So what is that fifth unreleased camera that Canon has registered?

On April 26, 2024 Canon registered another unreleased camera with the code name DS126904. While the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1 are going to make their way into the public domain soon, what is that 3rd EOS R camera?

We don't know. There has been no chatter about another other than the two aforementioned cameras. We do have a theory of what it could be, just based on the information int he certifications.

It looks like the third camera will carry WiFi 5 capabilities and not WiFi 6 like with the other two cameras that have been registered and that we all assume are the EOS R5 Mark II and EOS R1.

That sort of information logically points to a more entry level product than a a prosumer/professional camera. We don't think it's an APS-C camera, as that lineup is pretty solid and relatively new. If an APS-C camera were coming, we would expect some kind of prosumer hybrid and that would come with WiFi 6.

Could it be the sub $1000 FF camera to replace the EOS RP? An EOS R9 perhaps? Prior to the pandemic, there was a lot of talk of Canon's desires to hit that price point with a new full-frame camera to replace the EOS RP, but things went a little sideways with product launches and whatnot.

The EOS RP is still stocked by some retailers but seems to have disappeared at others. We're not sure if it's still in the order books or if it's just stock that's hanging around. It is a bit odd to not see any discounts on it after all these years, as it's still sitting at $999 USD for the body. Without rebates, the MSRP on the EOS R8 is still at $1499, so there's some room below it for another camera.

Canon has said one of their targets for growth is in the developing world where cost is a big factor when it comes to things like consumer electronics and cameras. A country like India for example is predicted to have year-over-year growth of about 7% through 2028. There are also a fair number of people in India (understatement) and it's likely going to be a big growth market for a lot of tech products. We don't have sales number for India, but it seems like a logical place for unit sales growth.

This is just a theory. Sometimes just kicking the tires can lead to some good information.

Or we're wrong and it is an EOS R100 Mark II. If so, then everyone please send their thoughts and prayers to Richard.
