that would be a real suprise and welcome i guess. :)

you know what i mean, a successor aimed at the studio/landscape crowd.
a successor that pushes resolution and DR into sony realms and beyond.

Even Canon can't keep something like that secret so short before photokina. Would be nice, but NO CHANCE IN HELL, I'm afraid... ;)

to be clear i don´t mean they will announce it at photokina like the 7D MK2. :)

i mean like announcing that they are working on such a camera.
like official acknowledge that a high megapixel studio cam is in the making.

1D and 1Ds were parallel product lines. They merged into the 1Dx. That's not going away.

but there is no god given rule that will not change again?

and to be honest the 1D X is maybe meant to be just that.
but it is NOT a successor to the 1Ds.

a real successor would have it´s focus on more MP and a higher DR!
not more FPS, less MP and a action AF.
stuff a studio or landscape shooter does not really need.

from my experience 1D MK4 owners are more tempted to buy a 1D X than 1Ds landscape shooter. 1Ds owner sure buy the 1D X too, but not because it´s their dream camera.

i sure would not mind more FPS in any camera but i don´t need a AF like the 1D X has. and if i have the choice between 10 FPS and 18 MP or ~4 FPS and ~30-40 MP i go for the later.

No.

The 1D/1Ds created product confusion amongst Canon's customers.

The 1DX is a unified product to remove confusion.

That's what I think too. However, if a new high MP 1 series comes out next year that supplements the 1DX, that might be considered as a follow on to the 1DS MK III. (The MK III was a high MP body when it came out, and, if you recall, people were complaining about too many MP ;)

The 1Ds III successor is the 5D MKIII.

barely.
there is a reason why landscape shooter want more.

all this talk here is not because people are overly happy with the 5D MK3 when it comes to landscape/studio. ;)

don´t get me wrong it´s a great camera. just not as great as it could be for studio/landscape.

they are not the brightest then? ;)
someone who pays a few thousand dollars for a pro cam should be able to get it.
at least after he read the product brochures.
or did they go into a shop, point at a expensive camera and buy it? ;)

what is that for a logic? ;D

leave some customers in the rain because the naming scheme sucks?

Ya, nobody who might buy one was confused.
Obvious feature differences steering users between cameras: After using a 1D2 and a 1D3 I bought a 1Ds3. Sold it - too noisy and slow for birds, I had thought I would be happy with throwaway pixels. Went back to the 1D3.

And, substantial price difference. Only thing in common was they used the same lenses.
1DX was a true merging of the products lines. A very high frame rate is the main reason there weren't more pixels on this first generation body, I believe.

...from your point of view as a birder it might even be a success.

something i don´t need.
but i would need (be happy about) more MP, better DR.
and i guess most studio/landscape shooter would.

that is why the 1DX is no real successor for me.

This happened 3 years ago, and Canon said at the time that it was unifying them.

If there is demand, a new one will happen. Right now, sales of cameras are very slow, so a new model would need to appeal to a lot of buyers in order to release it. I'm sure hat test cameras by the dozen are around, but putting one in production is a hugely expensive operation. That's how Canon operates, they do not go after smaller markets but leave that segment open to small companies that are nimble and can produce new models with a quick development. Fujii comes to mind.

The answer is no and it´s a shame.
I gave up waiting.

Bought a D800E + the superb 14-24mm f2.8 for Landscapes and have a 7D for birding.
Sold every Canon lens except my 600mm f4.

Canon THEMSELVES actually never said the 1Ds and 1D lines were merged into the 1Dx. Read Bryan Carnathan's site. He doesn't even know.

" the Canon EOS-1D X Digital SLR camera.* As the new leader in Canon's arsenal of professional DSLRs, the EOS-1D X will be a high-speed multimedia juggernaut replacing both the EOS-1Ds Mark III and EOS-1D Mark IV models in Canon's lineup. "

Whilst I might hope so (my 1Ds3 dates from November 2007 and is going just fine) I suspect not. When something that's a real step up for the work I do comes along (whatever it's called) I'll get one.

Yes, the 'merger' was the official line, although several Canon reps I've spoken to have happily agreed that the 1DX is far more a full frame 1D.

As to the comment earlier:
"The 1D/1Ds created product confusion amongst Canon's customers."
I'd prefer not to think that people buying such kit were so dim and clueless. Confusing for marketing is easier to understand ;-)

I bloody hope there is a high mega pixie successor announced at Photokina as I'm fed up waiting for a replacement to my 6 year old 1Ds3. :'(

Not moved over to the dark side yet (Nikon) as too heavily invested in Canon glass.

Come on Canon ... give us what we want. We've waited long enough.

I'm sorry, where does it say the two lines are merged?
