GoPro’s New Max 2

It’s been six years since GoPro introduced the Max. The new 360 action camera offers what GoPro claims is “true” 8K 360-degree video. Apparently, this 8K resolution does not include any overlapping or unusable pixels, so you get the full 8K resolution from the video output. GoPro also states that no upscaling or AI is used. It’s all in the cameras.

The 360 uses two type 1/2.4 sensors, which are smaller than the original Max. GoPro has stated that this camera will not be as suitable in low light as the original Max – an interesting design decision that apparently was made to keep the camera as small and compact as possible: the larger the sensor, the larger and heavier the lenses.

The Max 2 has a slew of video resolutions, frame rates, and aspect ratios;

  • 360:8K: (7680×3840) @ 30/25/24 fps
  • 5.6K: (5376×2688) @ 60/50/30/25 fps
  • 4K: (3328×1664) @ 100/90/60/50 fps
  • Single-Lens:4K: (16:9) (3840×2160) @ 60/50/30/25/24 fps
  • 4K: (9:16) (2160×3840) @ 60/50/30/25/24 fps
  • 4K: (4:3) (4000×3000) @ 60/50/30/25/24 fps
  • 1080p: (16:9) (1920×1080) @ 60/50 fps
  • 1080p: (9:16) (1080×1920) @ 60/50 fps

In POV and Selfie modes, the camera features an additional set of frame rates and video modes, as it utilizes only one lens.

  • 360:8K: @ 30/25/24 fps
  • 5.6K: @ 60/50/30/25 fps
  • 4K: @ 100/90/60/50 fps

Video can be encoded with GPro’s GP-Log with LUTs and up to a 10-bit video bit depth.

The Max 2 can also create 360 still images, with a resolution of 29MP. You can then use the Quik app to zoom, frame, and extract your final image from the 360 field of view.

The Max 2 features an extensive list of video and still modes that were also found on the original Max, including Burst Photo, Interval Photo, and Night Photo modes. For video modes, users can utilize the Max 2’s Night Effects, including Star Trails and Light Painting, as well as TimeWarp, multiple time-lapse modes, and scheduled recording.

GoPro LIT HERO

GoPro’s latest budget action camera features a novel design that may brighten your smile. The front of the GoPro LIT Hero features 5 LEDs arranged in a square pattern, which can serve as a continuous light source without the need for an external one.

GoPro considers this their lifestyle camera with the motto of “whatever, whenever” video and stills photo capture. The integrated LED offers three levels of brightness, and the camera also comes with a miniature diffuser for those who want a softer light source.

Everything else remains the same as last year’s Hero model, although the price has increased by up to $270, $70 more than the original non-LIT version.

Features include;

  • UHD 4K30/1080p30 Video, 12MP Photos
  • 2.7K60/50 2x Slow-Motion Video
  • HyperSmooth Video Stabilization
  • Rear LCD Touchscreen
  • Voice Control, Wi-Fi Connectivity
  • 16.4′ Waterproof without Housing
  • 1-Hour Battery Runtime, USB-C Port
  • GoPro Quik App

Fluid Pro AI

Wrapping up today’s GoPro release is the Fluid Pro AI gimbal. This is a multi-camera gimbal developed for creators. This version offers subject tracking and stabilization for more than GoPro products.

The gimbal features interchangeable mount adapters, making it compatible with GoPro cameras, smartphones, and compact point-and-shoot cameras. There are limits, though; it can only support cameras weighing up to 400g, so no DSLRs or larger mirrorless cameras.

This version of the Fluid Pro AI offers 3-axis stabilization with almost a full 360 degrees of rotation. It features AI subject tracking in both the forward and rear-facing directions. GoPro states that it’s able to lock on to a person’s face or body and track them within the frame.

The gimbal also features an integrated fill light and is designed to remain operational for up to 18 hours.
