Current rumours have Panasonic releasing a new version of its popular Lumix S1R. It's expected to have the same sensor as the Leica SL3 and its core technology. With the Lumix S1R discontinued, this sounds like a no brainer. Very little other details are known at this time. There is also expected to be a lens announced at the same time but no information yet on that.

The Leica SL3 specifications for a point of reference are;

  • 60MP Full-Frame BSI CMOS Sensor
  • Maestro IV Image Processor, 8GB Buffer
  • Hybrid AF System with PDAF & Contrast AF
  • 5.76m-Dot 0.78x-Mag. EyeRes OLED EVF
  • 3.2″ 2.3m-Dot Tilting Touchscreen LCD
  • 8K, C8K, 4K, C4K & FHD 10-Bit Recording
  • ProRes 1080p & Apple MFi Support
  • ISO 50-100000, Up to 15 fps Shooting
  • 5-Axis Sensor-Shift Image Stabilization
  • CFexpress Type B & SD UHS-II Card Slots

So, if nothing else, we can expect that the S1R Mark II will have a decent resolution bump up to 60MP from its current 47MP. I hope this puts a little pressure on Canon to do a high MP R5s soon.

We'll hear more for sure as Japan's CP+ gets closer as it's held in the last week of February.
