From one good source
This is a CR2 source that has been right on multiple occasions and missed a few.
Next week I’m told we will see the following.
Camera:
1Ds Mark IV at 32mp. No other spec details.
There will be no 60D at this time.
Lenses:
EF 24-70 f/2.8L IS
I’m told this is for sure, take it to the bank. I have yet to hear from CR3 people in regards to the lens.
2 other lenses would be announced. One would be niche market and the other an EF mount lens. There is currently nothing more definitive out there.
Flash [CR1]
2 different sources said we’ll see a new speedlite. Both are CR1
There should be ton of info over the weekend, and I’ll be awake for most of it.

yes 1Ds4 coming big time soon. 60D later this year or never?
looking forward to the lenses, any primes you think?
am i alone on this forum or noone looking forward to new Canon goodies? i cant wait!
well if no 60 now, then I’ll just havta get the lightwt T2.
Oh well, it’s cheaper and won’t hurt my neck as much.
but still, sad.
24-70 f2.8L IS & 35 f1.2L pwease.
question is will the 24-70 have the new HIS or the IS of the 70-200 2.8 IS II?
I’m just curious. Is it so hard to Photoshop a “IV” and three holes under the “EOS-1” mark (for the microphone)?
amazing. Can’t wait. Would still like a new 5d as well.
Not so. The lighter body may very well hurt your neck even more.
hurrah for the 24-70! hope this is true.
Release your breath, amigo.
On an iphone…. yes, it is.
I e-mailed you one. You didn’t get it?
24-70 L IS is a good news … surely the 35 1.2 II too, the I need a revamp …
+ A niche market lens ?? a new TS, like a 40mm ? they only renewed
the 2 widest TS lens last year … (Just bought me a 24TS, great lens !)
most likely a new EF-S, as most of the recent new lenses are L series and FF oriented …
perhaps a decent medium zoom, as they are all crappy in ef-s … only short
lenses are good for the moment, like 10-20 and 17-55, there is a need for a decent
zoom around 70 mm.
it’s not on my phone. :)
Will be nice, mind it’ll be $40,599 and not available until 2099 for us mortals. The Avatar of the DSLR’s one hopes!
More likely the one found in the 70-200. The 24-70 isn’t a macro lens.
Check your e-mail, man. I sent it to [email protected] yesterday.
Do you have any idea about the new 24-70 price in UK? Should I get rid of the old one, as I have a few good reasons?
No 60d :(
Forcing me to a 7d… sigh.
I sent it again, monsieur…
I need a DSLR w/ at least 720 video by late May. Seriously considering the Nikon 90D now. T2i is still a candidate.
August 2011. Feb 2011 if you’re lucky.
Ha. I’ll keep waiting, for now.
I’ll just probably go for a 5DmkIII when it comes out. The mkII almost has the low light performance I’m after. One hopes the mkIII will do better.
As for the resolution, there’s always SRAW modes to get rid of all those extra pixels. I just want a camera that performs in the lowest light possible — I don’t need more than 8mp or so.
Heck, lately I use SRAW2 in my 50D, that’s 3.7 mp, and that’s enough for 99% of anything interesting. Lenses go further, too… lenses made to perform with high MP cameras work great with low ones, or modes like SRAW which amount to the same thing.
I’d like to see Lenses made for 1.6x bodies that are weather and dust sealed IOW L lenses in efs or, better yet, ef lenses in zoom ranges more suitable to 1.6x but that will work on FF. I’d like to have 7D and a full frame to without duplication. I’ll still get more lenses, I’ll just have more range covered.
ok, that is male holstein.
I want a better 28 f/1.8… all the bad reviews are messing with my decision. Its been 15 years since that particular lens was announced… would there be any replacement soon?
I want the announcement to be the 1Ds4, not because I want that camera…but because it will then open the door for the 5D3 to come Fall 2010…..
Lenses I have been waiting for:
14-24 2.8 (Canon’s version of the Nikon)
24-70 2.8 IS (I would sell my 24-70 to get the IS version)
100-400 4.5-5.6 IS II (I actually would like a slightly faster version….f/4-4.8 or f/4-5.0….also need it to be a true 400mm at the long end and sharp. I like the push/pull because at 100mm the lens would fit small in my backpack…or…a 200-500 f/4-5.6 push/pull
35 1.4 II
135 2.0 IS
Definitely looking forward to the announcement. I’m going to guess that the other two lenses are: a new fish eye lens and the 35mm f/1.4 II.
“The other will be EF” seems to indicate that one of the lenses will be EF-S. There was some talk a little while ago about an EF-S 60mm IS macro…that’s where my money is (mostly because I just got a regular version in the fall). Maybe in the bigger market picture, though, a low-light prime is a “niche” lens and we’ll get an EF-S 30mm f/1.4.
Buáááááá!!! Where is my 60D??? Is this line dead???
Probably dpreview is testing the camera this week…
I’m happy to see both the 1d Mark 3’s be finally replaced, but the old 50D is leaving one really large void in the low end:
According to report from Earls Court London Video Show, this announcement could also include the Firmware Update for the 5D Mark II.
It would make lot of sense, 2 Full Frame DSLRs (the only current FF sensor) with Full HD capabilities.
The 1Ds Mark IV with (probably) even more video features.
What the…?
What’s coming next week? A 40D and a BG-E2N to my place (seems all I did was buy a 400D minus 360. Oh well, still cheaper than a 550D and no doubt better). Aside from that maybe one of the many artillery shells being fired on the training grounds at the army base next to me.
Where’s spoiler?
if no 60D now, what’s the next event where Canon would typically announce
I’m assuming that per pixel noise will be the same or worse than 1DsIII, I hope the noise looks like very fine film grain.
I’d still prefer no noise @ 100-1600ISO, but Canon prefers to keep the noise at the same level.
Hope the 3D materializes this fall, 5DIII this time next year at the earliest.
24-70L IS :)
EF? 14-24(with 3D?), 100-400(200-500), 35, 28, f2 zoom.
niche? EF-s macro or fish
We’re in the same boat. My xTi ebay auction ends on Monday night. Tuesday morning will bring either 60d or 7d.
If the per-pixel noise is the same, the overall image noise will be improved.
SX20 replacement and how about a 1000D successor.
200-500/5.6 L iS… YES PLEASE…. hell, I’ll take a 500/5.6 prime too (or even better a 600/5.6 prime and a 200-500/5.6 L IS…. they really need to breath a little life into the long end of things…. perhaps “niche market” would be a slower long lens instead of another TS-E? The remaining “old” TS-Es (45 and 90) are by all accounts still really good, no? Please, new, more affordable SHARP stabilized long glass….PLEASE!!! :D
“mkII almost has the low light performance”
Know any that’s better, except maybe the D3s?
They do some of the most flawed tests and get very defensive whenever anyone questions in their forums.
dpreview tests aren’t good for anything except maybe looking at the specs and the interface layouts.
I know whenever someone refers to digital noise as “film-like” they know nothing about digital sensors.
“I’d still prefer no noise @ 100-1600ISO”
See what I mean! ROFL
I can’t wait for the 1Ds4. It is going to dominate the market! Nikon doesn’t stand a chance of competing with this camera for atleast a couple of years. Looks like I made the right move after all. Image noise will definently be better than 1Ds3. Canon always improves upon things like this, just look at the difference between 1D3 and 1D4. I’m expecting similiar improvements between the 1Ds3 and 1Ds4. Canon pretty much tries to improve everything from model to model. Nikon just focuses on image noise! They are far to single minded for me, but great for those photographers who never print pictures. Personally, I don’t see any reason to take pictures if they never make it to a frame. Having 32MP is going to be incredible. The flexibility and detail you will get is going to be truly stunning. I can’t wait to do a wall sized print with this baby! BRING IT ON! Maybe Nikon will realize someday… people still actually print pictures!
1000d is getting a sudden price drop down under. Usually means something is going down!
So basically. Canon’s best and only high ISO camera will be now and in the future, the 5D MK II. If you need anything else at a reasonable price point there wont be any.
Since should this (amazing quess) spec of 32MP be correct the 5D MK III likely be 32 MP as well = poor high ISO performance
This blows if the 60d isn’t coming now. A 7d is one option but for the price of a 7d + a18-55IS one can get a T2i + a 17-55/2.8
1000d .. What in the world is that?
ef-s does not make sense to release along with 1Ds IV. Here’s hoping the other lens will be a 100-400 mkII. The niche lens could also be a macro, maybe a 200 3.5 HIS L? (But what I’m really hoping for is a 300 f4L IS mkII)!
