this is my wishlist for 5D Mark III:

Autofocus 19/45 cross-type AF points - AF points spread all over the frame
A more accurate spot-meter linked to AF point
Extended Dynamic Range
16-bit color
5-6 Frames per second
100% Viewfinder
User Configurable Auto-ISO
ISO 12800 usable, about 2-3 stops or cleaner than 5D Mark II
GPS
Dual axis electronic level
Bigger, Better and Brighter Screen
Dual card slots
Better weather sealing

It's good to have wishes. Most of your list are 1D X features or near enough, and as such, I think it's unlikely many of them will make it into the 5DIII. I think these are reasonable expectations:

5-6 Frames per second
User Configurable Auto-ISO
ISO 12800 usable, about 2-3 stops or cleaner than 5D Mark II
Dual axis electronic level
Bigger, Better and Brighter Screen
24-36 MP

19 AF points might happen, but spread no wider than the 5DII. AF point-linked spot metering, dual card slots, and better sealing will remain the province of the 1-series.

I think this is a $4,000 camera, but you know what, I would buy it hands down! While I will be getting the new 1DX, I really hope Canon comes out with a camera like you describe in a small form factor (aka without the battery grip integrated for when we need something smaller to carry).

I would settle for Neuro counter suggestion above as well!

I'm beginning to think that Canon may add some one series features and higher MP in a new camera model. It would likely cost $3.5 - $4K, and be the FF equivalent of the 7D with the usual incremental improvements.

The current price gap between $2200 and $6800 is pretty large, so I'm expecting something that fills the gap.

There is no reason to discontinue the 5D mk II, it still outperforms cameras in its price range, and is selling well.

Obviously, I, like everyone else would want all those things with no price increase, but... is that realastic?

Thank you neuro,

what do you think about not having just the middle point usable?

I think however many AF points the 5DIII has, they will be all or at least mostly f/5.6 cross-type, and the center point will be an f/2.8 dual cross. That would mean that like the 7D, all of the points will be pretty good, the center point a bit better with a faster lens. Because 15 sounds better than 9, I speculate they'll make all 15 points selectable (unlike the 5D/5DII where 6 of the 15 points are invisible), probably with a C.Fn to limit selection to 9 points (center and outer). But I think the spacing of those 15 points will be pretty much the same as the current 5D/5DII AF points.

Still, I do think that for most people, having usable off-center points will constitute a significant improvement over the 5DII.

Improved gapless microlens sensor with no less than 22Mp
Much better sensor dust cleaning system
Brighter viewfinder, 100% coverage
Same ISO range and noise quality as 1DX
4-5fps
Multiple exposure feature (up to 5 pics)
Better handgrip ergonomics (slightly larger)
Video: Don't care about now but would like to keep same specs at least just in case (no video-stills split model)

Extended wish-list:
Automatic installation of firmware updates once prompted to file
Eliminate buttons on the left side of the LCD screen, touch screen menus preferable (same 3" screen seems enough)
With new miniaturized circuitry Wi-Fi could be in-camera, not external WFT-E4.

I think the majority of people would be happy with a 5D3 that is much like the 5D2, but with the little incremental upgrades and feature improvements of newer bodies, and a 7D-like autofocus system. A new sensor of some sort is a given, and it's safe to say it will have lower noise and improved imaging characteristics.

I fully expect to be let down by Canon in a major way, probably autofocus.

I expect this thread will have numerous replies from especially vocal posters who want it to be their very specific ideal dream camera (36MP! I don't need autofocus! Get rid of video! Monochrome sensor! And so on...).

if that came true how much would you pay for it? i think it would be around $4k and how many MP do you want it to have? :P

I'd add keep existing battery and body shape so existing L brackets work on it

I don't know, but if I were to get a FF camera, I would totally want it to... do... awesome things I don't know about, because the only FF I've ever shot it my spotmatic... Perhaps a focus assist light, like the yellow one my Sister-in-Law's D90 uses?
