When Will Canon Officially Stop Servicing Your Cameras and Lenses?

Canon Japan recently updated their schedule for the end of official service life for Canon cameras and lenses. This is great information to know, especially for those looking to buy older gear on the used camera market. There are still a lot of EF shooters out there, and this information may influence your buying decisions.

These dates are when Canon can no longer guarantee parts availability and will not accept repair requests at Canon's own service centers. Official third-party repair centers may still be able to buy parts and will be able to repair the product for you. There will also always be unofficial third-party repair options out there.

If you don't see your camera or lens on the lists below, it means official service life has ended.

You will see one of “TBA”, “To be determined” and “undecided” listed beside products on this list. We haven't figured out any sort of correlation between those descriptions to know what could possibly be added to the lists next.

It is generally safe to assume that higher-end gear (eg, L lenses) added next will be serviceable until 2029 and beyond.

Conclusion

Third party repair options will not be as abundant for cameras. Supply for parts like shutter assemblies and image sensors will become scarce far quicker than parts for lenses. If I was buying a used DSLR today, I would be looking at the higher-end of the DSLR ladder, cameras like 1-series and 5-series cameras will be workhorses for years to come.

Someone on earth can always fix whatever lens, it all comes down to how much you're willing to spend. Up until a few years ago, there was a service center in Michigan, USA that could rebuild focus motors for both the EF 50mm f/1.0L USM and EF 200mm f/1.8L USM. It wasn't cheap and it wasn't quick.

Keep shooting!

  1. The only Canon EF lens I still even own is the 100 L macro, which isn't on the list. They're still sold new so I assume they're still serviceable. They are also widely available used at a price that would probably be less than any repair costs. The same could probably be said of most EF lenses at this point except the big whites.
  2. I was also really thinking about looking for a 500mm F4 but when I was searching a couple weeks ago I saw that in 2029 the service for it will end. That was the point to not spend 5k Euro plus 1.4 extender for something have the risk not able to repair in 3 years. The gamble at this prices are not worth the risk. I’m pretty sure it will be the same for many other try to look for a big prime lense. Sadly no RF version of the 500 is on Horizont. I think it’s the perfect sweet spot between size and reach of the 400 and 600mm
  3. This list surely must be a joke. There are no cameras like the 2000D / Rebel T7 on it so they are no longer supported, but the end of support of the EF-S18-55 3.5-5.6 IS II and similar lenses still undecided. Does Canon think that I will use a lens like that on R5 or R10? Or they just created such a huge amount of these lenses that their support will never end? If the lenses are supported why the cameras they are designed to use with are not?
I'd prefer to see an updated version of the 2000D with a newer sensor, let's say Digic 7 and a bit more focus points (maybe 25 or 30) than an R5 mark IV or whatever as I don't really need the capabilities of the mirrorless cameras and some of the (telephoto) lenses are just too dark.
  4. C300 mk2 is no longer serviceable ? big problem since the SDI and HDMI ports are directly mounted and driven from circuitry on the camera's main board. its like a $1200-$1400 repair when I had it done about 2 years ago when the HDMI port quit working. Maybe its a call and see if they have parts for the problem situation. I had no problem with service and they turned it around quickly only being with them a few days.

C300 mk3 for 2030 is interesting. Its one of the best C series they've made so only another 4 years of known service isn't great. I guess it will be a we'll see situation.

A high-density AF array would require an LCD focusing screen overlay; too much investment for the target market.
What's wrong with the 850D; aren't they cheap enough by now?

EF500 4.0L IS II USM lens hood has been unavailable for several years now, and apparently no longer produced (according to Canon UK and US). That is quite sad, as it is the most easily breaking part of the product (even if it is not part of the actual lens). I wish the support promise would also cover spare parts like that.

Interesting, I didn't know that was still possible so recently. What happened to that business?
  8. It's pretty amazing how long vintage (or so-called vintage) gear works when cared for, so definitely interesting for commercial needs but shouldn't deter collection or hobby purchases when done eyes wide open. I have stuff like the original 70-200 f/4 — it works robustly, and it even still produces competitive images compared to more modern options when DLO is applied. And I still bring nostalgic gear like the 20mm f/2.8 USM along for certain trips as it continues to shine well enough when used intelligently in the real world.

Perhaps you can 3D print one of your own? I find that works well, when needed. If you don't have access to such you might consider a service with options such as this:

Note: I have not used them, but I with some homework / calls you might be able to assure yourself of the product. After all, it's a static piece.
