MIA
Had a good accident with a kitchen knife and my thumb. Let's just say I miss what's gone.

There are no pictures.  :)

New Camera Info
I received some badly translated information about an upcoming camera announcement. I don't know what model this would be.

Specs
– Articulating screen
– Metal body, but smaller than 50D
– Upgraded 15.1mp APS-C Sensor
– 720p Video at 30fps
–  Electronic Level
– New battery & battery grip

Sounds like a new Rebel with a little more build quality. Maybe a 60D?

  • Sounds more like the 2000D :-D

I always thought the 1Ds4 will be launched together with the 2000D…

From the marketing perspective, Canon is currently doing fine in the 500D – 7D market. I don’t see why they need to add another model there.

1000D on the other hand, is getting walloped real bad by the competitors.

  • yikes… keep chopping off parts and you will need eye-cotrol AF in order to get anything in focus ;)

  • I hope the 60D is 15mp. Not sure I like the sound of a smaller body. But, I guess it’d be cool as long as it doesn’t have the skinny Rebel grip.

  • Must be the 2000d. If it’s the 60d then all present users of xxD line will head on over to 7d. I’d rather upgrade than stick with xxD line and buy new gripfor it.

  • Very plausible spec for a 60D.

To successfully compete with Nikon’s D90, the 60D definitely needs to lose some weight ;);)

  • “Specs

    – Articulating screen

    – Metal body, but smaller than 50D

    – Upgraded 15.1mp APS-C Sensor

    – 720p Video at 30fps

    – Electronic Level

    – New battery & battery grip”

If the body is smaller than 50D it must be xxxD or xxxxD, on the other hand it does not quite make sense with the “metal body”, traditionally “Rebel’s” built quality was never all that great. Well, of course it’s just CR1 and badly translated as well :P

I hope that electronic level will now be a standard feature in the Canon lineup.

  • CR guy is actually part of the Yakuza. He was dishonored so they cut the end of his pinky off.

  • If Canon wants to compete against the D90, they’ll reduce the weight and size of the 50D to match the D90. But it’s hard to say.

Glad to hear about the articulating screen…

  • “If Canon wants to compete against the D90, they’ll reduce the weight and size of the 50D to match the D90”

Sand weight are pretty much irrelevant. If anything I would like it to be BIGGER with larger grip.

  • “Yeah, we all saw the same CSI: Miami episode Monday”

So you only know what you see on TV and have never heard of the Yakuza before?

  • Maybe I’m just dense but why on earth would Canon want to scale back the 60D just to compete with a lower spec model like the D90? The 50D is a better camera than the D90, why go backwards?

  • I guess there is quite a market for a higher build quality body which does not reach xxD/7D proportions. While I really like the more “professional” appearance and quality feel of the 7D, I sometimes miss the reduced bulk of the 450D… although I do not miss anything else about the 450Ds of course. ;-)

So a 60D with a slightly reduced body size and weight (but keep the casing metal) would make some sense to me and I think if done properly it would not compromise handling in any way. But of course it would “force” people who want to appear important (i.e. need a big camera) to move to 7D.

  • I hope it’s not a 60D. Another 15 mp sensor would not be an improvement. An improvement would be less megapixels with better higher-ISO pictures. A 60D is supposed to be a prosumer-level camera, not a consumer level camera.

  • i agree with your market prespective

i think it would be 2000D, because it has a smaller body than 50 D, but not with a metal body, or it could be 60D but with 50D siza, it’s still CR1 anyway….

    but what i want most from canon is 12-24 f/4 L !!!!!!

  • This is interesting, as one thing I miss from Canon’s current line is lack of a tilting screen anywhere.

Personally I don’t think this is 60D, especially with the tilting screen, which is more a consumer level feature. I’d guess 550D moving up to take on the D90 level.

  • It has a metal body is only slightly smaller than the 50D. Therefore it is ranked higher than a 500D and a 2000D is not ranked higher than a 500D. It is the 60D.