Really?!? Please learn how technology improves. Canon will increase megapixels AND make the sensor less noisy! This is typical technological improvement. Canon will find a way to get more megapixels on the same size sensor while decreasing noise! Canon is constantly looking for ways to make better sensors. This is one of the main reasons Canon is makes their own sensors, unlike Nikon who looks to others to produce sensors for them.
24-70 2.8 IS
and either
a 14-24 2.8 OR 35mm 1.4 II
I hope that niche market lens is a 180mm 3.5 II L Macro!
720???
T1i T2i 7D 5DII 1DIV D90 D3s
the entry level model, also known as the rebel XS
i would guess at least 400/500 extra.
No, 24-70/f2.8L IS and 100-400/F4-5.6L IS II please
I wonder if canon will be kind enough to unleash such a 32 MP sensor to the unwashed masses waiting to buy a 5d Mark III by early 2011 or are they going to pull a Nikon D3x on us and keep high MP sensors exclusive for high-priced bodies.
720p is easy. Been done for awhile now. 1080p is different story. Nikons don’t have it and t1i has gimped.
No, 24-70 f2.8L is and 14-24 2.8 please.
The AF system in the 7D is worth its price in gold, even if the 60D materialize next week which I seriously doubt, it still won’t have the 7D AF capabilities, and that makes all the difference
Blows if the 1ds4 isn’t coming. I need the 1ds3 resale value to drop to pick one up!
Aah one of those models for ignorant folk.
Really?!?!? I have been contemplating switching to Nikon for over a year now. You know why? Because their sensors are years ahead of Canon. I know Canon finance their own research and make their own sensors, while Nikon is doing the unthinkable.. having their sensors made for them by Sony.
Nevertheless, I recommend the following article so you can see for yourself. Comparable resolutions, comparable technology. Being a Canon shooter, I find it to be quite sad actually.
http://diglloyd.com/articles/LensAndCameraIssues/PushingTheBlacks.html
Hi
I hope for a new 400mm 5.6 IS or a 500mm 5.6 IS
The 21MP on my 5D2 is already more than I need. I’d rather see snappier AF and overall handling on a 5D2/3D/callitwhatyouwill.
There’s a rebate on the XS right now.
I second that one, although being on a crop body I am not that interested in the 24-70, since I have the 17-55 IS.
But a 100-400 successor, maybe with a little increase in focal length range (like 70-400, or maybe 100-450ish), 4 stop IS (or better), and of course improved IQ (in particular bokeh, but of course also sharpness, but perhaps even more important, given that the current 100-400 already has the potential of being superb, but many samples seem to end up delivering sub par results, an improved QC!). And please Canon, stay reasonable with the price “update” compared to the predecessor.
And if now Canon can get the AF on my 7D to behave, I would probably get one near the end of the year.
32mp will be fine. lower megapixels doesn’t always equal less noise..
if that was true, then the worlds “lowest noise” camera would of been the Contax 1 Digital (6mp, full frame) but it was almost unusably noisy. =p
OK that’s fair.
No doubts it’s worth gold. However I need to upgrade glass too and my wallet doesn’t carry gold, only bronze.
EF-S 24-70 F/2.8 VR?! I don’t think so… That lens will be too big and too heavy.
There’s nothing wrong with wanting the noise to appear less artificial, is there?
It most certainly won’t be labeled as VR ;)
If Canon releases both 14-24 f/2.8 and 24-70 f/2.8 IS with comparable optical quality as the Nikkor counterparts, many people will be very happy. :D
That is a big IF though…
If you think it will be too big and heavy for a pro then take a look at the 400f/2.8. Your a clown, go learn how to tie your shoe laces.
I have read that article. However, realize something DxO does NOT take into account megapixels into their calculations. There is no way in HE11 I could make a living doing what I do with photography with only 12MP, I don’t care if those 12MP spit out perfect DxO marks! You can only go so big before you start being pixels on prints, PERIOD! You might not have noise… but hey you can only print a picture a little bigger than a piece of paper (overexageration)! Seriously, the pictures I take, print, and use are NOT NOISY in the slightest, they show no signs of streaking or grid noise. (THIS IS ALL LOST IN PRINTING ANYWAYS!) If I only used my images on the web, it might mean more to me I guess, but if that were the case I could probably save myself tens of thousands of dollars and use a point and shoot. Nikon absolutly has a slight 1-2 stop advantage in regards to ISO, but Canon has 2 TIMES the ammount of pixels! For me, this is absolutly NO CONTEST!!!! GAME OVER! CANON WINS HANDS DOWN! FAT LADY can take her big A** and get off the stage!
Don’t take this the wrong way. If you think you require more than 12mp then I’m sorry you are dead wrong. What size of an image do you require?
I have made prints with my D3x and D3s at identical settings mounted on a tripod and enlarged them with genuine fractals to 32″x48″ in size and standing 4-5 feet away it’s impossible to tell the difference.
The fact of the matter is a 12mp sensor was good enough for so long and people were making massive prints off them. Now everyone thinks they need 20mp+ since canon came out with a POS camera that provides it.
In reality I think we’ve hit the happy medium as far as megapixel requirements go. The higher those megapixels climb the harder and harder it’s going to be for a computer to be able to work with those files as well and people tend to forget that
One more thing, Canon released the 1Ds3 a year before the D3x, which is an eternity in this day and age when technology doubles every couple of years! Don’t get me wrong, Nikon’s are great cameras… for people who only have electronic galleries. If all your work is only shown on blogs, websites, etc. then get a Nikon, if not… better stick with Canon! Nikon lenses don’t compare to Canon’s lenses, their lens mount IS SO LAST DECADE, and their megapixel counts are being outdone by point and shoots. ANY QUESTIONS AS TO WHICH IS BETTER?
Show me that 32″x48″ and I’ll show you EXACTLY why you need more than 12mp! Don’t take this the wrong way, but go on a Nikon site.
Ohh, and you’re seriously saying you’re limited by your computer? What do you live by the same philosophy with computers as you do with your computers? I can picture it now… 5GB hard drives are perfect! I would NEVER need more than a gig of RAM. Nikon users crack me up! Have fun with your POS 12mp sensor, and blogging on a Canon site! ;)
I wait for that one as well. It is a shame for Canon
My guess is that Canon is waiting for Nikon to reveal its D90 succesor. Canon does not need to release the 60D yet and the longuer it takes the higher possibility of improving the xxD series specifications. One thing this series needs is a new AF system, something like 5D mkII has with the 7D software 9-11 points with 6 assist points for tracking moving subjects plus the spot focus from the 7D would be more than enough for 95% of the users, add to that the t2i screen and that video some user are asking for @ 900$ and we would have a top sellling camera
I am in the same boar with you regarding the 5D3 and the 135 big aperture IS, but I would also incline for a 200 prime with IS
Bah, I was replying and it got lost. So once more..
This test has nothing to do with DxO other than that it is mentioned at the very end. I think the images speak very clearly.
Hm, resolution. The cameras being compared are 21 and 24MP, so your complaint about 12MP is sort of misplaced. Of course D3x costs 3 times more than 5D2, but please consider that in a few weeks’ time there might be a completely new D700x with this, possibly further improved, sensor. Competing directly with Canon’s 5D line, at similar price point.
If that happens, what excuse will Canon have? None. Bummer.
Couldn’t agree more. Problem is the price ALWAYS goes up. Have you seen the price of the Nikon 500mm? It’s $2300 more than the Canon. If Canon decides to follow suit, there is no incentive to stay with Canon for me. I will get a Nikon D3S instead.
true, so true
I am happy with my 50D
Maybe have a look at the Sigma 30 1.4.
Again, I must agree.
If you are on a crop body, that is…
Maybe we come from different backgrounds, but as far as I can see, the D3s beats the 1Dmk4 on more things than image noise – Read Galbraith for example.
well, for 400f/2.8 you wouldn’t be using neck strap.
At a $2300 premium?
Hopefully we will see a 50mm 1.4 mk II.
If Nikon releases a D700x it will have— 12mp! SHOCK and AWE! Oh wait, almost every Nikon has 12mp. Thats not competiting with the 5D2. Thats completing with the Canon Rebel!
LOL! Thats some funny A** stuff! LOL! Go waste someone elses time, actually on second thought. Keep it up! I haven’t laughed this hard in awhile! Idiots posting stuff about Nikons on a CANON site! IDIOCY AT ITS BEST!
yea cause i’d be hand holding it with a handstrap!
