One of the most anticipated cameras is the Canon EOS R6 Mark III. The EOS R6 Mark II is the bestselling full-frame camera in the Canon lineup, so a replacement needs to come sooner than later.

Canon will be announcing the PowerShot V1 globally, along with the Canon EOS R50 V and Canon EOS RV on March 26, 2025.

When Can We Expect The Canon EOS R6 Mark III

We have been told that Canon is scheduled to announce the Canon EOS R6 Mark III and two new lenses in late May 2025. There has been a loose roadmap for 2025 that has been given to one authorized retailer we know of.

We initially reported to expect an announcement in Q1 of this year, but that has obviously changed. It looks like Canon is all in on APS-C for Q1.

Specifications haven’t changed all that much since the rumored specifications last year. We don’t put a lot of stock in detailed specifications so far in advance of an announcement.

New Canon RF Lenses

We don’t have any information of what two lenses we’ll see alongside the Canon EOS R6 Mark III.

Canon EOS R6 Mark III Rumored Specifications

There will be a couple of Canon feature firsts we have been told. It looks like the 6 series is going to be used to bring new features to the EOS R lineup. For example, the EOS R6 Mark II was the first EOS R camera with precapture.

We’re told that Canon has a new flippy screen design that mimics recent Sony mirrorless cameras. It will flip out for the usual selfie rotation, as well as up and down without flipping it out.

We’ve also been told that this will be the first Canon camera with an OLED external screen. This feature I would put at 50/50 of happening. I’m not sure OLED external screens are a needed feature, even if it would be cool.

Summary

There’s not much new to report as far as specifications go. We still expect it to see a 24mp stacked sensor that would be related to the sensor in the Canon EOS R3.

We also expect a move to at least one CFexpress Type B card slot, it’s time.

We’re going to see the DIGIC Accelerator and it will have the autofocus system from the EOS R5 Mark II. We don’t expect to see eye-control autofocus.

We think you can basically expect a lot of the features we already see in the latest Canon full-frame cameras.

We’d be surprised if there were any real surprises, and we’re going to get what we expect.

  1. Would be great to know the timing of the announcement, if you get that information beforehand. Stay up late on 3/25 for a midnight preorder, or get up early the next morning for a 6a preorder. IIRC, the last few have dropped at midnight Eastern time.

  2. Well with the next Canon announcement scheduled for late march, I wasn't really counting on the R63 hitting that Q1/early Q2 time window anymore.
At least no regret on not going on with my hypothetic plan to grab one while in Japan to get it cheap.
We'll have time to see the final spec sheet

  3. Please, at least 30 MP...
The rumor is pretty solid on 24mp...

I am one who always wants more resolution, but I have to say that the difference between 24 and 30 is not that "differentiating"

  4. It is kind of weird that the R6mkiii and Sonys a7mkV were both rumored to be released (or announced) in Q1. Now both companies seemed to have moved their announcement dates. I hope they don't play "chicken" and wait for the other one to make the first move. If so, maybe Nikon has to move in with a new offering to get things started 🙂

  5. Please, at least 30 MP...
No....24mp is the Canon norm for full frame, 45mp is the exception.
Get used to it because the needs of video make 4K (and other) resolution slicing of a 24mp sensor much easier than other sensor resolutions.
We will have this 24mp standard for a long time to come.

For me the bigest upgrade will be the EVF resolution. All the other features are a bit meh....

  6. We will have this 24mp standard for a long time to come.
If it's any consolation, the new 24 MP delivers better spatial resolution than the 30 MP sensor in the 5DIV and EOS R.

=> how do you know that the R6ii sells more than the R8?

If it means tilt and hinge like a9iii or Z8, I'd like it! It enables shooting from hip both in landscape and portrait oreintations.