2000D will be a basic DSLR with a 12mp sensor as was mentioned before on this site. The same news described the 60D with an articulating (very thin) screen. (Until the news got pulled.)

  • I actually like the sound of this (except for the video specs). if its 15mp with the same technology from the 7D sensor, then it would be pretty awsome, and about the smaller sized body -perfect! Even though I find my 450D slightly too small, I also find the other bodies to large, so something in between is just perfect for me personally..! and I kinda hope this is the 60D and not a rebel (though it sounds like a rebel) cause I want AF-microadjust:P

  • So, the Nikon D300 is poorer than the D100? The Canon 5D2 is worse than the 5D? The Canon 30D is worse than the 10D?

  • Just wondering if Canon are not thinking of a restructuring in the “lower-end” of the market with the new camera falling between the 500D and 50D, a possible line-up?

    1000/”2000″D (Between 1000D and 500D),

    New (This CR1) camera,

    7D, etc..

Could this make the room for the introduction of a 4/3 system at some stage?

  • I find 7D too small as well but that’s not the point. The point is that the OP seems to think that “excessive” size of 50D over D90 is a problem. It is not.

  • I totally agree. Size in between 500d and 50d would be perfect. Give it GPS autotagging, and the checklist is complete.

  • If you’ve lost a bit of finger, do ALL the physio they reccomend. Some one i know did not and mostly lost the use of the whole finger through lack of exercising it.

Interesting CR1 – might mean canon is merging the expected 550 & 60D lines into 1 product. As they have now started the xxxxD line this might make sense. Not what i wanted but may be better in the long run.

  • Why does Canon need any market analysts! This board already has a 1000 of them!

(Too bad they don’t listen to us, otherwise the 5D with 7D features would’ve been released in November!)

  • a merging of xxD and xxxD (call it a 9D:P)has been my highest wish for some time now, even though I still think there is room for a 60D between 500D and 7D.. a 50D with 7D sensor reduced to 15MP for improved ISO -performance, stuffed into a body sized somewhere in between the xxxD and xxD’s.. -that would be my ultimate camera..

  • Stuart, I think you are on to something. I think they need to better define an upgrade path from from the rebel or xxxd series. The 7d was introduced as a pro solution. If you are a pro and need aps-c go the 7d route. However, think of all the rebel owners who would no fork out $1600 but would be willing to shovel out $800 to $900 (a few hundred less then the current xxd line). The features need to be more consumer then pro.

So what does this mean for the xxd line, I think it will be altered into a new line. They may still name it the xxd. However, I bet if you looked at the profit margins the rebel lines make a ton more money for Canon then the xd lines.

  • yikes, seen lots of knife-meets-finger injuries since A-school back in the day.

good luck to you in recovering, CR guy

  • That response made no sense: what I meant to say was that Canon is going to have to put forward a response to the micro-4/3 based cameras, if not a micro-4/3 based system of their own.

  • Woooo, that hurts…

Thumb you said… was it the right thumb or the left?
If the right one gets too short… then it would be hard to turn the quick dials or use the joy stick on your 1D camera…. >.<

  • Don’t expect 60D anytime soon.
However expect a camera that is better then 500D…

Also expect xxxxD and XD camera but the latter is unsure now if it will be before Q2.

  • Rifht. And seriously people how hard is it to look at a product lineup before you make up stuff?

  • Eh, they’ll probably come up with an EVIL camera that can use the EF-S mount.

That would make the most sense as long as their engineers can figure it out.

