ( witch the raw price is far less than $3500). in my opinion the companies that imports the camera is adding at least 100% profit.

that why the prices are so high compared with US.

We got the sale at Focus - and the info from the manager ... sounds like the usual sales talk then ...

That sort of preempts my next question i.e. who best to buy from in the UK:
a) for the best chance of having one in my hands before the end of March?
b) for the best price?
c) for the best after sales service should anything go wrong e.g. faults/product recalls etc?

Unfortunately camerapricebuster.com seems to lag behind a little on lowest prices e.g. currently it still shows the Jacobs preorder price as £2999. Clicking through to the Jacobs webiste also still shows their preorder price at £2999. Did your friend order at Focus on Imaging and receive some sort of show discount maybe? I was going up again today but I'm full of a winter cold at the moment (at least, I think that's what it is although there's a small possibility it might be a psychosomatic reaction to the prospect of my bank balance shrinking by £3K) and feeling pretty rough.

Edit: sorry, it seems I was still typing whilst others were posting, so my Focus question has already been answered!

I'd still like to hear your recommendations as to where to buy though.

The $3500 US price is before tax. Tax differs between cities in the US so all MSRPs do not include tax. If I were buying local tax would be 6.5% but nearing 10% as I approach Chicago. But 0% from Amazon :-D
