EF 100 f/2.8L IS Macro Review
Conclusion
“Canon's really raised the bar with this lens: exceptionally sharp, even wide open at f/2.8, with strong results for resistance to chromatic aberration and distortion. Corner shading can be a tad high at f/2.8 when used on a full-frame body, but for macro work, I imagine most people will be using this lens in the stopped-down range to get as much depth-of-field as possible. The addition of image stabilization is overdue, but will nonetheless be welcomed by photographers who don't want to be weighed down by tripods.”

G11 Review
I will have a G11 review up tomorrow night. Same sort of review as the 7D. I think people care most about the high ISO performance, so I'll be focusing on that.

  • The reviewer tested the lens on a 20D and a 5D, both cameras with large pixels, so they do not really explore the limitations of the lens on current camera models.

The Photozone review tests the lens on a 50D and a 5d MK II. The results there show more of the limitations of the lens with a 1 year old model camera rather than 6 year old models.

I’ve come to prefer my TS-E90 over a true macro lens, and sold my old Canon 100mm macro.

IS sounds good, but I am still in doubt about how practical it is for hand held macro shots, and on a tripod, it may or may not help.

  • I bought my wife a G11 when they first appeared, its had reasonable, but not heavy use. I’m pleased with its low light performance, and overall performance. It can get fooled badly in backlit situations, at least for me.

I’ve mostly used it indoors with poor lighting.

It will be interesting to see another viewpoint on its performance.

  • No news? I thought this was a RUMOURS site. Make something up!

I heard that canon were working on a line of weatherproofed EF-S L lenses to compliment the 7D amongst which will be a 30mm f/1.2 USM L, the ultimate standard prime lens for all APS-C cameras.

  • hey I’ve been considering this lens. How do you like it? I’ve heard it could also be good for portraits as well as macro?

  • the 100 2.8L should be an excellent lens for events(weddings/parties) as well. the L should be a plus for the 50D which i use to shoot said events.

  • f/1.2 will likely cost a fortune. I would be happy with an f/1.8 that has a more affordable price.

  • From the sample looks like this lens is ideally suited for APS-C cameras. It looks quite poor on the 5D

  • We just picked one up. It is amazing!!! We have the 90mm TSE and 85mm 1.2 II and this is way sharper than either of them That was shooting at 2.8 on all cameras. Also the focusing seems to be way fast and quite. This is the sharpest lens I’ve used. I think these new lenses are some of the sharpest lenses made. even compared to the Carl Zeiss.

  • The 100 2.8L is phenomenally sharp, but so was the “old” 100 2.8 macro. I’ve done portraits with both, and they are so sharp that it will point out skin wrinkles, etc. It’s good to have this problem, though, because you can always soften in PP.

  • There is a review on the the-digital-picture.com. Very favourable review, including a comparison with the non L lens.