  • I’m hoping the grip doesn’t got the way of the Rebel, like Nikon did in the D70/80/90 line. Or maybe it would just be Canon’s way of forcing me to a 7D if I want a comfortable-feeling camera. If so, well played, Canon …

  • As a T1i owner wishing to upgrade, I’m telling you this camera would be a sure seller. The ONLY reason I bought the T1i over the D90 is because it has better video capabilities (yes, sometime I like to get some video of the kids; shameful.) I have used a 7d as well. I know that preset scene modes are a sign of photographic weakness on this site, but I’m sorry, sometimes I’m in a hurry to get a shot of the kids doing something unexpected and it can be helpful in a pinch. The 60d will likely offer some basic presets.

The D90 is so well featured and such a great size in the hand. Plus the kit lens dominates Canon’s kit lens.

However, since I have invested heavily now in Canon lenses, I am hoping the 60d will be a new home for them.

  • I hope you feel better – Really sorry to hear about your thumb – keep us posted about how things are with it!

  • Hey CR guy,

Hope you’re recovering OK. I assume you made it to hospital so the worst is over. Get lots of rest & be sure to eat healthy. Take care & all the best.

    -Blake

  • I’d love to see a new camera rebel-sized but with a metal body! Articulating screen is ok as long as the resulution is high.

  • Large camera are usually more comfortable to hold, but are more likely to be left behind on casual trips and walks. I find that the difference in size between a rebel and the 50D is just too much – with the rebels being too small to fit well in hand and the 50D being too large to want to bring everywhere. Something inbetween these sizes would be perfect (like the size of the D90). a sure buy for me.

  • You’re right – Assuming you’re the one buying all cameras in the world, it’s not a problem at all.

  • CR Guy, Sorry about the thumb, and best wishes for a happy recovery! But why not post a picture? We’re all imagining the worst case scenario here… ;-)

  • And I want an EF 12-24mm f/2.8 L

Ahhh… and while we’re at it, please gimme an EF 200-500mm f/4 L IS as well.

    L.O.L.

  • Exactly. I have larger than average hands and that’s my one major gripe with the 450D–it’s uncomfortable to hold. I recently bought the battery grip and it’s 100 times more comfortable.

I find it odd because even my old Rebel G has a better grip than the 450D. It looks the same but there’s more bulk on the right side, which makes something of a difference.

So, yeah, if Canon does that I’ll be pushed toward a 7D as well, which I’m really not all that interested in. 5DII maybe.

  • I believe it’s so you can see where certain photos were taken on a map. If you went hiking through the desert and wanted to know where you took the picture of the cool looking purple flower, this is how you’d figure it out.

  • Well at least you can never again say, “I’m all thumbs…” Sorry about your accident. As for the teaser email, I’m waiting for the 5DII upgrade.

  • I have a bad theory that says that since canon has released the 7d, a direct competitor to the d300s, canon will scale down the xxd to fight the d90 head to head. that means a 7d focus system and specs in a much smaller body and a 5FPS shooting speed. what makes it worse is that an 18 mp sensor with a single digic processor would give you around 5fps, wouldn’t it ?

  • Canon will NEVER put 7D’s AF into the xxD series.

That would kill the 7D instantly.

Remember that 7D’s AF is currently better then Nikons AF in the upper class.

  • uhhhhh try it in low light and you will beg to differ. trust me i got to try both the 7D and D300s. I own a D700 and a 1dsII. The Nikon always focuses better in low light.

Different strokes for different folks, the 7D is still a fine camera especially for action and video, but the D300s and 700 still have better overall AF.

  • So it’s useful for the sort of people who’d likely already be carrying a GPS unit of some sort.

This needs to be added to each and every camera why?

  • BS from a Noink fangirl. D300s is waaay noticeably slower than 7D, I’ve also used both. Slow AF CPU on the D300s can’t cope with all 51-pts. active, it speeds up w/ only 11 pts. active. 7D has dedicated AF CPU and is much, much more flexible and configurable. In low-light 7D acquires faster & locks-on noticeably better. Your lenses must be cr*p is my only explanation for your strange experience. That, or you’re a fangirl.

  • It’s fake. Canon would never go down on video quality and up in build quality compared to 500D and in the same camera.

