From Canon Australia
The event on the 20th of October in Australia is to commemorate the 50th anniversary of Canon SLR's. I can't think of a better way to ring in year 51 than with a new camera.
History Lesson
In case you were wondering what the first Canon SLR looked like, take a peak at my Canonflex.

Hmmm … wonder why I didn’t get an invite :P Seriously though, is that the Mk IV in silhouette??
I’d LOVE to go to that event! It’s five minutes from my work too.. So close, yet so far! :( Have a great time to anyone lucky enough to attend.
Boner! C===8
Is that a M-Fn button right next to the shutter button ???
Aah. Never mind. This button is only new on the 7D ;)
I think the same !
Kobayashi? Canon Australia is run by Keyser Söze?
Well it would explain a lot.
It has to be either a picture of a 1D3 or a 1D4, right? Someone shop up a 1D3 image to compare!
Look very closely at the hot shoe. It seems to have an extra slope to it, probably for better weatherproofing. Otherwise it looks just like a 1D3.
I did some image searching, and it looks identical to the 1DsIII, not the 1DIII. The top around the hotshoe is the giveaway. The buttons look identical.
well, soze’s lawyer.
Nevermind, I forgot to look at the 1Ds3
Hey, CR guy, how about new lenses on October 20? I was thinking of picking up a 100-400L at Adorama this weekend. Any news on that front?
i’ve looked on in “envy” at the nikon 200-400 f/4
oh my would that be good for event type sports, though would probably cost a fortune
The prism housing is the same size as 1DsIII so its full frame.
If this is a silhouette of the new 1DIV maybe it is full frame?
Maybe both a 1DIV and 1DsIV on Oct 20?
Then again it could be nothing.
Prism has nothing common with the crop factor, the important thing is coverage and magnification. 1.3 crop with 1x magnification can be veeeery large prism…
I’ve did some photoshopping and I really think it’s the new 1D. There’s fairly clearly a ‘1’ to be seen.
Check it out over here http://twitpic.com/lh4tp
it probably is a 1D but not because of this, the 1Ds has the same EOS-1 text right there.
Yes, you’re right, but the 1D will probably be the first to be released. Maybe both.
Yes, when is Canon going to release something similar. It is highly missing in their lens line up. Canon… we are waiting for you.
Looking at the photoshopped picture I read ‘EYE 1’.
That’s because the pixels got a bit distorted by bringing up the levels. It’s noticeable in the rest of the photo (mainly in the corners) too.
But anyway, the ‘1’ part is the most important because it will probably be ‘EOS’ anyway ;)
I hope for EOD 3D!!
… and a dream come true ;)
I think, we see at the picture a high end dslr: the pop up flash is missing!
I would also like to attend a meeting with Mr Kobayashi. That’s one of the coolest names ever.
They should have taken this picture with the new Nikon at ISO 1000000 or whatever it is so we could see all those details hiding in the shadows…
the body COULD be a smaller 5d sized body u know! :) heheh here is wishful thinking… small EOS 3D body, 7d features, 5dmark2 full frame sensor… sigh
Nikon just release D3s, which I cannot see much different or help for Pro action shots~ Hope 1D MK 4 can do better~ Maybe Nikon just testing the market or Canon…
The D3s is incredibly Meh for a 5k camrea
The prism and hot shoe shape is different than the Mark III. The Mark III’s prism rises higher with steeper sides. This one looks lower in profile with a higher sitting hot shoe.
I see below that others say it looks like a 1DsIII. I only have a 1DIII here sitting in front of me to compare… and it looks different than the 1DIII.
Yes I think that is a M-Fn button
So help me, my head will explode if all they do is announce a new Australian golf tournament.
A couple of things. Could this be a 1Ds4 Camera? Which will be the successor to both the 1D4 and 1Ds4. It will be full frame and have 1.3 crop. Probably not.
A straight 1DIII sequel (1D4) with APS-H and a trillion fps?
A 3D that would be a full frame with the advancements of the 7D and a full frame sensor?
Probably the second, but it does look more like a 1Ds than a 1D.
Also that lens looks huge. It’s probably a 85 1.2II, but maybe something new?
