Over the course of the year, the biggest trend has been that consistently every month, compact or built-in lens camera sales have been much higher than last year. CIPA has just released its October CIPA 2025 results, which show against the past reporting period of October, shipments of built-in lens cameras jumped to 60% growth for the month of October, showing the strongest signs that, yes, built-in lens cameras are back.

Traditional manufacturers seem to be slowly recognizing that built-in lens cameras are a market worth exploiting, so let's hope we see more compact cameras, especially from Canon. Everyone knows I've whined about this a lot, but it's a market that the manufacturers just don't seem to be that interested in aggressively pursuing anymore.

Overall for the year, the growth in shipments of built-in lens cameras outpaced that of ILC (interchangeable lens cameras) significantly. The built-in lens shipments have so far increased by 26% while the interchangeable lens camera shipments have increased by only 6%.

The shipment value increases are even more stark, identifying that the camera manufacturers are not only increasing their shipments, but shipping more expensive cameras. Shipment values of built-in lens cameras have increased by 49% while interchangeable lens camera values have only increased by 1%. This tends to indicate that the product mix for interchangeable lens cameras is getting less expensive, while the product mix for compact cameras is increasing in value.

The month-on-month growth in October seems to also be a global phenomenon, with all regions reporting significant increases in shipments, led by China and European Regions.

The Chinese market still continues to be a hot driver in camera shipments, but we'll have to keep an eye out if this changes with the increase in political tensions between Japan and China. I would imagine the Japanese camera manufacturers are praying for calm, as China remains the #1 region for camera shipments, accounting for over 25% of all cameras shipped globally, and is by far the largest region for mirrorless cameras, accounting for 32% of all mirrorless cameras shipped.

Closing Thoughts

The camera market is having a revival this year, and we hope it continues as greater demand for cameras will spur further advancements as camera companies look to tap into those entering the market.

I think there's huge potential for the camera companies, because there's a wide swath of smartphone users that are reaching the limits of capabilities in smartphone sensors, and are looking for something better.

You can view the statistics for the year on CIPA's website.

  1. I suspect the driver is that P&S cameras are trending with Gen Z.
    You seem to be correct.

There was something maybe two years or more ago that it was becoming cool in Japan for buying the earlier p&s because the noise offered a analig like quality that separates the look from contemporary devices. I think at least the Fuji or maybe it was another manufacturer won't allow chimping.

Anyway, mores specifically I (sorry wasnt clear) was referring to the CIPA results mentioning the price increases:

I neglected to consider Trump's Tarrifs have influenced price increase as well...
  2. I hope there coming more compact camera's with a good sensor and raw and evf and zoom around 300/400 that would be awesome travel buddy's.
Still hoping that camera companies will make more compact camera's next year