“There will be no 60D at this time.” No problem. I am waiting out a 7D MkII anyway…;-)while my 30D still does great.
I bet I lol’d at your response more that you did at mine. But no matter, Canon treasure customers like you. Blind to facts and defending their brand to death.
I am not trying to bash Canon here, on the contrary; Canon is significantly lacking in certain areas and I want them to improve. If you’re happy with where they are now, good for you.
Agree with that ! 9 cross-points with a few assist would be a great improvement but still below 7D. But my idea is that they are also waiting for the Digic V chip to put in the 60D. It will need that to handle a 18mpx at 6.3fps. Plus it may be improved for video features. And the longer they wait, the more 7D are sold!
I thinking about the 60D as the APS-C 5DII with the 7D corresponding to the APS-C 1D(s).
And the 1DIII test never appeared….
Dominating?
I highly believe the 1Ds4 is nothing more than 1D4 + FF@32MP.
While Canon probably will have better high ISO, I think it is still lacking shadow area cleanness. Dynamic range will probably the same on both. Just another camera, good for the existing EOS owners, nothing really exiting for the other camp.
650 ex speedlight w/ built in LED video light.. and please a 24-70 that dosent go wide when i aim it down..
+10
But you are bashing Canon! You’re ignorance and stupidity are getting hard to take.
I wouldn’t be driving my Ducati and constantly complaining that they are missing the mark because they don’t make my SUV! Thats just plain STUPID! That is really what you’re doing. NEWS FLASH… This just in, “Canon’s 1Ds Mark 4 is a studio camera!” LOL. You do realize this don’t you? Studios have those big bright things called LIGHTS! NOT much need for a sensor capable of shooting a crappy shot in near darkness with big studio lights. This camera is meant to compete with Medium format, which are almost all over 30mp, and cost far more than $8000. This is a professional camera designed for the working professional studio photographer! PERIOD!
If you want to take pictures like the papparazzi, in the pitch dark, just trying to get a noisy but usable image that will almost never leave a computer screen and NEVER printed larger than a single page print, then do us all a favor a get a Nikon. They already make your camera! Canon will release a lower MP camera sometime, but not next week. Mark my word, when Canon does release a low MP camera designed to compete with Nikon, it will be a no contest. I mean look at it. Canon isn’t even trying to make a camera that takes amazing pictures with incredibly high iso like Nikon, and they aren’t that far behind them in the noise quality.
Makes sense as they are not going to put a double processor on a xxd series and the digic IV may not be powerfull enough to move 18mpx pictures @ 6fps. The AF system improvement could make some nature photographers buy this as a back-up body; it is really hard to track a flying bird with the 40/50D. Also agree that releasing a 60D now could cut 7D sales as not every one needs weather sealing and 19 af points(tough these are really nice features)
I give up. I am stupid. You win :D
Well I am happy so long as it is smaller than the EF 70-200/2.8 IS – and I handhold that lens all day.
would a 24-70L 2.8 IS be better in resolving the 18mp sensor of the 7d? would make an awesome walkaround lens, along with a 14-24 2.8. or r they overkill for a crop body?
All is said, but not all is correct…
but probably not for travel…
Better than what? Any L lens is good enough.
Is anything correct?
“That lens will be too big and too heavy.”
Nope. EF-S version would not have that problem and neither would EF. And it would not be called “VR”…
Hey, don’t reveal it all, we need to guess ;-)
Yeah, not every one is a loud-mouth, wannabe, anonymous pro like you.
NOOOOOOO… Why isnt it 36mp. I WANT MOAR PIXELLLSSSSSSS
on a more serious note how well does resolution cover up for noise due to smaller pixel surface area?
eg if i take a 32mp shot, apply adequate noise reduction, sharpen, downsize it to 12mp, will it perform say as well as the D3s?
:D
Please,
– 12 MP FF DSLR
– extremely high ISOs (12800 portrait quality)
and:
– either very cheap with slow fps (500D-like),
– or expensive with high fps =)
That’s my wish =)
Lenses (my wish):
24-105 f/2.8 L IS
or
24-70 f/2.0 L IS =)
7D has it all.
14-24 2.8 would be big and very specialized. I guess not all who want it will be that satisfied.
I’d really love a sharp 17-40/4 II (or better, 17-50). Maybe with the 5DIII ??
50mm f/1.4 with ring USM.
IS on the 24-70mm would be nice, but I don’t think I’d spend the bucks to upgrade. The IQ is fine, but I use it as a people lens, so IS probably wouldn’t make it any more useful to me.
The IS models seem to have a 40-50% premium over the non-IS models.
The 70-200 IS / non-IS versions, both f2.8 and f4, vary by 20grams, so not that much heavier :)
No 60.
I guess I’ll just kill myself now.
But it was obvious though.. (=> could have killed myself earlier already)
you can buy a used 4M pixel Ixius to make those up missing pixels.
I just noticed that Vistek has 5D Mk III listed at this link: http://vistek.ca/marketing/procentre/canon/learningcentre/dslrlensmatch.aspx
it may be a typo or they just updated the site early in anticipation of the upgraded body.
The downsizing vs lower pixel count noise thing isn’t something you can give an over all definitive answer to. It depends on a lot of things, including the camera’s your comparing.
For instance I would argue the 5dII has better low noise performance at high iso’s then the d700 (as in better detail retention as well as noise) with a little bit of processing, although in all other measures (build quality, af, fps, responsiveness, etc) the d700 wipes the floor with it. A smiler argument could be made for the 7d vs d300 in terms of noise and detail performance.
but if you compared a 50d to a d90 I would say even when sampled down the 50d is still lagging.
It depends on the quality of both sensors, and how your measuring it. How ever, I would venture that if the 1ds IV has the same level of noise to pixel density as the 7d it will be very competitive indeed.
What the heck are you shooting that needs lower light capabilities than the 5DmkII. It can pretty much shoot in the dark. I us mine with the 85mm f1.2 and can shoot freehand at night in available light. What more do you want?
…with hybrid IS?!?
Given that the tables does not feature the 1D4, nor the 7D, nor the T2i, it must be a typo.
EF-s?
You ever tried printing a 3.7mp image full bleed?
while I’m fairly sure you’re joking (let’s hope), that’s a disturbing response to a camera rumor.
find something more important in your life than a camera
Not a new 24-70 i’ve just bought one :(
not so sure about that last statement. 7D is a birding/sports camera, where noise tends to be more forgiveable. 1D mark IV is the same target audience, and so its slightly higher noise compared to the D3s is also tolerable.
however, the 1Ds mark IV would be a studio/landscape camera … where you really don’t want to be forced to use noise reduction at low ISOs (which today means 400 and below). the 7D shows a fair bit of noise (not really a lot, but I do notice it in landscape shots) even down at ISO 100 (this also depends on lighting conditions). I would hope the 1Ds mark IV gives cleaner output
alright, I’m a big supporter of a useable number of MP (read: more than 12) but let’s stop using this outdated and nonsensical argument.
this argument does not take into account in any way the time-based relationship to sensor development. it’s not whether Contax’s ancient 6 MP is more or less noisy than Canon’s 21 or 32 MP sensor. it’s whether a Canon 32 MP sensor would be more or less noisy than a Canon 16 MP sensor.
at any rate, the answer to that should be obvious, the more important question is, how many pixels do you need? everyone has a different answer to that
They’re dev’s made that will never released for public usage.. this made me sad a few times.
23-24. Feb!
Lee from Irvine, CA
The only improvement will probably be IS for $500 so don’t be sad, you bought a very good lens!
considering you had to ask what a 1000D was in the first place …
looks like you an ign’ant one. go pick up a 1000D
I believe general’s point is that those are too totally contradictory statments.
“film-like” noise … that’s no problem, we’d all like to see that.
“no noise @ 100-1600 ISO” … how the heck is that “film-like”? that’s precisely more digital and more artificial
a major issue to me with DPreview is how little real shooting they do. their sample galleries are nice, but are almost always urban shots, or portraits. very little sports, very little landscape. their studio setup is, well, a studio setup, showing only near-focus ability.