Regardless of crop, it’ll be a dope rig. The best thing Canon could do is make it full-frame with a 1.3 crop mode. That way it touched more markets. The prism in this photo **appears** identical to the 1Ds. Let’s hope I’m right. Regardless, I’m so used to the 1.3 crop, it doesn’t sway me into dumping a new $20K worth of Nikon gear and learn a new system, just for the sake of a crop factor. Let’s just wait and see folks…
~dave
+1 I buy that in a flash
Look just like a 1DsIII on top. So either it is only supposed to be a 1DsIII or the next Eos1 is a full frame just like the current 1Ds. Why would they do their silly paint over if it is just a 1DsIII? Could we be getting a new full frame?
:)
p.s. I did the photo overlay of the image shown/1DsIII/1DIII and the 1DsIII is a perfect match. (the 1DIII matches all but the prism)
+2
I agree but when Canon drops the 1D4 the D3s will go down in price. Just like when Canon introduced the 7D, the nikon D300s dropped in price.
LOL!
Nikon is doing their usual treading water routine between big releases — but yeah the D3s is spectacularly boring. new jello video? same 12 MP? relatively pedestrian 9 FPS? crazy ISO — I’ll wait to see how useful that appears. unless you’re an embed in afghanistan I don’t know that a blotchy 102,400 shot gains you much — but who knows.
looks like the Canon camp got all in a tizzy for no reason. any of the projected spec lists for the upcoming 1DMkIV would easily make it the preferred shooter for sports/PJ photography.
won’t go down by enough to make it more appealing than the 1DMkIV. prices on a brand new Nikon are unlikely to drop that much because they still need to cover their costs and simply because the camera is still a high quality camera.
note that old Canon 1DMkII’s still trade higher than new 50D’s, despite the relatively wimpy sensor and weaker gimme-gimme’s like a high res LCD.
Nikon just doesn’t have the bankroll to do the same level of development that Canon does for each and every iteration; they do a good job when they come up with new product, but they just can’t deliver new product as often.
Smaller then a 5D? *Urg*
I like to hold a massiv camera in my hand!
All what I need is a FF, minimum 5 pic per second and a usable low an high iso. That’s all!
Oh come on you guys,
the M.-Fn button is clearely visible on the left side of the camera near the dial. It even has its own shadow ..
1d mark4 … yay
Only in case when Canon provides a competitor. This far there are competitors in the fast pro FF niche for Nikon.
sorry, read: “no competitors” instead of “competitors”
+1
thats indeed the new EOS-1, you can not miss that M-Fn button!!!!
and this is the perfect time for it to be announced.
Check the 1D3, it has the same button.
ups … when did that happen ? :|
sick idea about the full frame with a custom function 1.3x crop mode.
Quick Photoshop job matching the Canon logo…

nikon’s being doing it forever. this is a straightforward thing that Canon needs to suck it up and fix. the stupid thing this whole time was that — it hasn’t even really been a hardware thing. 5D proved FF isn’t that much more pricey than APS-H to develop and produce. it’s just been a programming thing. time to do it, Canon
That button is likely the FEL button, which exists on all 1D models.
Unless for the newest iteration, they’ve changed it to M.Fn
The 1D Mark I has this button, it’s called the FEL button.
Geez they look to be the same. The rubber covers on the right seem to be the same shape and size especially in the grooves. We may still have to wait till 2010 for a Mark IV
The hot shoe area definitely looks different.
The prism housing looks to be the same size as 1DsIII. Hopefully 1DIV is full frame with a 1.3 and 1.6 crop mode. Then everyone would be happy.
It couldn’t be all for nothing, otherwise they would have just shown a picture of the actual 1Ds Mark III and calle it a day. The fact they are having an event and going through the trouble of creating a poster with a silhouette of a Canon 1D is a definite sign that they are announcing their much anticipated Mark IV. The only question is whether it’ll be one camera (1D) or two, 1D and 1Ds.
Hello,
I am sure this is the image they are using.

Any thoughts on the ion. part of the invitation. Reflex—ion..
i think that they are useing the same silloutte they always use
ok it wont show my picture so go here

Okay, who wants to help me achieve my dream of owning the Mk IV by purchasing my MK III?
