  • Don’t know if i’d called this a proper bug, but it’s super annoying. You can choose a 2sec timer in the manual modes (Program and “above” on the dial). But if you switch around through Auto, the Drive Mode defaults back to Self-timer/Remote control. When you switch back to the manual mode you were using, the Drive Mode does not go back to 2sec timer. However, it does “resume” properly if you were using Continuous Drive Mode and do the same dial switch from manual to Auto and back.

This was driving me crazy recently when shooting products in Av with 2sec timer, then switching to Movie mode, then back to Av.

  • And when will a new firmware arrive for the Canon EOS 7D. A firmware update that gives us the same features as released with the new firmware off the Canon EOS 5D.

  • excellent the macro fix

now we just need a tiny air-conditioner to keep the camera from overheating

  • This is because it doesn’t have flash. EOS cameras DO have flash y’know. And everyone knows flash is very power consuming.

  • Your iphone will also NOT give you the same quality, dynamic range etc.

My Berry wouldn’t overheat either ;)
And the Canon’s as far as I am aware don’t actively overheat either – but they could in theory.

But then its 1080p footage that is being recorded – rather different to your iphone wouldn’t you say?

  • Air conditioner? – That things needs way too much energy.

A fan would work – but the problem is that that’s a moving part, and people wouldn’t like the noise it made ;)

The problem I see here is that if they ever put any form of active cooling into the camera it would be used all the time, i.e. processing images too – and a spinning fan that get’s moved about in a camera – it sounds like a good way to wreck the bearings… (gyroscopic effect on the fan)

  • What about putting in something like a 180 shutter, with a fan blade. Then as it spins around it would act like a fan and keep the sensor cool? No added noise as its part of the camera or could be encapsuled in a soundproof part with perhaps a cooler type around the chamber to whip away heat (kind of like on top of PC CPU?

  • The iPhone 4 DOES have a flash, y’know. Ok, well, it’s an LED light, but hey…

  • With a similar motion to a windscreen wiper?

Cunning plan, with maybe a few flaws:

    1) Where would the heat be vented to, no point in simply stirring the hot air around.

    2) Graduated filter effect with the image on the outer edge of the sweep being over exposed and the inner edge under exposed?

    3) More flaws.

    Solutions to flaws:

    1) Have a hole in the camera case for venting the hot air. (Needs to a different one to the one letting the light in).

In addtion to the heat it could let out all but the largest lumps of dirt wiped off the sensor by the windscreen wiper shutter.

    2) Have a reducing number of pixels on the sensor as you move away from the centre of the sweeping shutter.

An additional benefit is that this would appeal to those that want more/or less pixel density on their sensors. They can just use a different part of the sensor according to their preferance!

    3) More solutions.

No, I’m not drunk or stupid. Worse than that, I’m bored!

Maybe if my boss moves away I can expand on flaw/solutions number 3.

    ;-)

Guess you don’t care about weather sealing…at all

  • Does anyone know how to add languages to the Japanese model of the T2i (Kiss 4)?

I bought one of these for my mother-in-law unwittingly thinking they were all the same………..and she only speaks Portuguese.

I know, don’t buy anything expensive or complicated for a mother-in-law. Lesson learned.

    Help!

  • The manual adjustment of soundlevels. Very important for my kind of filming. The Live Histogram. Also important in bad light conditions. I do band and concert photography. Both features are essential for me.

  • You can expect a Firmware Update to fix the “iris jitter” issue as we mention at:

    http://5dmark2.wordpress.com/2010/07/07/firmware-update-1-0-8/

Not so sure if Canon is willing to add more features to the 7D. Keep in mind that it already has movie modes that were strongly requested by 5D2 users, but Canon didn’t release it to public due strong aliasing (720p50/60). 7D also offers better HDMI output than 5D2 whilst recording (not when playing back or before starting recording video)

Canon somehow tries to “balance” all customers from different HDSLRs…

Of course Canon CAN implement more features (on every DSLR), but you already know how marketing and sales departments are… They won’t give you everything they can, but just enough to sale and compete, and stay at top in some aspects they are leaders so far.

5D Mark II is the camera which received the biggest amount of improvements requests ardound the world and also the one that was left behind 1D4, 7D and even T2i (regarding Standard 24/25/30p modes), so Canon put efforts to improve and add those modes, and included some “extra bonus” to compensate… (Manual Audio gain, especially thanks to ML project, and Live Histogram in video, which is not so “great deal” since it turns off whilst recording)

There is a big list of possible improvements, already sent to Canon, including some Still-only specific features, but it seems Canon is not willing to make them available to customers (for instance: only 3 frames in bracketing mode in a $2,500 body-only camera is unbelievable and unacceptable…)

Magic Lantern is working on that, and already gave the possibility to shoot more frames in BKT mode, along with other improvements such as Focus Rack, etc., although an “official firmware” with those improvements is always better and desired…

  • I’m glad with your reply. If all of this would come true I would be a very happy Canon EOS 7D owner.

How can Canon EOS 7D users put pressure on Canon to make the adjustments? I’m willing to help in any way possible.

  • I just like to say things that is common knowledge, otherwise people might have to google it. And people dont wish i would just shut it.

  • We asked Canon for it. When it comes out, which we predict will be within the next year or so, we will let you know. And then you can thank us.

  • I noticed that 7D’s movie quality is quite inferior to the 5D’s. It’s MUCH softer than it should be, and this is what Canon should change (but they won’t because they built in the softener for a reason).

  • That is new for me. I thought that the 7D had the same video quiality as the Canon EOS 5D. Only the Canon EOS 5D has a better sensor for low light conditions.