I think canon will have learned from the blowback on that
a 14-24 f/2.8 would be very specialized … as in all landscape and architectural photographers would want it? those who want it would only not be satisfied if it wasn’t good optically.
a 17mm tilt-shift is pretty specialized, and we got that too, no reason not to make inroads in the premium ultra-ultra-wide segment
there’s a lot to commend for the Sig 30 f/1.4 … but a lot to dis-recommend as well. as is always the case with Sigmas, unfortunately
third that. and in general, all of the WA non-L primes need reworking. I know I sound like a broken record on this
Derek, welcome to the real (maybe) world … people just don’t know what cameras are really supposed to do and how they’re supposed to be used. yes high-ISO is useful. but I don’t know any professional photographer that picks up a 5D Mark II and says, I just can’t live with how this handles high ISO.
some people need to recalibrate their expectations, and learn to be better shooters (and maybe just need better lenses, if you’re shooting a variable aperture f/4-5.6 on a 5D Mark II and saying its high ISO doesn’t hold up, shame shame shame)
I vote this for most awkward CR conversation of the week
EF
For EF-S we already have 17-55 f/2 IS coming =) Or at least patent for it.
If the 1D4s is 32Mpixels – twice as many as the 1D4 at 16MP, then this is in area smaller than twice the 1D4 sensor area – so again smaller pixel size! This will make it hard to keep the high ISO and low noise performance. Maybe this SLR is only for well lit photo’s?
Adding IS to any L lens means that it will get a $500-600 premium. It will cost $1,800 to $1,900 dollars for a 24-70L IS, so just be happy with it because it will be a huge price premium over the non-IS version.
S o D was thrown off
interesting way to say Bull. gotta give him credit for originality
I’m kinda wishing they brought back the same sensor they had on the 5D (the first 5D that is). The way that thing shot portraits were amazing. The 5D2 was for landscapes, now they should have one for portraits.
i want canon buyback program lol.
trade my 5d2 for 1dS IV. HAHAHAH
I tested a pre-production 29 MP full frame eleven months ago on an assignment. All other camera features were 1Ds Mark III like. I have no idea if this was the 1Ds Mark IV. I IQ was similar to what you would expect from a 1Ds Mark III, but slightly (like 1/2 stop) better at ISO 1600. That camera did not go higher than ISO 1600. Was allowed to shoot jpg only.
Word! I was begining to think I was the only person who had little to no use for their samples.
Have one – love it. MILES sharper than the Canon 50 f 1.4, at least as fast to AF and better build.
But it focus’ close enough to be an “almost” macro.
+46426&63/
Copper surely. ;)
All your base are belong to us.
One very controversal proof sourse you posted there.
LOL I lurve Internet fights
So long as it has a direct print button…
It is too bad that Sigma doesn’t make gear for professional photographers.
I have the 50mm 1.4 and the “look” of the glass is nice but the build is sh!t. I have sent that lens back to sigma 2x in less than one year to have it fixed and it is still crap.
mr. spoiler your such a badass. :D
thirded!
second
that’s why Im saying 500/5.6… stop slower brings the cost down…frankly makes it travel friendly… the pros and those that need the extra stop can keep the 500/4… nice lens but not for me
Please, tell me. Why would Canon make a 1Ds Mark IV with max. ISO 1600? This would be a complete fail and couldn’t compete with any other Full Frame DSLR.
shut up Sid
perhaps because it was just a working prototype??? duh. not saying its true, but dang. dont be so critical.
thats fine… for a 500/5.6 L IS anyways… only option now is 6300 for a 500/4 so 2300 doesnt sound too bad
And on a studio camera we need as many as possible to work the best at iso 100 or preferebly even lower, and on high iso eg 400-800 we want the filmlook…
Actually, it works pretty good for a macro lens, even though it’s minimum focus distance isn’t the best and it won’t give a 1:1 image.
I would rather see a 24-105 f2.8L IS instead of a 24-70 f2.8L IS.
Although I have the 24-70 lens, I figure that they’ll just tack on another $500 for IS…
Agreed – why people are so enamored with IS for the 24-70 lens is beyond me.
Having IS would be better for telephoto lenses. 24-70 doesn’t require it, unless you’re shooting at really slow shutter speeds.
I figure it will be $2000, which isn’t worth it. I’m perfectly happy with the current lens.
Lulz.
chedd: yes. I wouldn’t even call that critical, I’d call it knee-jerk stupidity.
“why would canon make a 1Ds Mark IV with max. ISO 1600?”
why would canon make a 1Ds Mark IV that shoots only JPG?
Clearly, as Sid has stated, it was a “pre-production” (read: prototype) camera… so its not what’ll be released. some people get so excited about the opportunity to make others look silly, they just end up making themselves look silly
a 24-70 IS would be a premium walk-around lens for most. and, as a walkaround lens is mostly likely to be the one on the camera when you’re out in the evenings, IS would be very useful indeed.
if you’ve ever done studio shoots with modeling lights only I think you would appreciate the extra bit of stability the IS gives at 1/60 or 1/40 shutter speeds — yes, I know there will be subject movement. but only having subject movement is far better than having subject and camera movement.
very cool if that happens. someone mentioned a built-in mic on the speedlight unit as an idea, if you combined both that would be awesome
sounds about right
Oh please don’t stop, I’m personally enjoying this pissing contest! It’s like I never left the DPR forums! LULZ
Winning post of the thread. Headgears off to you Dohn Joe. LELZ.
Have you all read Nikon Rumors where they said “we are going to surprise the market”….
Canon sure will….
You do know that the 24-70/2.8 already weighs close to a kilogram right? You want it heavier and more expensive?
Because it would be effectively 112mm on a cropper, and that range would already benefit greatly from IS.
the other interesting aspect of the IS is to shoot video … at a focal length greater than 35, it’s difficult to remain steady while filming an interview. If the subject move, it’s ok without IS, but for someone sitting, you need tripod or IS. That’s the reason I use a lot my 17-55 IS despite the fact it’s not L. So the 24-70IS is a perfect filming lens ! that’s perhaps one of the reason why Canon launch it …
“In an interesting observation (thanks) it was pointed out that V3.8 of DPP has an image rotation tool that has a maximum input size of 6666×4444 pixels, which comes out at ~29MP”
from http://www.northlight-images.co.uk/cameras/Canon_1DS_MkIV.html
You’ll bet it has!! ;)
I’ve been telling all of you for months now, there will not be a 60D. Canon has already learned their lesson back in 2007, those in the prosumer/enthusiast market actually spent more $$$ to get the better features (40D vs. D300). If the 550D is too “amateurish” for you, then Canon would want you to pony up the extra shekels for a 7D (which is worth the price).
As for the lenses:
CR3 on the 24-70 IS means that would be the only L zoom announced this time. The other lenses would be: EF-S 30mm f/1.4 or f/1.8 (the so-called “niche” lens; I disagree with that label). The EF lens would be an L prime, most prolly a 35/1.4L Mk.II. I am hoping that the EF-S 17-55 f/2.0 or f/1.8 would also be coming out.
The new flash is the Speedlight 700EX (GN 70 at ASA 100, in meters). Zoom coverage from 17-200mm.
Come on, give us a hint!
I’m going to assume/guess/predict the niche lens might be a fisheye for the ef-s system.
Yes, I already know that. That’s why I bought a neoprene neck strap. :)
I wouldn’t upgrade my 24-70. I’m very happy with the pictures it takes.
It’s not BS. If you have a lighter body, lenses will weigh proportionately more. A heavier body will balance it out.
To me, a Holstein is a type of horse.
You think my intention was to make his comment look stupid? Well, you are wrong here. Perhaps it does sound a bit critical, but I didn’t want it to look like that.
…and their megapixel counts are being outdone by point and shoots…
With sensors 1/20th the size…
No, D700x would have 24.6mp.
D700s would have 12mp.
that would be ideal, yes. I think canon could pull it off
Yuo have no chance to survive make your time Noink.
Looks like somebody’s really confused. EF-S on a 24-70mm range and then VR? Rurz.
Lemem guess. 4K and RAW video. Nikon would surprise their fanboibase by making a 10th 12MP camera and video that finally reaches 1080i plus Live View that has greater than 15FPS refresh rate. Winnar.
it would show that canon means business, but I doubt it
Do tell us more Sid. Interesting anecdote. 29MP means it doesn’t share sensel size with any previous Canon sensor, innit?
What do they mean “One would be niche market and the other an EF mount lens” apart from TV lenses I thought Canon only made EF mount lenes.
It’s too bad if the EF-S lens would be a fisheye; there are other EF-S lenses that are much more needed, like a fast normal prime, or the f/2 or f/1.8 standard zoom.
The EOS-1Ds generally is one stop less sensitive than the EOS-1D of the same iteration.
canon should drop the XXD line. The 7D isn’t that expensive. And the 550D offers a lot, it just doesn’t have a magnesium body and scrollwheel.