  • Yes, the same one that the OP used – just different conclusion.

I’d love to see a review from a respectable source complaining about the size of 50D compared to D90 – any takers?

  • It’s a matter of personal preference.

I bring my 40D, 17-55 2.8IS, AND Tokina 50-135 2.8 almost everywhere I go, every day. I don’t find that it’s too much to bring. The minimum I ever bring is 40D with canon 17-55 2.8. I wouldn’t leave home without it anymore than my wife would leave home without her purse.

  • BTW… one of the biggest deal-breakers with the rebel series to me is that they don’t have the wheel on back. The xxD series is immensely more useable in the field than a rebel.

  • Hmmm… I don’t know if I’m a respectable source, but I’ve held both and I prefer the size/weight of the D90.

  • Yea I’d be embarrassed to be seen with a Hasselblad H3D. That things giganto and passe. Haha.

If they could make a Rebel sized FF I guess that would be convenient.

  • I still don’t get it… full frame sensors are so superior in low noise, high ISO, huge viewfinder, and truly wide-angle, so why do we still clammer on about these crop sensor cameras and all the hopes we have for them? FF is starting to get cheap enough, who cares about what all the possible new crop models might be? One day I hope the crop-sensor camera goes where it belongs: specialty category for birders and sports journalists.

The purpose of this rant is to get the message to camera makers to start making full-frame the NORM, and affordable, and that’ll happen when the public gets over this desire for crop-sensor models. It’s getting almost as old as people still having allegiance to klunky OLD Windows XP when you have this shining start called Windows 7. Same with full-frame… start saving for it and you’ll never regret it.

Please, if you haven’t shot full-frame, don’t even bother explaining why you like it. You have no idea what you’re missing.

  • You’re joking, right? Nobody can be that ignorant about price and size advantages of cameras with crop sensors.

  • I’m using a 5D regularily at work, but for personal use I actually prefer my 450D by far.. IQ is good enough and I find it much easier to use + size and weight is much more preferable.. I never bother to drag the 5D out of the office, really, all I use it for is studio-work.. The only thing I ever borrow the 5D for is if I need wide angle with f2.8 and thinner dof than what a 10-22 gives, in which case I’ll use 5D + 16-35.. You’ll most likely not understand that this is possible, but just accept that different people have different needs so what suits you might not suit others.. Luckily canon understands this and offer different alternatives that suits different people -they make people happy and gets some more cameras sold -how on earth can that bother you in any way?

  • if you have a seperate GPS, would you bother marking off the position off all the pics you take?? if yes, then go ahead, if no, then either dont use any gps-tagging or wish in-camera gps welcome..

  • I don’t see age as being a limiting factor on release schedules. The 60D may happen at the same time, or be later as the 7D fills the higher upgrade path gap for now.

  • Short answer is no. You need a new lenses and a new mount to make effective use of the space saving from ditching the mirror. An adapter to allow use of EF-S and EF lenses would be logical.

  • There is a big difference between expressing your opinion as to you personal preference compared to making a statement that something is better/worse and it must change to be competitive (as the OP has stated).

  • As far as rants go this was a pretty good one, it has everything that a good rant needs – strong opinions, authoritative voice, disregard for facts and reality. I give it 8/10 on the rant scale.

  • You’re both missing the point: having GPS support means additional cost while adding a feature with virtually zero benefit.

I say just virtually zero rather than zero because, as mentioned, there are probably people who wander around and, for whatever reason, need to know the exact GPS for a given photo.

  • He couldn’t even get a decent “rumor” how could he be an Eagle Scout.. Not a Scout even.. LOL

  • Here is another person hoping for the 60D. I have larger hands and find the XXD series more comfortable to hold than the Rebels. Canon needs a camera in between the 7D and Rebel, without one there is just too much of a gap.

