Nikon has created a new Instagram account for its Z mount cinema gear called ‘zcinema' and immediately showed off an upcoming lineup of lenses that certainly are cinema in appearance, with what appears to be focus and iris (aperture) gearing.

Nikon's Aihara Takashi talked to DCW about this, and Nikon seems to be going all in on cinema. Not a great surprise since they forked out money to purchase RED after all.

This is going to be big news for you!” Nikon exec Aihara Takashi told us. “Nikon is now developing Nikkor Cinema Lenses. They are under development right now, so it's going to take some time until they launch. We have done extensive research with Red to understand the needs in the cinema industry. But we have already begun development. So, yeah, look forward to it!

What could we see from Nikon?

No details are known at this time on the lenses shown in the silhouettes, but all the lenses seem to be around the same size (at least the lenses shown), so I'd assume it's similar to Canon's VCM lineup but with the external gearing that Canon's VCM lenses do not have.

Their S series primes really don't give much away, since what we see on the images are lenses of a similar size. The S series lenses don't seem to be that similar, so it really feels like Nikon may be reaching back and slowly developing an entirely new lineup of lenses.

Now this is nothing out of the ordinary for Nikon; they used to design, develop, and release lenses at a faster cadence than Canon. So Nikon certainly has the talent and the know-how to do this, especially when combined with RED's cinema expertise.

More competition in this space is good news, and Canon always does better when pushed by its traditional most significant rival.

  1. I can't wait for some Youtuber to make a price comparison: Zr + one lens (or maybe two) for the same price as C50
That would pump up the fans.
I admit, they are good in marketing. They anticipate that someone from other brand might be tempted to get a Zr so they are offering lenses to make it easier.

I expect these lenses to be high end at mid end prices, around 5,000~6,000 US$ a piece, T1.5, very fast and silent AF capabilities using their new AF motors, top class image quality. They will want to appeal to photographers also hence the AF capability even if they come in more cine like packaging. My guess is that optically this is basically a full line up derived from the technologies used in the Noct/Plena lenses. Sort of SX lenses above the S line.
