BCN has done its annual report of sales data from Japanese retailers and has come up with a winner for the year 2025 in Japan. This only accounts for Japanese retailers, but the Japanese market sells more cameras per capita than any other market, and of course, it’s the home country for most of the camera manufacturers, so it’s bragging rights.

Canon’s EOS R50 is the Top Selling Camera

Canon has done quite well with 1st and 3rd placements with the Canon EOS R50 and the Canon EOS R10 taking the 1 and 3rd spots, respectively. Canon usually packages up various kits for the R50 and R10 and puts them out for sale, which are usually quite popular in the Japanese markets. So it’s not a real surprise to me anyway that the EOS R50 and R10 have done so well.

Since this is overall sales volume, it is usually determined by price and affordability – but surprisingly, Canon’s cheapest camera, the EOS R100, is noticeably missing. If this is indeed the year of APS-C, don’t be surprised that the R100 gets a refresh, as Canon’s cheapest camera is usually taking the top spot, and Canon’s only 2 cameras in the top 10 will be something they wish to correct.

Sony does very well

Sony shows an excellent showing with their VLOGCAM ZV-E10 II, taking 2nd place, and Sony overall placing 4 cameras in the top 10 versus Canon’s 2 cameras. More impressively, Sony has the only full-frame camera in the top 10, the small α7C II, which is in 8th position.

Interestingly, it’s Sony’s smaller brick format cameras (the E10 series for APS-C, which do not have EVFs) and the brick format full frame camera, the A7CII, which does have an EVF mounted in the top left corner of the camera body.

The Missing Camera from Canon

I am honestly I bit surprised that the EOS R50 V hasn’t sold as well as Canon expected and at least matched the sales volume of say, the E10 or the E10 II, as it was squarely designed to compete against the Sony models. But it’s absent from the top 10, even though it was released in March of last year, and the Sony cameras are older, and usually the sales favor the new camera.

It could be the lenses, as the Canon R50V still doesn’t have a good complement of APS-C lenses made by Canon, while the Sony cameras have a wealth of options.

The Full Top 10 List

Rounding out the rest of the top 10 are 2 cameras from Nikon – their smaller APS-C cameras with the Z50 II coming in 6th place, followed by their 10th placed Z 30. Not forgotten are Fujifilm and Olympus, both with one camera placed in the top 10.

The full list is;

  1. EOS R50 (Canon)
  2. VLOGCAM ZV-E10 II (Sony)
  3. EOS R10 (Canon)
  4. VLOGCAM ZV-E10 (Sony)