  • What the… Those crazy… Sounds like Canon marketing below our threshold of satisfaction. Come on! Give us that new monster CMOS (square shaped, 32mp, 8 micron wide pic wells). Throw in a couple Digit 5’s (sorry to hear about the thumb) and we’re looking at an IQ very similar to medium format (at a third of the price).

  • It is obviously a subjective aspect of camera design. Currently Canon offers nothing between the size of the rebels and the XXD/7D. Nikon does.

  • You are quite correct but that’s not addressing the point that I have raised – I highly doubt that size and weight are often (if ever) decisive factors when choosing a DSLR.

  • If I’m not mistaken, Canon were at some point in the past manufacturing several lenses in the Leica M mount. Could be a good move to introduce a digital rangefinder (something like the Leica M9) to compete with this m4/3 trend. It could use their own lenses (plus they could start a new lens line, of course) and it would probably persuade a few Leica M glass owners to consider Canon as an option.. given current Leica pricing, they would get a Canon body for much cheaper, while still being able to use their excellent Leica lenses.

  • a smaller than xxd with 7d specs will be in my shopping list. It will be great for travel. :)

  • of course not the exact 7d specs. I’m expecting them to reduce the speed and make the overall performance slower.

  • Hmm, Do you still have your thumb??
I worry about the future ratings of camera’s, rumours and other stuff. How will you do the ‘Thumb uP’ and ‘Thumb Down’.
    I wish you quick recovery.

  • the only reasonable argument against it is the added cost.. if it doesnt cost too much extra, then why not? of course, GPS is not exactly what I look for when I buy camera but if its there and doesnt cost too much then I wouldnt have a problem paying for it.. maybe you wouldnt, but if enough others would, then… thats your problem..

  • Well, Canon guy has an advantage over the thumbs up thing. He now can say fully convinced: The new xD…or whatever…wins HANDS DOWN ;) Get well soon, man. I gotta leave home to get a surgery within the next two hours

  • Sorry to hear about your accident cr man, best wishes to you.

Concerning the camera post, I can honestly say this is the first time I’ve seen a rumour here [re DSLRS] and thought “yes please, I’d like to buy one of those.”

It was the speed and quietness of ring USMs along with the relatively quiet eos 100 that first brought me to Canon in the early 90s, and I purchased my first DSLR in June 2005 [eos 350D] with a view to upgrading in a few years. Although I also now have a 5Dmk2, the upgrading of the 350D has never happened yet – the 40D was close, but rather bulky and rather blitzed by its proximity to the Nikon D300; I’ve thought about the 450D & 500D, and perhaps would have eventually succumbed to the 550D, but the thought of a smallish eos with better build quality is actually quite exciting – hope it turns out to be real!

  • I can see a clear and big market for a camera for portrait photographers, working in difficult and extreme weak-light conditions (as in clubs) as well as in many other places, and who love ambient light.

I see it as: FF, 9-12 MP, ISO 1600-12800 of portrait quality, and 25600 not far from it (as in Nikon D3s), fast 6-9 fps, it should also be very light-weight (like 500D ideally). 500D plastic and weight is absolutely ok, maybe a bit of rain-protection would be nice. Pro AF is NOT needed, but it should be quick and sensitive at centre point. Money is an issue (want to pay only for what I need).

This would satisfy all club photographers and a great deal of wedding photoghraphers and other portrait photographers.

Nikon D700s would sit right in thi area.

Is this market so small, that there’s no single perfect camera from Canon for this market?

  • only 1 month out there and the first firmware up date

strange mmmmmmmmmmmm every body love the new AF this is very strage because the noise is the problem not the af ( i belive Is selling Cats for Rabbit )

FAQ: Announcement regarding AF tracking performance of the EOS-1D Mk IV

As a result of further enhancement, Canon is working to release a firmware update for the EOS-1D Mark IV. This firmware update further enhances the AF tracking performance and is scheduled to be available for download from the Web starting from late January.

