It looks like Sony is going to announce a lens a lot of people in these parts have wanted to see Canon announce. They're going to be announcing an FE 50-150mm f/2 GM lens likely on April 23, 2025.

This is the second f/2 zoom from Sony in the last couple of months following the impressive FE 28-70mm f/2 GM that has started shipping.

Rumored Specifications

The new Sony FE 50-150mm f/2 GM is rumored to launch at €4400, which would like put the USD price tag around $3500 before sales taxes.

  • Weight: 1340g/2.95lbs
  • Length: 200mm/7.9″
  • White Paint Finish
  • Announcement: On or around April 23, 2025
  • Shipping in June
  • Price: €4400

Canon RF 70-150mm f/2L IS USM

Canon has been working on a similar type of optical formula as the new Sony. We have seen a few optical patents for more f/2 zooms and one of those most likely designs is an RF 70-150mm f/2L IS USM. Having IS built into such a lens would differentiate it from the Sony.

An f/2 zoom range from 24mm all the way up to 150mm would pretty nice, albeit an expensive duo for your kit.

Summary

It wouldn't surprise us to see Canon follow the same path with new f/2 zoom lenses by announcing an RF 28-70mm f/2L USM replacement along with a longer f/2 zoom such as an RF 70-150mm f/2L.

These lenses likely wouldn't come until 2026 as Canon works to fill out their new APS-C line of cameras and lenses along with the arrival of the EOS R6 Mark III.

  1. Canon makes the 24-105LZ for 3 grand USD > Internet : BOOOOOOOOO

Sony makes 50-150GM that sits awkwardly in between 28-70GM and Tamron 35-150, charges 3.5 grand USD > Internet : INNOVATION~

Great way to start a conversation by calling me fanboy. So 3500USD will justify it? I don't think so.

If Canon comes out with a 50-150/2L or 70-150/2L, a $3500 cost would not surprise me in the least. I'd preorder one, regardless. Hopefully they won't take nearly as long as the 6 years it took Sony to follow Canon's 28-70/2.

Starting a meaningful conversation with you would be a waste of time judging by the tone of your original post. You wanted to jab at Sony so you saw what you wanted to see.

I would order a lens like that at $3500 and it looks like neuro as well so you are clueless on lens R&D and pricing. Canon won't be asking for your insight anytime soon 🤣

Personally, 40-135/2L will do for me, I use 40mm more than 35 or 50. So I can skip the RF100L & RF135L. And finally something can replace my EF135L.

So what are you doing here? You could just say you want it and ignore my comment.

I will jab Sony all day because Sony punishes a1 users, which I was. For an expensive flagship, I get treated like peasants, and you expect me to keep kissing $ony's a$$? You can do it. 😉

There’s already the 28-70/2, I’d prefer less overlap. 70-150/2 is pretty reasonable and could come in a little bigger than the 70-200/2.8.

I did like the 135/2L a lot, but found myself using the 70-200/2.8 II much more. I’ve been occasionally tempted by the RF 135/1.8 but much less frequently since getting the 85/1.2L DS.

Saw your bullcrap comment and called you out on it since no one else did yet.

Canon doesn't give a damn about you either, just your money. They do not know you by name nor give you exclusive flagship owner treatment. How do I know? You're not the only one that owned flagships.

It seemed to me as more of a jab at people who jab at Canon until Sony does it.
It is not just a Sony fanboy thing either.
Canon users do it here all of the time.
  10. Officially announced. Same length as their 70-200/2.8 but fatter. No IS, 1340 g (3 lbs). $3900.
95mm filter size (same as Canon's 28-70 f2), aperture ring...
  11. If I was just starting out. The two f2 Zooms would be enough to get Me in to the Sony ecosystem.
If Canon launches an xx-150/2 zoom, I’ll buy it to pair with my 28-70/2, but for me the combination of the RF 24-105/2.8 and 100-300/2.8 is much more useful.
  12. I am not much of a zoom guy, but that Sony lens does look good 🤔
  13. A Canon version of this lens would be an instant buy for me. I love my 100-300 f/2.8L, but an extra stop of light on the baseball field for closer action when the sun is setting would be niiiiiice. My EF 135 f/2L does great for this purpose, but a longer f/2 zoom would be hot business.

Unreasonable request: Make it a 70-170mm. The extra 20mm probably blows up the weight and cost, but I can dream.
  14. I wonder, how big, heavy and expensive a RF 70-200mm f 2 L IS USM would be? If it accepts also TC's..
The EF 400 f/4L should give a decent idea on the size and price, the front element should have the same 100mm diameter.

Not the comparison I'd have chosen. A 70-200/2 with a 1.4x TC would give a 98-280/2.8...that sounds very much like an existing RF lens that costs $9500.