If this is truly going to be 1D mark IV, and at this point, it looks almost certain it is, with dual Digic V processors and all, at what price wil it be offered? As of late, Canon has been doing an admirable job with their initial body prices, no one can complain at the 5D Mark II offered at $500 below the original 5D or the Nikon D700, the same can be said about the 7D offered at $100 below the D300S given all the tech advantages the 7D has over Nikon’s fairly yesterday-technology in the 300S. By that token, maybe the 1D mark IV will land at $ 3700, and that will be sweet, but more likely 4K, I guess
4000$ would still be a killer price
At $4,000 I would sell my new 7D and 24mm 1.4L to make money for purchasing it. Although image quality would need to best the 5D Mark II, as well as ISO performance.
what ever canon is releasing it will definitely beat the D3s hands down. apart of the 102400 ISO setting (which I think will be useless) there is nothing new about the new D3 body.
I agree, 7D has larger prism to give the user a larger viewfinder.
it’s the same size as the 50 1.2L,
So it either a 50 1.2L, 1.2LII, or 1.0LII
they blackened the lens for some reason,
1.0 is my guess.
Shure, will $10 do?
:-p
It might not, they might be different products with different sensor sizes.
Unless you count video.
Why http://www.canonrumours.com is not working?
Only http://www.canonrumors.com is working
Ahn! Now it’s working!
I don’t think it’s incredibly likely for them to release a 3d, just because they already have 2 camera’s that aren’t 1 series in the xD range and a third, especially so close to the release of the 7d seems a bit overkill in a very small part of the market.
I’d say that a silhouette like that indicates a new camera as it has in the past, but I don’t see the 1D and 1Ds merging just yet, so I’m gonna expect a 1D mk IV (and secretly hope for a FF 3D at a price point above the 5d with 7d AF and other features excluding fps but with a similar responsive feel)
“apart of the 102400 ISO setting (which I think will be useless) there is nothing new about the new D3 body.”
I think another great improvement on D3s body is the ability to use DX lenses with a crop factor that permits taking pictures at 10mpix resolution.
Weren’t they always able to do that? I thought that now they just supported software crop factors??
I would take it as long as the Mark 4 cost $10. :)
If you mount a DX lens on an FX body, the resolution will be more than half. :) So a 12Mp D3s will be 5.1mp with a DX lens.
How about 35 F 1.4 II?
regardless of the sensor size, the 1d and d3 are serious products for top of the line professionals. That make them go head to head. there can only be one winner here.
even in video the D3s doesn’t match the current canon implementation. the D3 lacks the full manual control. Beside, the 1d mark IV will have the video features of the 5d with a new processor that is designed for video which will give it the edge in that area.
you are right. there is no 3d.
as fireica said, the dx mode will reduce the image size to 5.1 MP. so its basically like doing a software crop. beside, this is already there in the original D3.
im a buyer :p
The dangers of using Google Adsense: this article is currently displaying a Google ad for “supremecamera.com”, which Google in turn shows to be a ripoff operation. If there’s a way to turn off certain ads served by Google, this would be a good one to block.
My prediction
the 1d4 will be the bees knees.
You heard it here first! :P
… 5 days before supposed announcement. Bring on the brochure leaks!!
Show them to me! The specs off course!
Just an FYI: I had a 1D3 on order, which was being sourced directly from Canon through my local supplier. This camera was scheduled to arrive today, but my supplier has been informed that the product is now discontinued.
He also said that the 1D4 will be announced tomorrow, and that he would have availability and pricing by then.
Lets hope you’re right J. About freaking time if you ask me :)
I hope so too.. I’ll post again tomorrow when I hear back from the retailer.
This is certainly interesting. Keep us posted!
well, Nikon’s target market is photo journalists and they don’t need 1080p
Nikon never claimed it as a revolutionary product. It is a marginal update.
