The details are scant right now but between the rumors and what seems to have been confirmed and what we can see from the EOS R1 objectively, we can probably make some good assumptions about what we do expect from these cameras. The TL;DR from the press announcement is basically;

  • Aiming for release in 2024
  • Professional mirrorless camera with high durability and reliability
  • Conventional video engine DIGIC X
  • Newly developed video engine DIGIC Accelerator
  • Newly developed CMOS sensor
  • High-dimensional fusion of new video engine system and deep learning technology
  • Achieving high-speed and high-precision object recognition
  • AF “Action Priority” function
  • We are proceeding with field tests of this unit to support the capture of decisive and moving moments at upcoming global sporting events.

I'll be updating this article over time as we get more images and information. So check on it often.

For starters, let's set one thing clear. Canon never holds anything back when it comes to the 1 series. It gets it all. I may whine about Canon from time to time (a lot more times when it's about the EOS R100), but when it comes to Canon deciding that it's time for the 1 series – it is going to be the best camera that Canon can develop. Canon has an insane level of pride when it comes to the 1 series.

We have approximately overlaid the EOS R3 and EOS R1 to give an estimate on the form and function of the new 1 series beast. Notably, the top EVF hunch is far more pronounced. That could be because of a few reasons including a much improved EVF. Also, driving EVFs at the ludicrous speeds demanded by top cameras can be a significant heat source, so moving those electronics a little further away from the sensor can certainly be a good thing.

The left side button layout appears to have been kept from the EOS R3 – something that surprises me a bit, I had thought that Canon would have migrated over the 3-button arrangement from the DSLR 1 series cameras to maintain consistency. But it appears as if the two buttons on the EOS R3 are here to stay.

Canon R3 Top View

The button arrangement on the right side of the camera appears to be different, but it's really hard to tell with the angle of view that we currently have.

The R1 is also much wider on the grip side than the EOS R3. I suspect this will be far more comfortable with gloves on as it has more space between the grip and the side of the lens. Having more room there allows for less accidental button pressing and also a far more comfortable camera to use for longer periods.

With the EOS R1 certainly being taller and wider than the EOS R3, we can expect that means that Canon can drive the electronics much faster because of better heat dissipation throughout the camera, and also have room for that brand new DIGIC Accelerator.

We hope that Canon will grace us with more pictures and details soon.

These are the features that catch my interest most. Hopefully those will trickle down by time, hopefully already into an R5m2 or an R6m3.

    • Newly developed CMOS sensor
This is also very interesting, because of design (e.g. BSI, GS, etc.) but if Canon stays true to itself, this sensor will be for the "1" series only.

The 1DX III sensor was reused in the R6

  2. not really true that they never hold anything back on the 1-series. They never got the eye-control AF of the 3-series (likely because it simply wasn't good enough). Hoping they add an improved version for this one though. It seems to work very well on the R3 and anyone who doesn't want to use it could simply turn it off completely.

  3. "... upcoming global sporting events."

I wonder if there's a reason they're not using the 'Olympic' and Paralympic' words? Because I presume that's what they mean. Perhaps Canon is not an official Olympic Partner, in which case the IOC can get very huffy indeed about using the Sacred Name.

Yes, and a similar future re-use is likely to be my only personal experience of the upcoming R1 sensor!! Therefore, may it be wonderful!

I wonder if it also features an "all eyes are open" feature that selects that picture from the burst. This is one of my main uses for the 40fps on my R8, increasing the likelyhood of having a picture where everyone is looking straight into the lens and have all their eyes open.

For birds (apparently I've reached that age where bird turn from "poop bombers" to "hey, a yellow tailed finch warbler!"), I use it for the opposite, a shot of the nictitating membrane :)

I think 1DX iii sensor is upgraded the mark ii sensor and improve the AA filter.
They can reuse it to R6 so I don't think they will use R3 sensor for R6iii

I wanted to say that the 1dx3 sensor had much less rolling shutter, but I can't find the numbers on that. Canon seems to have switched from line-skipped 4k in the 1dx2 to oversampled 4k in the 1dx3. So rolling shutter went from 14ms to 32ms, it actually is worse in the newer model for video!

So I'm not so sure anymore that the 1dx2 and 1dx3 sensors are different, apart from the AA filter. I would assume so :)

Probably because the Euros start in a month and it’ll be used there before the Olympics… Hence the references to football in the press release.

Suggests the R1 will have eye-controlled AF, which is one reason the R3’s EVF is so large.

  10. From that bit of extra stuff on the top panel above the grip, could that be a new location for the on-off switch? Not sure I much like the increased size over the R3, but can understand why it is happening.

  11. I don't know if someone already noticed it, but the R1 has a little LED on the right front, i expect it to be a indication LED for video recording, like we see on some newer Sony cameras. A great feature for vlogging :ROFLMAO:

That, on the other hand, tells me, that the R1 will be a Beast for Photos AND Videos. Plus i also expect this feature to also show up on the upcomming R Cameras.

  12. The Canon EOS R1, a flagship re-invented. Lots of subtle differences compared to the EOS R3

So a tweaked R3. Honestly, after so long, I was expecting something groundbreaking. This is a bit disappointing. So far I’m thinking this sounds like more of a R3 Mk2.
"The EOS R1 is a mirrorless camera geared toward professionals that brings together Canon’s cutting-edge technology and combines top-class performance with the strong durability and high reliability sought in a flagship model." - Canon press release

That sounds like more than a tweak to me.

As a practical matter, this press release is just a "first tease". They may be saving some "exciting details" for the official launch.

the layout was always going to be a tweaked R3. The guts appear to be zip like the R3.

Professionals don't want to use radically different bodies. so from the ergonomic point of view, it should be subtle, unless they read the room entirely wrong with the R3 ergonomics.

I think Canon had to wait until the improvements were done to EyeAF and they still are doing much in that regard as we saw in the last 6 months via patents.