Of course what was meant was a “niche market” EF-S lens.
Yes I agree, John, and the e-fs line already have a 10mm (10-22 zoom), very good lens,
better than a cheesy effect lens like a fish-eye, the fish-eye effect seems now old-fashion …. I filmed some very nice landscapes with the 10-22, just back from a remote lake in Thailand, so nice ! except some shots destroyed because of that f***** moiré …
EOS 5D Mark II? No.
Nikon D5000 you forgot.
I’m mainly assuming this because Canon has recently (or I think) thrown a curve ball on it’s recent released lens like the 2 new Ts-E, 24 1.4II, and 100 2.8 IS when others said there were other lenses that were much more needed.
I think people pay the couple hundred premium for the xxD line, in which even when they also wouldn’t utilize much of the faster fps (for action/sports) over the rebel series – mainly for the ergonomics. It feels better in their bigger hands (even with a rebel with battery grip attached).
Avade!
But you do your best Michal!
You’re nuts. If you don’t need the extra resolution, get a D3s!
The problem with a missing xxD is that stepping up from the 550D to the 7D is double the money, if not exactly, then at least in perception.
TS-E & MP-E are full-frame compatible, but not EF.
You would think that Canon would make an official press release that says the xxD series has ended. That would get folks off the fence, compare the T2i and the 7D and pull the trigger. Not saying anything about it makes me believe the 60D will appear.
If my 40D had the micro-focus feature, I’d be ok with waiting another generation. Where is the 40D firmware hack that adds it? That might force the 60D to be released. ;-)
Except for the fact that I don’t pretend, am not anonymous but yeah, you are right you brave, anonymous person you.
Hi
I have had the 500mm f/4 IS and the 400mm DO f/4, sold them because Like the size of the 400mm 5.6 or a 500mm 5.6 and with IS. In the beginning I was shooting with my Nikon 500 F/4 without VR with Velvia 50 ISO, so it no problem to shoot a lens at 5.6 with a digital camera with much higher ISO.
The old 400mm 5.6 could still be there but thoose who want there could be a razorsharp 400mm 5.6 IS and a 500mm 5.6 IS and they would be extremely popular. Still less expensive than the F/4 Lenses and could be hanhold.
Money is not the problem, give us the tool.
i think u all have to watch this!!

you may need a new computer for 32MP file.
ughh….EF-S lenses… and a new 35/1.4? Why are they ignoring lenses that need replacing and screwing with the stuff that works…. the 100/2.8 macro was/is ok… the new one is fine but @ 2x the price has it really made the system that much better? that said I could see them pulling a 10mm fisheye for ef-s…. nikon has one right? so canon must match them…ugh, so much for putting out something unique
lol…. that video has been spoofed so many times…. im in academia and there is a great version about the 3rd reviewer on peer reviews journal articles :D you know made a great scene when it can be subtitled to work for so many things ;)
they probably haven’t made the press release because the xxD series hasn’t died.
not having a D90 competitor in the middle of the consumer field is a huge hole in the lineup and canon certainly has a replacement to the 50D lined up.
others have already stated the reasons why canon is choosing not to release the 60D at this time. but it should be out no later than in 6 months time
The T2i is the D90 competitor…
Agreed, distribution and balance can be as significant as over all weight.
I think a Holstein is one of those black and white cows. But hey, I drink milk from the carton and that’s all I know about cows.
just killing time ’til the 23rd
Technically, 35/1.2L would not have been tagged as II, because the I version has different max. aperture. So only 35/1.2L. A little nitpick, I know :)
I’m in two minds as to whether Canon thinks it needs a D90 competitor (after all, what I think counts for nothing!)
Nikon certainly needs a body at the lower end of the market that has a built in AF screwdrive for legacy lenses. Obviously this does not concern Canon, but as many people have pointed out, there is quite a price difference between the 550D and the 7D.
The question they will face is can they get owners of previous XXD models to upgrade to the 7D? I don’t think that many of these will want to ‘downgrade’ to an XXXD with its plastic body, inferior AF system, slower framerate and smaller, dimmer viewfinder.
The danger from Canon’s point of view is that these people will simply hang on to their 20Ds, 30Ds, 40Ds or buy second hand 50Ds. After all, people used to hang on to their film cameras for years.
In some ways Canon’s biggest fear has always been themselves rather than other camera manufacturers -look at how carefully they ‘hobble’ certain models to protect others.
Not sure about you, but this is unprogressive thinking. If we have the capability of doing it, and it is feasible, why aren’t we doing it? Just because film cameras can’t do it, and it’s never done before doesn’t mean we shouldn’t do it. It does not demean your work or make you an ‘amateur’, it’s just an extra feature to have.
While this being said, I believe high ISO performance should not replace more needed improvements like autofocus.
If that is true then Nikon is the winner. D90 is a much better camera even if the T2i is a better camcorder.
I don’t think so.
Focal length only depends on the glass, not the sensor. 70 mm remains 70mm on a cropped sensor, you only get a smaller image which “looks like” 112mm, because it is cropped. So camera movement is the same as with FF, IS works the same. To tell is differently, without IS you’ll have more blurred images with a 112 on FF than with a 70 on 1,6 crop.
Statistically, what’s the % chance the above opinion/rumours are wrong ? c’mon, it’s not certain at all…Vegas odds would be long.
choosing the 7d over the T2i is not a matter of “ponying in a couple extra shekels” (whatever those are). it is practically TWICE the cost. paying more for a couple better features that don’t affect picture quality (better weather sealing and a larger, more comfortable body) should equate to around a 25-40% premium, not 100%!
the scroll wheel is everything in an event shoot. can’t do without it. i tried testing a xxxd line cam at an event and it was frustrating without the wheel and it’s too small and lightweight for a heavy L lens.
D90 is by now miles behind the T2i. except for the vf.
we’ew just missing that READY to RUUUUMMMMBBBBLE guy in the Tux
How bout’ improved ISO and better looking noise. Maybe like upwards of ISO 25600, you get minimal color noise and some luminance noise with no banding and not as much desaturation?
3rd
I’d be happy with a 200-400 or 200-500 to go with the 70-200.
+Big number
I’d need a new one for 21Mp.
Sad but it’s true, a step up from the 5d2 for the 1ds3 is nearly 100%+ just for a better weather sealing, ergonomics, and autofocus camera. I’m guessing those features are on the more pricier end of things.
Oh FFS
I’m a Canon shooter, but by NO stretch of the imagination is the D90 “miles behind the T2i”.
Frickin fanbois everywhere.
Oh please let it be a 14-24 2.8L, please let it be a 14-24 2.8L, please let it be a 14-24 2.8L…
I’m glad I made you laugh General knowitall.
You must love digital croma noise, I don’t like it at all which is why I would prefer no noise at all,
and if I want noise in a picture I can add it in PP.
But we all know Canon won’t do that.
So if I have to live with noise, I want it to be less digital and more film like.
I’m not saying not to shoot at high ISO. if the capability is there we should do it.
but for anybody to say that the 5D Mark II’s high ISO performance is not good enough … that’s a truckload of BS right there
Please let it be a 14-24 2.8L
I believe that’s what we all mean when we say “film-like” noise. I personally have no problem with noise of that quality in my shots (especially if we’re talking over ISO 6400), and I think the 7D and 1D Mark IV are almost there with their noise quality
Yeah, Canon have just been faffing about for the last 50 years.
canon is already getting a lot of xxD users to move to the 7D. a 60D would cater to the rest who don’t want to shell out quite as much, or for xxxD users wanting to move up. believe me, there’s space for the 60D and canon knows it, they’re just timing their releases
gotta update the random lenses sometime… I think the 100mm macro IS was really developed as a platform for them to test the new hybrid IS system, so there was more purpose than just “oh let’s make another 100mm macro”
Yeah, and lots of noise to go with it. =-) Full Frame is the best option. 5D2 firmware next month will change the game.
True, But I’m forced to get a camera with way more pixels than I need, while a lower Mp sensor with the same tech will have lower per pixel noise from the start.
I get your point that they are some what contradictory statments, but that is why I inserted a break to seperate the thoughts.
now if I had said:
I wish my camera had no noise, and i wish it looked more like film grain….
The banding is unforgivable, it’s the main reason for not getting the 5DII.
Yes it was an “engineering prototype”. Higher ISOs were disabled as it was a prototype. I was not allowed to shoot RAW. I used camera in studio.
Fine.
