Canon to Announce New Gear on February 4, 2026

On February 4, Canon is going to announce the RF 14 f/1.4L VCM, RF 7-14 f/2.8-3.5L STM Zoom Fisheye and a limited edition version of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III. All I know about the limited part of the G7X3 is that it'll be a graphite grey.

The full specifications of the lenses aren't known, but you can probably guess on the VCM lens and I imagine the fisheye will be similar to the EF 8-15 f/2.8L in size.

What will the new gear cost?

The #1 question ahead of a product launch is what things are going to cost, and I am 99% sure on the pricing. If I'm off, it won't be by much. I will do an update on pricing if I hear something different.

USD Pricing

  • Canon RF 14mm F1.4L VCM $2599 USD / €2539
  • Canon RF 7-14mm F2.8-3.5L VCM $1599 USD / €1829
  • Canon PowerShot G7 X Mark III $1299 / (Only One Chain Will Sell It in Europe)

I don't think anyone will be surprised that the 14mm will be the most expensive lens of the VCM L prime series. I had hopes and dreams about it being less money than that, but “hope is a dangerous thing“.

Before we make comments about the price of the limited edition PowerShot here, let's wait and see what it actually is. If it's just a paint job, have at it.

An extra half stop and still size-matched to the other VCM lenses? Kewl, but sadly I know it's just a typo.

Any word on the announcement / preorder timing?

Doh... I had just been reading about the new 85 1.2 Sigma.

  2. Pricing seems quite reasonable.
Remember how much the old EF 14mm L II did cost. And it was an f/2,8!

Wide is expensive.. 10-20 isn't cheap.

I think I'm owed some barter credit, I'll be cashing in on that for the 14!

  3. So, if true, the price for 14mm sounds too steep...
More than you are willing to pay, you mean? That's fine.

For some comparators, the Sigma 14/1.4 is $1800 and is much larger/heavier than the current Canon VCM lenses, so if the Canon 14/1.4 conforms to that lineup then it will be much smaller and lighter. The 1/2-stop slower Sony 14/1.8 is $1750. Taken together, I think that means the $2600 price is 'reasonable' given the landscape. Yes, it's expensive. So is the 24-105/2.8, etc.

  4. The price of the G7X III is totally insane if it's really just a paintjob.
For a 6 year old camera that was $600-700 in 2020. Not even worth it, if they added a firmware update to this.
Canon, you are not Fujifilm and this isn't a camera with an APS-C sensor. *smh*

Too steep for a certainly excellent 14mm f/1,4?
Such lenses need extremely expensive optical glass, are produced in rather small quantities.
But you can get 14mm for far less money, if you don't need f/1,4, there's the 14-35 zoom.
I find this price to be very acceptable, not cheap, but ok.

Paint jobs are sometimes tremendously expensive.
Metallic paint option for cars? Between $500 and $5000 (or more), depending on the make and model. Real cost? $100 maximum. 😛

  7. Similar to Nikon's body/mid priced telephotos vs Canon options, it may be cheaper to buy a Sony kit just for astro - especially if you aren't using it that much.

    eg using the A7iii or A7iv (even astro-modded) + FE14/1.8 (or Sigma 14.1.4) + FE20/1.8 (or Sigma 20/1.4)

There is also a greater chance for discounted or second hand bodies and lenses so hard to argue against.
I have waited for any discounts for the RF20/1.4 or second hand in the Australian market and nothing available.

I have no doubt about the quality of the RF lenses but Canon is happy to price themselves out of specific niches.

Hard to argue against the the Sony f1.8 versions (for only 2/3 stop difference) or the Sigma f1.4 versions. The question is whether the difference in performance is warranted for your use case.
Of course, for those with deep pockets, it is a no-brainer to stay with Canon.

I know you were kidding, but a car is actual work to paint vs just mixing some colors into a plastic mold.

No, in a car factory, it's just a matter of using a metallic paint in a fully automated robotised painting process, instead of a non-metallic one. It takes a few seconds for the paint-robot to switch paints. The paint itself costs a few $ more if it is a metallic one. But the customer is charged lots more. A "special" taste is what you pay for, the same applies to special edition cameras. Vanity always had its price...

Fujifilm has horrendous AF. No, Canon is not Fujifilm. Canon's AF is on a different level.

It is now, it wasn't back then.

Rereleasing the G7X III as a modern product is just going to give Canon a bad reputation for AF, but I'm sure the target audience won't mind.
