We reported back in mid January that new firmware was going to be announced ahead of CP+, which is currently running for the both the EOS R1 and EOS R5 Mark II
That has not come to pass and we continue to wait for bug fixes and feature enhancements for both cameras, including the authentication system for the EOS R1.
As with all things firmware related, they'll come when they're done. So we missed the mark on this one. We have seen an updated firmware version installed on an EOS R1, and we think it's likely beta software in testing. However, we haven't seen anything in regards to the EOS R5 Mark II.

One of the big issues for EOS R5 Mark II shooters is battery performance in moderate to extreme cold. The camera will show that the battery is fully charged, but the camera will die almost instantly. A lot of the time this is corrected by simply removing the battery and re-inserting it.
We have been able to verify the issue with the battery in those types of conditions.
However, that's a big bug and there could be something deeper than a simple software fix. An issue with the battery would likely delay any sort of feature updates. We don't know this for certain, but it makes sense to us.

We don't know exactly how the EOS R1 authentication system is going to be implemented, so we can't really comment about the scope of such an update. This coming feature will meet C2PA standard and Canon is directly working with the Content Authenticity Initiative (CAI). It feels like a feature that should already exist in professional Canon camera bodies.
For now, we'll keep waiting and apologize for getting your hopes up. We also wanted to see firmware sooner than later for both cameras.

Canon's answer: Everything's ok...
If the coming firmware doesn't help, I will sell the R5 II and possibly replace it with an R5.
It feels like a major problem, and maybe the fix could be the worst case scenario (recalls). Sometimes those sorts of things take a long time isolate. It's really frustrating a lot of shooters.
So that's why I think any sort of feature update can't come until that's fixed.
Hopefully this new Firmware update fixes this! Please Canon! At least match the capabilities of the older R5C in the R5 Mark II
4K downsampling means full sensor readout and extensive CPU processing, i.e. much more heat and power draw than 8K RAW or 4K subsampled.
The built-in fan of R5C has much bigger and more straight duct (and bigger fan blades I guess) than R5II with fan grip, i.e. it offers better cooling with less power consumption (less airflow resistance and probably lower fan speed).
I would love to see 4KHQ60 added and accessible, for example, if the fan grip is attached. Right now I use the fan grip as just a dual battery grip, occasionally set to minimal fan speed.
I had a similar issue with a Leica M. After 2 fruitless visits to their so-called Customer Care, I addressed Leica's CEO. And my problem found a very quick solution. Unfortunately Canon's CEO's office is in Japan.
How can Canon find my experience "normal"? What's the use of warranty? Such a behavior strengthens me in my decision to buy all my future Canon products from grey market. Service can't be worse...
No, I won't jump ship! 😉
I find the customer service much better and I find it easier to get a warranty replacement or exchange - not to mention the massive price reduction due to tax savings. I suppose when the push comes to the shove I might be out in the cold with a black listed serial number or something, but I can’t say I have ever come across an issue making it a problem or even apparent in well over 20 years.
I don’t know why the people that think it doesn’t matter should shut up and only the people that think it does matter can shout about it.
Pick your choice and go with it.
I don’t know why so many people have to get so het up about such a simple thing. You can go online right now and buy cameras with anything from fractions of megapixels to 100’s plus.
Fixating on why a single model has or hasn’t got some random persons specified amount of MP is bizarre.
Also, some grey market companies have, as you wrote, an excellent reputation when issues arise.
The R5 II was bought from an official Canon store, in the hope of being on the safe side in case of trouble with a brand new camera. This was an error...
Next time: So long, Canon authorized dealerships!
Sorry my friend, I hit the wrong person.
I ended up sending them back to Midwest Photo (who I found to be great to deal with, so thanks again to whichever CR admin put me in touch with them when the R5 Mark ii came out!) to test. They tested a few various ways and found....no issues with the battery. When I tested prior to sending them the batteries, it happened at least 2-3 times which is what prompted me to send them (those batteries aren't cheap!).
So when I got them back, of course I tested them again and low and behold...there was a slight drainage of maybe 2-4% over a couple of days, which I guess isn't horrible. I'm not sure why they were draining so bad prior to sending them and so little when getting them back. I'm clueless on that. I did search on the web for similar issues and did find a few but not many.
I ended up getting third party (which yes, I know you're not supposed to use) to test out. The third party batteries held charge in or out of the camera, unlike the Canon batteries, for a FRACTION of the cost. All of the features on the camera still worked with no issue. Zero issues.
It's a bit upsetting when you spend around $5k and a setup and there's such silly issues as a battery draining without even being used. The only thing I can think of is maybe because the batteries were brand new, they had to be used and charged up a few times before keeping the charge. I know that sounds ridiculous and maybe it is; I just feel like that's something I may have heard a looong time ago.
I definitely don't blame Midwest Photo, I only have good things to say about them. They are extremely responsive and helpful. I don't know if they are considered one of the BIG dealers but if they are, they sure don't feel like it - and I mean that in a good way. They come off as people that want to not only earn your business but ensure you're satisfied afterwards by being helpful, even if your issue is odd, like mine was. I'm only speaking about Midwest Photo because a few of the posts earlier seemed to have a disdain for some of the big companies.
P.S - I don't work for them. Lol. I just believe in "word of mouth" when a company is deserving. Which is rare these days. At least rare that it's good, unfortunately.
As you may have read my post, I had similar discharging issues.
PS: Mine went through several cycles without any improvement. 🙂
I have never used the brand, but it is sold by the big retailers. Not a personal endorsement, but worth a look. I don't recall any major stories of third-party batteries from the known brands causing issues.
