Fujifilm today announced the X-M5 26.1MP camera. The notable feature of this camera is the size and weight of it.

I have a soft spot for the EOS-M as it was a well-built little camera. I had three of them. The sensor was older, and the AF was anything but fast, but the RAW files were surprisingly malleable for infrared photography. Fast forward to what seems like an eternity, where the EOS-M line is discontinued, and Canon is all in with the RF system. Now Fuji circles back to its own past and makes a very compact APS-C camera.

Here's the X-M5, slightly bigger than the original EOS-M at 112mm x 66mm and 38mm (with a minimum non-grip depth of 33.5mm). It weighs a mere 335 grams. For comparison, the EOS-M was 109mm x 66mm x 32mm and grip? What grip?

This is the kind of camera that I'd love to see Canon circle back around to. The M100 and M200 were okay for beginner cameras, but they were also excessively feature-nerfed. This little X-M5 can do it all. I'm tempted to get this camera because I'm not sure what Canon is thinking of when it comes to its APS-C lineup. We will see what next year happens with Canon in this regard. I hope it's the year of Canon APS-C.

The X-M5 is equipped with the back-illuminated 26.1-megapixel “X-Trans™ CMOS 4”*3 sensor and the “X-Processor 5” high-speed image processing engine, enabling high-quality shooting. The dial is located on the top surface for switching between “Film Simulation” modes, which allows users to enjoy various color tone expressions as if they were changing photographic films. Combined with the AUTO mode on the mode dial, even first-time digital camera users can easily enjoy the richly colored image creation that is unique to Fujifilm.

In addition, powerful digital image stabilization, a high-performance built-in microphone, and in-camera SD card recording at 6.2K/30P 4:2:2 10bit support comfortable video recording. The newly added “9:16 Short Video Mode” in “Vlog Mode” makes it easy to shoot the vertical videos that are popular on social media.

Compact and lightweight body and product design for enjoying photography

  • The X-M5 weighs approximately 355g and measures approximately 111.9mm in width, 66.6mm in height, and 38.0mm in depth. The extremely lightweight and compact body for a mirrorless digital camera makes it easy to carry around and enjoy photography every day.
  • Despite its compact size, the X-M5 has the high-quality appearance characteristic of the “X series”. Symmetrically placed dials on the top surface highlight the beauty of the camera.
High-grade appearance
Design of the top surface
  • The film simulation dial is located on the left shoulder of the top surface. The user can intuitively switch between a total of 20 “Film Simulation” modes according to the subject or scene, allowing the user to enjoy a wide variety of color expression.
  • A mode dial on the right shoulder of the top surface allows the camera to automatically recognize the best shooting mode for the scene in AUTO mode, making it easy for first-time digital camera users to capture high-quality still images and movies.

Equipped with a high-performance sensor and high-speed image processing engine to achieve high image quality and high-performance AF

  • Equipped with the back-illuminated “X-Trans™ CMOS 4” sensor with approximately 26.1 megapixels and the latest high-speed image processing engine “X-Processor 5”. This feature enables high image quality photography with low power consumption.
  • Equipped with Face / Eye AF. In addition, the subject detection AF developed using deep learning technology enables AI detection of animals, birds, cars, motorcycles, bicycles, airplanes, trains, insects, and drones*4.
  • The latest AF predictive algorithm provides high tracking performance for moving subjects and high precision AF in low-contrast environments.
  • *4 Set the Subject Detection Setting to “BIRD” when you want to detect insects and to “AIRPLANE” when you want to detect drones.

Supports 6.2K/30P video recording, etc., and offers a full range of video recording functions

  • The X-M5 is capable of 6.2K/30P 4:2:2 10bit in-camera SD card recording, and supports 4K/60P and 1080/240P, providing a full range of video recording capabilities.
  • Equipped with powerful digital image stabilization. It is effective not only for minor camera shake but also for large shaking that occurs when shooting video while walking.
  • For the first time in Fujifilm’s digital camera lineup, three built-in microphones are equipped. Users can choose from four microphone directivity options: surround, front, back, or front & back, depending on the situation. The X-M5 is also the first to feature a steady-state noise reduction function, which reduces noise that continues to sound at a certain frequency, such as the noise from an air conditioner.
  • “Vlog mode” allows users to change shooting conditions intuitively by touching the LCD. Improvements in the number and placement of icons make video recording even more intuitive. In addition, the new “9:16 short movie mode” allows users to easily shoot vertical videos popular on various social media and smoothly share the captured content.
  • Two new bit rates, 8Mbps and 25Mbps, have been added to the list of bit rates that can be selected in the “Media Recording Settings” when shooting video. This shortens the transfer time to external devices such as smartphones and contributes to shortening the time required to upload captured video directly to social media.

Optional Accessories

Cooling Fan “FAN-001”*5 (already on sale)

  • This cooling fan can be attached to the rear panel of the camera body without a cable, supporting long hour shooting and video recording in a high-temperature condition. The power can be supplied to the fan from the camera body.

This grip enhances mobility and camera’s hold while adding tripod functionality. It supports comfortable shooting for self-portraits and low angle shots, where it is normally difficult to hold the camera’s position. As a tripod, the TG-BT1 can be used for a wide range of applications from group shots to tabletop still.

  1. Love the title @Richard CR! My first reaction after reading the release was: this is M space! This could be the missing EOS-M6. I wish it had tilting LCD! Then I came to share my impression here and read your note on it!

I had 3 EOS-M's(full spec, 720nm and color), and those things could fit in such a small packing space. while Fuji hasn't adopted the same consistency of the EOS-M lenses in terms of size, they do have a alot of smaller lenses

Canon now is the only vendor without a small APS-C camera - I guess we'll see what next year brings
  3. I have two original EOS M bodies and the very good EF-M 18-55 + the incredible EF-M 1.4 32 which perform very well for slow moving to static objects/subjects in not too contrasty environments! Video is meh, but for time lapse it has some special features with magic lantern.
M-5X would be the much better camera but at 899 EUR it is more expensive than R10 (888€) and maybe 1/2 R6 ii at the time the R6 iii is introduced.
R10 and R6 are non-comparable but this might be my route to spend the money - I will stay with my EOS Ms but for those in the fuji system or "system changers" this camera looks more than interesting!