“Nikon’s fairly yesterday-technology in the 300S”….
if that is yesterdays technology, what do we call 7D’s flash master, meter linked af, horizontal/vertical levels, different af options, on demand gridlines etc…
probably yesteryear…or simply ‘stolen from Nikon’
so why add 720p?
if the Mark 4 cost $10 then you wouldn’t need help to achieve your dream
if its sub 4k i a highschool student will get a job a buy one for that price but it has to be 10fps 16mp fullframe with killer video and little to no jello effect and some sort of af
it will be aps-h though and crush my dreams
It’s possible, there are lot’s of lenses due to be upgraded
like the 24 mk2

If there were an announcement tomorrow (Friday) there would already have been a press conference scheduled.
It seems far more likely the announcement will take place on Oct 20.
As for the photo in the invitation, it seems most likely that the picture is just a Canon stock photo. I don’t think they’d use an image of their new camera.
Remember that event that was advertised with the box draped in the red cloth? So many people were trying to analyze that image, and it turned out to mean nothing…except red cloth over a box, to symbolize an unveiling of a product. Nothing more…nothing less.
It’s the same way with this image…it’s just meant to symbolize a generic Canon camera.
But the new 1.2 crop factor seems different and I assume it applies to FF lenses on the new D3s. Very cool feature, essentially keeping happy both FF and small “in-camera crop” fans. No need to debate or own two cameras – just use the crop factor you need for the particular task.
I wonder about, how to put it, a rather modest campaign from Canon, when 20th is the day indeed for the announcment. Have they been sitting almost for three years for doing nothing which would require fanfares? Or is it just much less money for PR this year because of economics?
Hey, who needs a new camera? Canon just released a new print app for the Apple iPhone and iPod Touch (true)!
yeah, i’ve seen that one too. finally i have my wifi direct print button, now i can print through walls! baaam!
Nikon decided that 720p is good for pj
I hope its a DP button!! ^^!
No body say it did. But looking at their current top of the line and what canon is capable of, I can clearly see that canon is going to regain the lead with their new release.
Yes, they made it basically to rival the 1.3 crop from canon. However, you will still be losing pixels and in the end you will have less pixels even than the current 1d mark III.
I’m not saying that what Nikon is offering is bad or not good. In fact it is clearly the current best of the line for professionals (in term of body at least). But it is not enough to keep them in the lead.
I’m better than you. I print through 3g network. :p
1d IV specs.
18.1 MP 1.3 Cropped sensor.
12 FPS (with H,L,normal modes)
1080p/720p video with full manual control.
DIGIC 5 (or two of them).
All new AF System based on the current system in the 7d but with many extra points and features.
New battery that almost give twice the juice.
Dual CF cards
dedicated video/live view button.
These are my predictions. Remember when you see the official specs, you read it from me first. :P
lol wifi is way faster than the 3g network ;p
get the job anyways
Looks reasonable. Personally I hope they keep the pixel density lower, say ~15MP.
I’ll be happy with 12mp
Nikon D3s :D
If it costs 10 dollars the lines would not end…
If they can make 18 mp look just as good why is everyone wanting the pixel density to be lower?
Because they can’t.
if you are right i will be really disapoint.
it’s really like a 7D with a better body ! and some more FPS !
on a photo side you better to go with the Nikon D3s ! and if video is your main activity go with the 7D or 5D, 1.3 crop is useless.
F
Whatever. Statements like “1.3 crop is useless” are so blatantly ridiculous they almost don’t warrant a response.
Canon must have really gotten this baby under a lock and key. We are only 3 days away from the great revealing and so far not a single meaningful leak to speak of, not even a google-translated gobbledygook from a Chinese form we’ve gotten accustomed to by now. If it weren’t for their own invitation, we wouldn’t even have known what’s coming!!! Contrast that to the7D or even D300S, hats off to corporate security
what else would you expect from a cropped sensor? this is by far being something revolutionary, even Canon admitted that it was the best compromise at the time, and now we have a bunch of birders and sporters who are against anything bigger and they seem to make up enough of crowd which justifies again opting for a cropped sensor. I wouldn’t be half of that sad if Canon’s image quality wasn’t that good, apparently the switching is not that easy, counting in also the lens collection and habits. Anyway, I passed 1D3, seems to be the same for 1D4 in that case.