Screw the rumors. I bought a 7D yesterday :) Cheers all.
Makes me wonder if you know anything at all about photography.
It’s not that I love noise… there’s always going to be noise. It’s a little thing called physics… going to school helps with that sorta thing.
Sorry but that doesn’t make any sense. “Sensitivity” is given by the ISO. Are you saying that the 1Ds series has ISOs that are 1 stop less than the indicated ones, compared to 1D of the same generation?
Most anti-MP guys need to read this article:
http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/Insights/More-pixels-offsets-noise!/Real-life-comparisons
See how the normalised SNR is almost the same? Now factor in the additional resolution of the higher pixel sensor even at the same resolution because of smaller demosaicing artifacts. These findings are same with my own hands-on scientific tests conducted on the D3 and the 1Ds3.
But I’m not totally pro-MP. There’s only so much that even the top lenses (e.g. 180 macro, 200 2 IS, 300 2.8 IS and 400 2.8 IS) can resolve before hitting the diffraction limited aperture of the sensor.
If only “photographer” was a title given to people who’ve been to school…!
+1 for the 14-24 2.8L is it NEEDED, the APS-H sensor has no wide angle zoom option available from Canon. I’ll be upgrading to the Mark IV this summer but I do a ton of landscape and cityscapes in addition to sports.
I have the 24-70 & 70-200 and if the II versions of these lenses get great reviews, i’ll get the new versions of both. Add a 14-24 2.8L and you now have the “holy trinity” of zooms…
Agree… some guy with a blog did some excellent high IQ shots with the Leica S2 and when compared to what dpreview produced, you can’t even say it’s the same camera!
http://dfarkas.blogspot.com/2009/11/leica-s2-review-test-shooting-in.html
vs.
http://www.dpreview.com/galleries/reviewsamples/albums/leica-s2-beta-preview-samples
See what I mean? :D
The dpreview team’s photographers and technicians are both the armchair-kind. The technical tests are far from scientific because they don’t consider what people have been telling them not to do for years! It’s like their own little religion, and a funny one at that.
24-70 F2.8L IS? Unbelievable, I’m waiting for it almost 2years….
about 3 1/2 years here
Hopefully the one new niche market lens will be an updated MII TS-E 45mm f/2.8 or TS-E 90mm f/2.8!
0 years here
Yes, 14-24mm 2.8 and 24-70mm 2.8 IS please. Please Canon, please.
Coming next week…. Canon T3i
lots of noise compared to what?
Pro cameras is less than 1% of the total market, which mean that (even if Canon’s percentage is higher) more than 90% of the Canon bodies are EF-S crop cameras. That would hardly make an EF-S lens a niche market lens.
It’s no reason to believe that Canon would differentiate between EF and EF-S in this context. Speciality obviously mean non-dslr, and a CR2 rumors is extremely unlikely to be true anyway.
Maybe it stands for EF-Super and Very Reliable. New Canon lens tags :)
14-24mm f/2.8L
24-70mm f/2.8L
70-200mm f/2.8L
200-400mm f/4L
Wouldn’t that be the best zoom kit available for us Canon users heh. I hope that we will get a 200-400mm with constant aperture f/4 instead of f/5.6 at 400mm. It will ‘sort of’ replace the 100-400.
Personally, I agree with you but Canon seem to be playing a strange game. All the ‘previews’ that I’ve seen in the press (both online and print media) seem to be spouting Canon’s official line that the 550D is meant to bridge the gap between the entry level models and the ‘enthusiast’ level models. I think that Canon are trying to convince themselves that they can do without a 50D replacement.
I my opinion this is flawed reasoning of the type that saw them not producing a D300 competitor for two years. Apart from the new ‘standard EOS features’ -18MP sensor and iFCL meter, the new 550D is inferior to the 50D in every way.
I predict that Canon will try to hold of making a 60D and palm customers off into the 550D or 7D camps, until they finally bow to pressure and make a 60D at either the end of 2010 or early 2011. Of course I could be wrong, they could be bringing it out next week -or at Photokina. But hey, where’s the fun if you’re not willing to put your neck on the line and make your prediction in writing!!!
‘more than 90% of the Canon bodies are EF-S crop cameras. That would hardly make an EF-S lens a niche market lens’
+100
But you would hardly think it given the way that Canon acts, where the hell is our EF-S 30mm prime? And how about an EF-S 50-150mm f/2.8? (Oh sorry, they couldn’t possibly do that -all the pros might suddenly switch to crop bodies).
If this is true then the 1DsIV is early & the 60D is late. 1DIVs are just now shipping in any measurable quantity. Maybe they’ll announce it now & ship it for real in April/May.
If the 60D is indeed coming later, then maybe they’ll do something special:
– 17 May marks 10 years of in-house Canon DSLRs, & 10 years of XXD series cameras in particular. There are already plenty of other horses in the stable, & the 7D specifically allowed them to push the 60D release back a bit.
– This would be a longer than normal release schedule. 50D saw the first Digic IV, maybe 60D will get Digic V (but more likely it’s for the fall or next spring).
– XXD shooters expect a 6fps camera. Single Digic IV can’t handle 6fps @18mp & dual Digic IV would push the price up too much & put it too close to the 7D.
– There are already two 18mp cameras in the lineup. I don’t think 6fps & better handling would differentiate the 60D enough.
– The G11 had 5 less mp than the G10, and was touted as the low-light compact.
How sweet would it be if the 60D was basically a 6fps 12mp 7D, marketed as a low-light camera? That would basically beat the D300s at its own game for several hundred bucks cheaper.
Lenses: 24-70 IS and 60mm EF-s macro.
The 24-70 range needs IS, you bet. The 17-55/2.8 IS for the crop cameras is a fantastic tool if you’re doing indoor, low light work. I used it all the time while the 24-70/2.8 sat at home. Can’t handhold the Brick at 1/40th, while the IS lens works great. And when you’re working with a high-resolution sensor like the 5D Mark II, any camera movement is magnified, like looking at blur under a high-power microscope.
IS won’t necessary add a lot of weight to the lens. It will add to the price. I’ll buy one anyway: it’s one of the things keeping me from jumping over to Nikon for the better-focusing full-frame low light monsters they’ve got.
A walk on the beach.
That’s what the direct print button does?
Yep, nikon lenses sure work real good with Canon bodies. :P
1 1/2 year here.
It would make my choice of lenses easy indeed.
These 3 lenses would cover everything (for me that is).
Do you mean screw the rumours of a 60D? About to get myself a 7D. Any regrets?!
LOL. I’d like a snooze button as well :)
+1, I’m very greatfull for the IS on my 17-55/2.8. At weddings for instance it comes in very handy in dark churches.
You could always make do with a 5DMkII and 16-35 lens or even a 7D and 10-22 EF-S lens. The Nikon 14-24 doesn’t take front-mounted filters and there’s no reason to believe that the Canon version would either. If you need a graduated ND filter, that presents a problem.
Surely the amount of blur is dependant upon the angle moved through whilst the shutter is open as a proportion of the angle of view through the lens? Thus at a given shutter speed, whilst the lens will physically move through the same angle whether it is mounted on a full-frame or a crop body, this will be greater in proportion to the smaller angle of view on the crop sensor and thuerefore produce a greater amount of blur.
Sorry, I’ll have to leave it to someone else to demonstrate this mathematically.
What a joke.
What you say?
You’re naturally a jerk then?
Oh my! You’re right! :o
28 seconds.
Sure when next month they lower the value of the 7d by 100-200 bucks! BAM
Or just get and use a 14-24 and whip out the 17-40 when you need to mount the ND.
the biggest use for High ISO for me is nighttime surveillance in a law enforcement application. I use a 7D with 85 1.2 to shoot through dark tint in a low light parking lot.
I’d take a 200-400 or 200-500 5.6. The f4 would make it super expensive and out of a lot of folks league compared to the 100-400. Nikon’s equivalent is nearly 6grand.
-1 year here. completely uninterested.
1-2mm F0.2L IS DO USM.. waiting for it for 65 years…we need a hyper-ultra wide angle with 1600 stops IS and the depth of field the size of a dust mite.
also waiting for the 24-18,000 F0.95L DO USM IS, again, a perfect walkaround lens. hopefully canon keeps it to under 6tons. a complementary crane would be great though.
I too think the price on the 7D will drop to around 1499 by the summer.
Waiting about 3 years.