We will update this announcement on once this firmware update is ready for download.

    Answer:

    Details of the enhancement:

Firmware Version 1.0.6 enhances the AF tracking performance of the EOS-1D Mark IV for receding subjects and for subjects that are approaching at a low speed.

    Support:

Once the new firmware is ready for download, this announcement will be updated.

For additional questions you can contact us using e-mail support or alternatively telephone support.

  • Exactly.

Sometimes, maybe years later, I forget where a picture was taken, and I wish I could remember. GPS would solve that.

  • uhhhhh are you being serious? what’s wrong with the D700 (5-8fps) or a used D3 (9fps). You can find a solid used D3 for around 2.8-3k right now.

It will be a long while before there is a “CHEAP” FF

  • yawn… wake me up when we get an FF 7D with an optimized 16-21mpx sensor… oh and some cheaper/light IS super teles in the 500-600 range… yea, that’ll get me excited… how Canon is going to squeeze another 1.6x camera in an already overcrowded sector is just not interesting… maybe a bit comical at times but that is about it :P

  • If anything Canon should move the Rebel series upmarket (add nifty little things like the top LCD) instead of moving the 60D down market.

  • You can keep on sleeping then. :) It may take another decade for your wish to come.

I hope the new grip will have the AF-On button and a joystick to boot. I use the joystick to quickly select AF points.

  • ahhhhh

So 50 years from now when I am revered like Ansel people can try to reproduce my purple flower picture.

  • I do miss those big trunks though, how else is one supposed to move a beef carcass when they really need to?

  • I’m not so sure if it’s all about the size that makes the Rebels don’t fit so well in one’s hand (although there has been an enhancement from the 350D up to the 500D). There are some p&s cameras fittig very well in my hand and beeing even smaller than my 400D.

  • I think that a smaller format of DSLR will be interesting, like the sensor to be PSG G10 size or bigger(whatever Canon see fits), can use EF and EFS lenses will be great, so we can have super long tele. For me G10 performance is well more than great, as technology evolves, it will get better.

  • They did it with G11.
It means that P&S developers have started thinking :) So maybe xxD development group will take their type of thinking =)) I hope so.

  • Yeah, serious.
    D700/D3/D3s are absolutely perfect cameras.
I’m surprised by the fact that Canon does not see this market.
I own some Canon gear, got used to its ergonomics and design and would love to see a D700s killer with 10-12mp sensor. But this is not gonna happen.

  • Yep. But the G11’s sensor is far more smaller than APS-C. They raised pixelcount on an APS-C sensor to 18.1MP with the 7D. And as far as I read about it, most people are realy happy with the high-ISO performance of the 7D. However, I would appreciate 10MP on APS-C as sRAW 10MP from a 18 MP sensor is larger than RAW from a 10MP sensor and so far I never came to a point were my 10MP weren’t enough.

  • Had a good accident with a kitchen knife and my thumb. Let’s just say I miss what’s gone.

    Can’t you read?!

  • who cares if somebody is a fan of something? if they call you a canon fanboy, then who is right? and if they’re such a uncorrigible nikon fanatic, then why did they own a 1dsII?

i’ve never seen people so uncivil on the internet outside of politics or religion. apparently cameras are both!

  • When I think “articulating screen”, I immediately picture Ashton Kutcher and his Nikon commercials. Ick.

  • They could sneak it in so long as they put a tired 1.6x to bed for good. Put the XS, XSi, and 50D to rest. Make the 60D compete more directly with the Nikon D90 (in size and form) but give it an improved 15 mpx sensor and some of the AF of the 7D. Slap on a $1199 msrp and call it a day. I’d buy it for my backup.

  • Not for me. Dynamic range, low ISO performance, etc are all things were a 350D (e.g.) is much better than a G11. There hasn’t been THAT much advances in sensor technology that a G11 seized sensor would have a chances to compete with APS-C. Not to mention depth of field etc…
