Viltrox has announced the first lenses that it will supply to the L-mount. In case you missed it, on September 1st, Viltrox officially announced that the company was joining the L-mount alliance.
As a new member, Viltrox is the 10th company to join the L-Mount Alliance since the public announcement of the L-Mount standard at Photokina in 2018. The alliance consists of founding members Leica Camera AG, SIGMA, and Panasonic, as well as Ernst Leitz Wetzlar GmbH, DJI, ASTRODESIGN, SAMYANG Optics, Blackmagic Design, and SIRUI. This collaboration enables Viltrox to develop products with the L-Mount which will present great benefits for a wide range of photo and video applications.
This provides new markets for Viltrox and also gives them the ability to create lenses for Panasonic full-frame cameras.
The first two lenses that Viltrox will produce for the L-mount are the AF 16mm F1.8 L and the AF 28mm F4.5 L, which are decent bang-for-the-buck lenses that don't have competitors in the existing L-mount ecosystem from either Sigma or Panasonic.
The Viltrox AF 16mm F1.8 is a fast f/1.8 ultra wide prime, with nano coatings, STM motor, and a very sophisticated design of 15 Elements in 12 Groups.
Featuring an ultrawide angle of view for Sony E-mount full-frame cameras, the Viltrox AF 16mm f/1.8 FE Lens is an ideal choice for a wide variety of photographic pursuits, including landscape and architecture photography, astrophotography, and creative videography requiring close-up capabilities with expansive backgrounds.

The Viltrox AF 28mm F4.5 L is a little different, as it's a very compact pancake prime meant as a walk-around lens. I love this concept. I would absolutely get this lens, especially if it were infrared-friendly. This is a near lens cap lens.

The Viltrox AF 28mm f/4.5 is a classic lens offering the perfect focal length for street photography. Thanks to its ultrathin and lightweight design, the lens remains almost unnoticed, which is beneficial for obtaining candid shots. When presented with a backlit situation, the lens produces a starburst effect that transforms light rays into spiky beams. An innovative aspect of this lens is the integrated cap, which opens and closes via a slide lever, eliminating worries of losing the cap and providing better protection against dust. Additionally, the lens is protected by multilayer nanocoating that prevents dust, oil, and water damage.
It remains to be seen how this partnership will work out, but the more options available for photographers, the better. Let's hope Canon gets its RF mount act together. The ball is in your court, Canon.