Yes, but it would be very incredible to have the option to own a 200-400 f/4 for the canon mount. I mean think about it. It would ostensibly replace the 100-400, the 300 f/4, and replace the only f/4 400 lens, the DO lens. Retail on those three right now rings up as: $8688 on amazon.
I know it’s not really the right way to think about it, but there are real advantages too including carrying only one lens.
So long as they all had IS.
Yeah, and don’t forget the 199 MP FF camera with infailable AF, underwaterproof, 24 fps (either still? or HD video), build like a tank, light as a feather.
Build in top photography intelligence would be nice to and speach recognition, so I won’t have to get up and just tell the camera to make the perfect picture for me.
Of course life time warrenty from canon, so with the first bad shot you will get a refund.
4 wheel drive is great in rough terrain, but please make it a solar powered camera, so the Al Gore’s arround us are satisfied too.
By the way, not too expensive. I’m thinking around 500,- US will be enough, including the two kit lenses described by Wen. I’m sure that won’t be a problem and Canon will have a winner.
Agree, 60D will like to see at least 16mp like the 1Dmk4, digiv V is gonna be a must to handle 6.3fps and at least 12 AF points and if is going to be on the 1300 dollars price range it better have at least the infrared remote thing and ISO up to 12800. ( now the question is gonna be am i willing to pay 1300 for that when i can just get 300 more and go for the weather sealed 19 af points 7D …thats a big debate for canon as lot os us will probably rather buy the 7D since the rebels has gone way up into the battle I dont thing there’s gonna be much room left for the XXD series cameras ( maybe just one slot left ) ..my opinion !
But 70-200mm 2.8L already has IS.
Of course, but it was a conditional response to a hypothetical question. The key word is “all.” I was answering the question: “Wouldn’t that be the best zoom kit available for us Canon users heh”? with the response: “So long as they all had IS.”
Therefore it would be the best in my opinion so long as ALL those models had IS, not just one or two. ALL.
That is all.
He said his undies are a bit tight today.
price is not the main deterent to the 7D. Size/wt. are not attractive.
IS on a 14-24mm f/2.8? Is this for people who take photographs at night without a flash while operating a pneumatic jackhammer and being chased by a hungry herd of jack russels?
It will be exactly the same at the pixel level on the sensor.
surely that would be a pack of Jack Russels?
There’s a difference?
I agree IS would not be a must have on a 14-24, i’ve never done any serious landscape work w/o my tripod. In addition, a 14-24 2.8 will be a seriously large lens to deal with hand held and IS will make it a 1500-2K lens, still worth it IMO but I don’t generally hand hold my landscape and cityscape shots so i’m indifferent on IS. If anyone has shot w/the 24-70 then you know it’s a big boy, IS would be a nice plus on that lens although i’ve done just fine without it for the last 2 yrs, just gotta keep that SS up or make a speedlite your best friend as I do.
BTW a more powerful speedlite has me drooling nothing wrong w/my 580 but I have no problem making it a slave to a more powerful 600 series speedlite. It’s good times for Canon shooters right now…
I don’t think it’d replace many prosumer’s arsenals being nearly 6 grand. Many carry around one, some or all of the following 3 – most would exclude the 400 f4 DO:
100-400 used craigslist $1000-1200
300 f4 used craigslist $900-1100
400 5.6 used craigslist $900-1100
Total $3000-3500 roughly for those three for nearly half the price of a potential all in 1 even with the capabilities of f4 at 400 doesn’t seem to justify the 2-6x cost for many pro-sumers.
I’m assuming many prosumers are hoping for a versatile telephoto zoom that is optically sharp on the furthest focal length 400-500 with a faster or comparable AF (to the 300f4 and 400 5.6 prime) than the current 100-400 for under 2 grand.
Yes of course if you got and make the bank it would be nice for a 200-400 f4 like nikon.
-2 year here, would rather it be a 14-24 and the other lens in the telephoto range!
this is fantastic: the new 24-70!! Wow!!
John is right. if the camera moves 0.01mm. this will be 0.0417% of the height of a FF sensor. However, it will be 0.0667%. of the height of copped sensor. Now you can see that the movement will be more serious. So the IS will help on a copped sensor. That is why canon is putting IS even on the cheap 18-55mm kit lens.
I still don’t think so. If the camera moves 0.01 mm, that’s two pixels whatever the size of the sensor (at equivalent pixel density, of course). So the blur will be exactly the same : two pixels.
meh. an $8000 dslr, and a $2000 24-70L (to go with the $3000 70-200MkII)?
great news for pros, but this is much less exciting when one realizes that these products will not mean much of anything for most of us.
put real USM in the 50mm 1.4 and fix its formula wide open. that would be exciting.
Yes both cases will be blurred by two pixel. But in terms of percentage, the same two pixel will be a higher percentage of the height of a copped censor than a FF sensor. So the blurring will be 0.01067 in on a 16 X 24 print from a copped sensor and 0.00667 in on a 16 X 24 print from a FF. So the blurring will be more obvious on a copped sensor print.
I’m aware that the breed of cow commonly used for dairy production is called the Holstein (or Holstein-Friesian).
However, there is also a breed of horse called the Holstein (or Holsteiner).
Ha ha, I’m waiting as well for Tuesday. We’ll see what it brings.
The beach has roaring waves.
I need a new one regardless – mine’s overloaded.
You mean the Leica S3?
No, it won’t. Crop the blurred image taken on the FF to the size of the cropped sensor one, and you’ll get exactly the same blur and same feeling.
SX30 IS with 14.1mp? With noise at ISO 80?
Um, maybe he’s just s loyal Yankee who doesn’t deal with Europeans?
Now you are turning the FF into a cropped sensor. Of cause they are the same. But our discussion started as FF vs crop. You have just turned the discussion around. we should end it right here. I do not want to waste any more time.
An Israeli? Shalom chaver!
I’m going to have to sue you for medical expenses, considering that I’m having a hard time breathing from laughter…
I haven’t turned anything around. I just say that the blur is ONLY related to the amplifying factor of the glass, and has nothing to do with the sensor size. If you think differently, you should just go back to college and study your physics, your math, and your optics. I don’t even know why I am losing such time with ignorants like you.
If you are doing a full print(no cropping) from both the cropped sensor and a FF. The 75mm lens will have a equivalent focal length of 120mm on a cropped sensor.. Now you crop your FF to be the same size as a crop sensor. you are effectively turn the 75mm into a 120mm. Your 2 pixel will become a bigger percentage of the final picture height and hen the blur will be more obvious Sounds like you need to go back to high school ( assume you are a high school graduate)to relearn your basic math. You are not even qualify to talk about physics or optics.
No. You are just wrong. Repeating the same wrong thing again and again won’t make it a truth.
Let’s try this : suppose you have a FF camera, and you put a cache between the glass and the sensor that crops the image to APS-C. Would the blur be different than without this cache ?
Of course not…
So, please stop this nonsense.
I have never disagree with you about the same amount (2 pixel) of blurring. However you still cannot understand the effect (percentage) of blurring from 2 pixel between the FF and cropped sensor. That you really become a problem. If you still cannot understand it. I am not going to explain again.
Based on what camera? The T1i was based on the 50D, the T2i on the 7D – what is there to base the T3i on?
the past announcement(s) was less exciting (t2i, 2 ef-s zoom lens instead of L prime/zooms) its the prosumer-pros turn!
I think it would be better to keep making EF primes. Very little savings can be made if they made it EF-S. Maximum compatibility should be must for primes.
Please hurry up Canon.
I want the 50mm 1.4 or it’s going to be off to see Mr Sigma.
Cheers,
Richard B.
The 5D MKII ?
No 5D MKIII yet?
I really hope they will announce the 1Ds mark iv tomorrow. I am looking to buy either the Canon 1ds mark iii or the nikon D3x …. but i still cant quite decide which to go for. Nikon has higher mp count . higher noise and doesnt offer f1.2 lenses. Canon has 21Mp , so a bit lower… less noise at higher ISOs but has some AF problem in sunny areas..
……
Hopefully the 1ds4 will fix the AF issue. any one got any idea how bad this issue is supposed to be?
(ps its funny how the people here are complaining about canons faults saying how nikon is better. The same is happening in Nikon forums where they say canon is better :D )
Even though it doesn’t seem too promising, many of us are still hoping there is a 60D–and soon. I for one have been saving/planning to buy a new camera and lens sometime this spring or summer. The 7D looks great but is probably more camera than I need and definitely more than my budget plans. The T2i looks really good but I want to move up from the Rebel series and get better AF, FPS, handling etc. My plan has been a 60D and 17-55. Without the 60D, Canon will not be getting all of my money at this time. Unless they announce (unlikely) that the XXD line is over, I will continue to wait.
