On 7th January 2026, FUJIFILM Corporation announced the forthcoming launch of the “instax mini Evo Cinema™,” an entirely new device and a part of its “Evo” series of hybrid instant cameras. Scheduled to be launched in Japan on 30th January 2026, this device will bring video recording functionality to the already highly popular “Instax” series.

Fujifilm Instax mini Evo Cinema

The Instax mini Evo Cinema is based on the hybrid instant camera concept, where the user shoots digitally through the LCD screen, enabling creative effects, and then allows the printout of selected images on Instax Mini film. However, the main addition to this camera is that the device can shoot videos lasting up to 15 seconds. The user holds a shutter to record, pauses by releasing the shutter, and compiles several videos.

The user then chooses the picture from the video that is to be printed in the form of an Instax photo, which carries a QR code that allows the playback/link to the complete video. After that, the user submits the video data through the exclusive “instax mini Evo℠” app on the server, where the video is stored for download for two years. The print obtained through the video scan enables instant playback/downloading, thereby providing the capability to “hand over the video” in physical form.

The feature that catches my attention is the “Eras Dial™,” which boasts 10 era effects that will translate video and photo images to give a vintage look and feel of a particular era. These include “1940,” which will give your images a three-color film style, “1960,” which will give your images the look and feel of 8mm film, “1980,” which will translate your images to 35mm color negatives, and “2010,” which will give your images the look and feel of early smartphone app images. The effect of each era has 10 levels of intensity.

Design-wise, the camera looks like it has taken design cues from a FUJICA Single-8 from Fujifilm, which is an “8mm” camera that came out in 1965, boasting a vertical grip, a high-quality black-and-gray design, analog controls, and a printing lever that simulates a film advance as if it were a manual film camera. The viewfinder and grip are great additional features that offer support for monitoring as well as optical shooting options.

The associated smartphone application provides added functionalities such as video editing capabilities, featuring the merging of up to 30-second video clips, template experiences for cinematic effects, poster designs for printing, smartphone printing, as well as enhanced Wi-Fi connectivity in addition to Bluetooth capabilities.
