After Canon released the pretty incredible R6 Mark III with a slew of features never seen before in a prosumer scaled camera body, it seems that the rumor mill over in Sony land dialed it up to 12 as worry set in over the fact that the R6 Mark II was already the worlds best selling full frame camera, and Canon decided to outclass THAT camera in almost every single way with the Canon R6 Mark III.
The Rumored Specifications
The rumored specifications look pretty lightweight, which makes me wonder if this is to get something new on the shelves just before Christmas. You know, just in case someone actually wants to purchase a Sony camera. Who knows, maybe they've been bad this year; it would be a decent coal substitute in 2025.
The rumored specifications from Sony Alpha Rumors so far are;
- 33MP sensor (could be new – or the same as the A7 IV)
- improved fps rate
- 8 stops IBIS
- new AI chip like the Sony A1II
- Free-Angle Tilting 3.2″ Touchscreen LCD
- 2x dual Type A SD slot
- no C5 button
- Improved EVF (5.6m dot?)
- Same Sony A7rV body design.
- price close to $3000
- Announcement in early December
- Limited batch ships before Christmas
Now, there are a few things I wish Canon had done, such as the Free Angle Titling Screen, because I'm not an articulating LCD screen fan. I would rather one that tilts. So a combination of articulating and tilting would be the best of both worlds.
There was also a surprise, but it was still unconfirmed if this was legit. But it seems as if the A7 V will not have Open Gate, will not have Pre Capture (which Canon had since the R6 Mark II), and 4k60p will still be cropped (which Canon had done away with on the R6 Mark II). Which seems like a miss against it's biggest rival camera.
With that, the price is a bit of a surprise given the lack of features that we are hearing about, as the A7 IV was announced at $2499, and this camera is going to come in at somewhere nearly the R6 Mark III price, without the R6 Mark III featureset. So if the price is indeed accurate, I'm leaning towards these specifications not being exactly what the final camera will be, and that there will be more features to warrant another price increase. Sony has steadily increased the price of the A7 line from $1999 for the A7 III in 2018.
This isn't the first time that Sony has released a camera in the latter part of November either, as the A1 II was announced on November 19, 2024. So it's indeed possible that Sony may be doing this again.
We Still Appreciate You, Sony
Now, I have to be a bit fair; I hope I don't get too much hate mail over this rumor article. Without Sony's push and drive in the mirrorless market space, we would not have the amazing Canon cameras of today. Competition is good – and if Sony does indeed come up with a new camera quickly before the end of the year, it's going to be an interesting next 30 or so days.
