What’s Next from Canon?

Canon has had a busy last couple of months with the announcements of the Cinema EOS C50, EOS R6 Mark III and RF 45mm f/1.2 STM. The latter being extremely popular going by the pre-order numbers that we have seen.

Prior to the announcement of the EOS R6 Mark III, there were other “embargoed” dates told to us, and I believe the one for the end of November was the official shipping date for the EOS R6 Mark III. I hadn’t thought of that possibility at the time. So, there will be no lens announcements this week.

New Lenses?

I know at least two new lenses are going to be announced in the near future, though I don’t know the exact time window when we can except news.

We know that the RF 20-50mm f/4 PZ for full-frame cameras will be coming. I think such a lens is aimed at the EOS R6 Mark III and Cinema EOS C50 shooters, though it’ll be great on the EOS R5 Mark II as well.

Could it come in December? It’s possible as Canon has done December announcements in the past.

The second lens is the long-rumored RF 300-600 “affordable” supertelephoto lens. We know the lens has been tested in numerous places around the globe for everything from wildlife to surfing, but again. I don’t know exactly when.

The RF 45mm f/1.2 STM is one of the four new lenses, and we’re a bit surprised the RF 20-50mm f/4 PZ wasn’t announced alongside it with the C50s imminent shipping.

In the end, there will not be four new lenses announced this month, just the RF 45mm f/1.2 STM. Lens announcements are always tougher to nail down than camera bodies. I don’t like it, but I can’t change it.

New Cameras?

The Canon EOS R7 Mark II is expected to be the next EOS R camera from Canon. I don’t think it’s coming “soon” and is more likely to be a camera that is announced closer to or shortly after the CP+ show in Yokohama that will begin on February 26, 2026. I think Richard and I are going to be there if things go to plan.

I also think that the EOS R8 will be getting a Mark II version in the first half of 2026, but I don’t have any direct knowledge of that, just a hunch.

Outside of that, I have heard nothing about any other EOS R camera. Though there have been some mentions of a new Cinema EOS camera above the Cinema EOS C400, which shouldn’t come as much of a surprise.

What about PowerShot?

There are more coming, and at a point I was told that we’d see a new “V” model before the end of 2025, but I think that was more of a wish than an actual product.

With Canon re-starting production of the PowerShot G7 X Mark III and PowerShot SX740 HS, along with announcing the PowerShot ELPH 360 HS A, for the moment it appears Canon is just putting products out to meet a growing demand and likely getting a better idea of what the demand growth will look like.

Cameras take some time to design, test and manufacture, so I wouldn’t expect a new PowerShot camera soon. I hope my expectations are wrong.

More to come

I hope to hear more over the next month or so. This time of year, is usually quiet on the rumor side of things unless something is coming very soon.

  1. Is there any additional news on the 24-70 VCM?
I’m close to biting the bullet on the current version but I would surely be happy if they can release a lighter, sharper version like the other manufacturers did

  2. 20-50mm? Sounds too good to be true
Not at all. The name of that lens was leaked about two months ago, together with the 45mm, on a survey from Canon. The user shared screenshots here in this forum.

    It’s a power zoom non-L lens, so I wouldn’t expect much.

I really wish Canon would copy the Sony 20-70mm f/4. It's probably the lens I miss most since migrating from Sony to Canon.

  4. A 20-50 f/4 seems like an answer to a question nobody is asking. Why not just buy the 14-35 f/4L instead?

Then again, I'm waiting for my 45 f/1.2 to be shipped so there's that.

  5. I want:
    - compact fullframe camera, optimized for photo, not video
    - quality non-L 28/1.8 or 1.4 with something better than current STM
    - still a proper non-L 50/1.4 with something better than current STM (ok, anything between 45-55mm, I don't care)
    - new 28-70/2 which is much lighter and not nose-heavy. I could live with 28-55/2 and non-L, but NO STM thank you very much

  6. Overall, a relatively quiet year from Canon (for me). I did not purchase a single lens although I might swap my RF 85 mm f1.2 L for the 85 mm f1.4 VCM L. I will wait until my local dealer has promotions in the spring of 2026. Still waiting on the RF 300-600 mm lens and will also be interested if Canon updates the RF 400 mm f2.8 L to a design with a built in TC and / or lighter weight.

  7. What about an R10 replacement? In the DSLR days these cameras were on a faster cadence than the single digit cameras. Is this the type of thing no one rumors about and they just appear?

I already own the 15-35 f/2,8. But sometimes (often?) when visiting cities, I miss the 50mm focal length, especially when using the 70-200 and, for architecture, the 17 TS.
Saying the "nobody is asking" for a 20-50 is establishing your opinion as a valid rule. And this is what nobody is asking for!

I know, but so many lenses have been "leaked" without appearing... 😉

  10. I still hope canon comes with a good zoom compact camera especially for photographers, with an evf and a big sensor and low aperture and raw mode and al the new things that other camera's also have.

    Like a new gx5 of v3

  11. I also think that the EOS R8 will be getting a Mark II version in the first half of 2026

So will the RP just be kept on indefinitely or would the original R8 take its place as the full frame budget option?

  12. RF 20-50 PZ would be close to the EF-S 15-60 f/4 IS I always wanted for APS-C where it has 32-80mm which is good for wider video angles - especially for R50 V with the PZ treatment.
For FF it would be - if compact - a great emergency (not really) ultrawide lens which goes to the standard focal length.
But for me only interesting if it has good to very good IQ without digital corrections.

What would that look like? R6III sensor, no RAW video and without IBIS and same small battery as the R8? Sounds like an interesting camera.

Probably Canon doesn't feel like they can improve the R10 significantly and i don't see it either. Back in DSLR days it was much easier to improve things like AF or bump the resolution with extra 2 MP.

  15. Repackaging the EF 135mm f/2 as a budget-friendly RF alternative to the 135mm f/1.8 would be the best way to compensate users for the locked bayonet. There is considerable pricing flexibility, especially since the RF L variant costs a whopping €2599.

Why not just buy the 14-35 f/4L instead? Maybe because it's not a power zoom, stops at 35mm and will cost probably 3 times as much?