I second that.
Oh yes, for instance you would have a band of Canon users but a herd of Nikon users :-)
Alright, this is what I came up with:
1Ds was announced 12 months after 1D
1Ds Mark II was announced 7 months after 1D Mark II
1Ds Mark III was announced 6 months after 1D Mark III
So 1Ds Mark IV “should” be announced less than 5 months after 1D Mark IV. That is February or March.
About megapixels.
1Ds has 11 megapixels
1Ds Mark II has 16 megapixels = 5MP more
1Ds Mark III has 21 megapixels = 5MP more
1Ds Mark IV “should” have 25 megapixels = 5MP more. But it’ll probably be 25MP-29MP since D3x and Sony have 24MP and 1MP is really not such a difference.
I’m looking forward more to seeing a 60D/600D combo where the low-light performance is pushed up by one stop over the 7D. It’s inevitable: Nikon’s upped their QE by 1-1.5 stops with the D3S and the technology will trickle-down to their APS-Cs sooner or later.
its going to be 32mp, 7mp more than nikon d3x. the question is what the fps going to be. 5 would be very nice, would be enough for me to use for sports aswell for landscapes.
yes we need proper upgrade to 40D. for me will be perfectly ok if its 550D in 50D body, i got bigger hands and ‘feel’ of the camera is very important to me.
Well I think it’s going to be 29-32MP.
About fps:
Every new 1Ds was exactly 1 fps faster. If the Mark IV gets a Dual V processor, maybe it could work at 5.5-6fps with 29MP-32MP. I don’t design processors so I don’t know how powerful they can, and can’t be. I just talk about what I think ;)
The 5D Mark II has a different kind of sensor…
This is why I love reading comments on this site :) I know that I’m going to laugh a lot when a new post is published. Thanks to everyone that has made me laugh, especially the two of you above.
Shekels (or sheqels) are the Israeli currency.
The only proper update for you is already there and is called 7D.
Why bother with a 60D that is crippled in all ways….
The 1-2 more day wait is brutal!
The 60D *should* be announced 18 months after the 50D.
That is February or March.
-_-
have to agree on that! any more info about the 1ds4 ?? aren’t there more rumours usually before an announcement?
I have had a 350D for fouy years. I wanted to upgrade to the XXD line about 12 months’ ago but resisted because I wanted HD video. The 7Dis great but its more camera than I need. The 550D has great specs but I want to upgrade from the XXXD line. If the 60D don’t come soon then I’ll be spending the cash I’ve saved with someone else.
same here!
I’m still on my 300D! (you guys still remember that??)
Finally ready to move to XXD too. I don’t know what to get if there isn’t a 50D replacement… I need something with better low light. I’m sick of getting muddy pics at 800iso.
I agree…where are the blurry pictures of the new camera…the pictures of the camera box in a foreign language?
That slowly help you sleep.
I say you don’t know this meme.
But there’s noise. Just saying.
Do what I did then: get a used 40D.
So how many 1Ds Mark III owners will be buying a $8000US 1Ds Mark IV right away? Count me in.
If you go over to Nikon Rumors they are throwing toys out of their pram because their prediction for 2 new dSLRs did not materialise so they start attacking Canon saying DXO chart shows D3s wipe floor with 1DMk4. I mean who really takes notice of DXO when 2 very different sensor size are compared, and how come most medium format cameras don’t do as well as the more top end dSLRs when MF cameras has superior IQ.
Is is invaluable for handheld low light.
Most will learn from their costly mistake and wait for the 5D Mark III come next July or September
take it easy champ, they are only saying everything based on the DxO result. Calm and we should be fine.
I want an ST-E3 with a second hotshoe on top of the flash controller so that I can use the ST-E3 without losing the hotshoe!
Yup, 5D Mark III with crappy AF…
There is no DiG!C V. Stop waiting.
Maybe next generation. But considering that Canon’s still putting DiG!C III’s in some compacts, I’m worried.
Get a 7D, Yo.
Waiting only for 5D III.
Agree…..
What happened to “tons of info this weekend”?
Weekend about over for east coasters.
MAkes me wonder what is coming Tuesday. Anything?
I think this rumors post is probably up there in the amount of overall replies accumulated. Good stuff!
5DIII in July or September 2010? No way. Perhaps September 2011 with availability in December 2011. With crappy AF and slow fps. Sensor is not everything.
Yea, what happened to info over the weekend?
The 1DsIV is coming Tuesday though. No 60D, try a 9D with consensus 60D specs.
There is a release tomorrow and there is no more information available. Either there is no release tomorrow or availabilty will be few months.
Can someone please tell me what Camera this is? The lens is a Zeiss prototype that was announced last week. Is this the IDs M4 or something new by Canon? The new Zeiss is made to cover an entire FF camera. Thoughts anyone?
http://matthewduclos.files.wordpress.com/2010/02/zeiss-cp-2-prototype-lens.jpg
cheers
That’s an old film body – you can tell by the release latch on the side (to release the back to load film). A Canon 1 series, it looks like.
David, Thanks. Wishful thinking on my part.
someone set us up the bomb. that’s what he say.
Hahahahaha
OT: Have you all seen how the Noink & Sonny fanbois are crying because all they would be getting for PMA would be ugly mock-ups and rehashed press releases instead of real cameras. LULZ. We’re still very fortunate to have bet on the Canon horse, at least we get new bodies & lenses at least twice a year.
The Noinks are still waiting for a >12MP camera that costs less than $8000. Hohoho.
And the Sonnybois are crying because the 3yr. old A700 successor got pushed back again because of the power of the awesome 7D. Hahaha.
Hey, it’s already halfway past Monday and still no CR3 rumors? So nothing happened over the weekend? I guess we should be grateful we won’t merely be getting some butt-ugly mockups like the Sony guys or a rehashed press release about already-announced bodies like the Noinks… :P
As soon as one puts something in the box, there is no way to hold leaks. On the other hand, with the web announcement first they can hold leaks to the very last minute. I think all the latest higher grade Canons had availability quite after the announcement.
I need some more juicy rumors!
Maybe the 1ds4 isnt being released after all???
Its more of an angle thing in my opinion…
If you move 1 degree on a wide angle lens 1 degree of 120 degrees or whatever the lens does is very little, but will still blur a bit, like a dot that was iluminating one pixel might shift like a couple pixels.
But if you are shooting on a 800mm where the angle of view is like 5 degrees, and you shift 1 degree, you will get a 20% shifts on the sensor, turning out on a crap image.
Oh man.. one day left.
I´m waiting for a great 1Ds Mark IV for months.
Almost changed to MF, but a 1Ds is far more handy.
cheers..
Don’t worry. The announcement tomorrow at 4.00 GMT. For SURE. 32 Mpixel.
Personally, I think our “niche market” lens in the article is the 60mm EF-s IS macro.
I’d get one.
A full-frame retrofocus 35mm f/1.2L would probably cost over 2 grand and weigh at least a kilo.
I think I’d rather have a 35 f/1.4L IS :-). If you want ultra-narrow DoF then 35mm is not your focal length anyway.
Spoiler Says:
“All is said,”
60D
“but not all is correct…”
There will be no 60D at this time.
??????
30 secs here :-D hehehe
That should mean in 1:15 hrs then, shouldn’t it?
That’s 6PM Eastern tomorrow, 2/23, if Tranchillo is right.
Then i have to wait for the 24th.
Of course. But pro models don’t have a built-in flash.
I want the EOS-1D Mark IV…
And what new did we get?
From memory of Canon lenses timeline charts, it takes Canon 10-20 years to release a new version of a lens.
I’ve heard a claim that the 70-200mm f/2.8 IS mkII was released now in response to Nikon. Yet, the mkI was almost 10 years old, and some of the new features (e.g. improved Image Stabalizer) were around for a long time.
Nikon’s 14-24mm is better than not only Canon’s 16-35mm mkII, but Canon’s 14mm mkII *prime*, released only a year earlier.
This comes with Sigma’s 2004 release of the 12-24mm zoom.
Those three data items together make me think Canon wouldn’t release a new ultra-zoom before 2014, which is why I put my money on a 2nd hand Sigma 12-24mm.
Dude, so where is it, and just how reliable is that source?
I want mine NOW!!!
I’m totally hooked on Sonny with a chance, Nico is my favorite on the show! Thanks for posting this, I enjoyed reading it!