Okay, I heard back. Unfortunately I can’t say much other than that the announcement day is Tuesday the 20th (as expected).
then why did u reply
And you know this because?
Technology advances. If they can get more out of each pixel or different ways of interpreting what they can get out of each pixel there is nothing to say a smaller one can not out do a bigger one.
This is a hilarious response.
Now the cropped sensor is the blame for no leaks coming out.
Because i dunno? Canon WANTS less attention to their new camera that they spent millions on R&D from and will be their sports shooter for the next few years. Is that what you are trying to say?
You guys are getting ridiculous. Get off your high Full Frame horses and take some pictures and Print some pictures for once.
I really don’t understand at all. How many of you even have real wide angle lenses. It would be awesome if all you actually went over to nikon so people wouldn’t have to sort through miles of unsubstantiated criticism to see if there are any good leaks in the comments.
No, it wasn’t about the leaks. Friday’s frustration :-)
LOL :)
Watched this movie again few weeks ago :)
ha i intend to but i would much more proactive in getting hired
what else do you expect from a free forum?
Right, just like the 7D has improved noise performance. Right?
lulz
He said almost
12-15mp is ideal for mk4 in order to win on low lite and I’ll say it again ppl stop crying over full-frame. For God’s sake buy a 5dmk2, 1Ds or just make the switch to Nikon.
Do you know even how to judge noise performance? also what other 18 mp canon camera are you judging it against?
lulz
Maybe the same camera they didn’t launch Septemer 29th?
http://www.canonrumors.com/2009/09/announcement-teaser/
The 20th is very close…at this point I’d start to expect some leaks regarding any new camera release on that date.
Now some rumors have pointed to a new camera announcement on the 20th but not actually making the product available until early next year. In essence, this would be Canon moving up the announcement, presumably to take some thunder away from Nikon’s new D3s release.
I’d love to see a 50 1.2II L. I’d be first in line to buy it.
sounds reasonable
Nikon D3s is boring….yawnnnn….
corporate security? may be true for end users but both company would have insiders giving them the specs and upcoming products.
well, with canon, marketing dept plays a very huge role in product specs. either they could’ve stayed with same sensor and improved the ISO or increase MPs and compromise high ISO quality. they chose the second option for better product segmentation and to avoid 5d MKII users getting furious about a crop camera having better specs and better low ISO.
After all, canon decided that 7d must not have more than 3 AEB and af point linked spot meterering, as they are supposed to be PRO features and should be only in 1d series
The 7D has the lowest read noise of ANY crop sensor amera yet made.
Including the D300/D300s.
Thus its fair to say that they can achieve the same with 1.3 crop.
15Mp or so 1d4 will likely have noise performance on a par with the 12Mp D3s, but with higher framerates, better video implimentation and likely a lower pricepoint.
totally useleess and ridiculus.
no other company use this format ! in Nikon all sport shooter are happy with their full frame.
there is no lens designed for this crop factor ! on my full frame my 16-35 and 24-70 are really good focal range. but my 24-70 is not very helpfull on my 1D2 i’m always not enough wide !
personnally i would prefer a full frame of 15mp or 18mp and just crop in post after !
My guess is that this same camera was about to be announced on September 29th (remember that spectacular product in the big red box that never materialized). It was pushed back to see what Nikon had in the D3s and take the wind out of their sails with a killer 1D mark IV.
The lack of any good leaks on the new camera at this point in time has me thinking that the Oct 20 event will not be so eventful, at least not in the way of a new camera introduction.
A marketing perspective…
50 years is pretty big deal.
From a marketing stand point I would not expect Canon to pass up this opportunity to realease some pretty significant gear.
The Canon people have been sworn to secrecy…but even then there has been some low level mumbling of a new camera and a few new high-end lenses.
Don’t be surprised by a new video camera either.
This party is designed to really knock some shoes off…..
I think that is new canon rangefinder camera.. Buahaa!! :)
It’s already October 20th in Australia and there is no word yet. They really know how to keep a secret
Many people have alos become fans of Paul Smith Shoes since they came into the market. I also one of them , I very like Paul Smith Wallets and <a Paul Smith Belts,It designs very good.
