June is the month
Received information from various places that Canon will announce 2 new cameras in June (not including PowerShot updates).
One camera will be an EOS (650D) and the other will be a mirrorless entry.
I’m sure we’re going to start seeing more information in the coming weeks. I also expect Canon to spend a bit of marketing dollars on a mirrorless camera. Maybe we’ll see some teasers.

From Canon USA
To Users of the EF200mm f/2L IS USM and EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM Lenses with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera.
Thank you for using Canon products.
We have confirmed that when the EF200mm f/2L IS USM and some units of the EF800mm f/5.6L IS USM lenses are used with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera, the Lenses may emit an abnormal noise.
The Canon EOS 5D Mark III Digital SLR Camera does not need to be repaired as a result of this phenomenon.
The support measures for this phenomenon have been decided and they are as described below.
Canon to let robots build you camera.
Canon has announced it will take all the humans off the production line for cameras, and replace them with robots. This switch could happen as early as 2015. Fear not though, the production line employees will move to other areas in the company and not be laid off.
No mention of lens manufacturing, I’m sure that sort of things does need human interaction.
No word on when Canon will replace the photographer with robots.

Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L
A few reports around the globe about the EF 24-70 f/2.8L being officially discontinued. This was an inevitable event.
I’ve had at least 2 suggestions that have said the version II delay has been to dump excess stock of the version 1. How plausible is that? I don’t know.
Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8L @ B&H for $1579
There has been no mention of another delay for the version II. It’s still slated to start shipping in July. You can still preorder it at B&H for $2299. Do not expect any sort of price drop on the version II for quite some time.

3D for the megapixel lover
The Canon EOS-3D has been a rumored camera since before rumor sites, and every so often a flurry of new rumors under the moniker “EOS-3D” surface.
Recently a suggestion that a new “high megapixel” camera will be around by spring 2013 has come about. It’s reported that at least a couple of test bodies are being used in the US and in Asia.
While I don’t doubt high megapixel sensors are in testing, it’s probably too early to nail down exact specs. I also dislike the name “3D” if a product doesn’t actually shoot 3D.
Another suggestion is the 1D C isn’t going to be the only Cinema EOS DSLR by the end of 2013.

Canon Rumors Sponsors a Short Film Project
My friend Mitch from Planet5D decided to make a short film with another new friend Barry Andersson from Deodand Entertainment. Mitch asked if I wanted to provide some funding, and I obliged. The film is the first I’ve seen shot entirely with the Canon EOS 5D Mark III, and that’s what drew me into the project. I hung out with both of these guys at NAB and was quite impressed by how serious they took the project, from the story, execution and casting. I hope to help more in the future.
Barry Andersson, director and co-producer, said: “The film was designed to fit a budget that many filmmakers and still photographers can afford. My team tailored our shooting schedule, equipment and techniques to be accessible to all budget levels. My goal was to show that people can get absurdly good results with a DSLR camera with a smaller price tag than they realize.”
The film and summary after the break.
Random Tidbits
A few randon things came in that go against some of things we’ve heard about the 7D replacement.
Two bits of info say an APS-C camera capable of 10fps is in testing, the same camera also has a variation of the 61pt AF system found in the 5D Mark III and 1D X. No mention of megapixels or any other features of the prototype.

For Photokina?
Another mention of a new and less expensive full frame camera from Canon for Photokina. We reported this a few times before here and here.
Specs mentioned include:
CRs Take
While I don’t doubt a less expensive full frame camera in Canon’s future, I think most specs currently floating around will be of the wish-list variety. I would expect the camera to have the same 22mp sensor that is found in the 5D Mark III. After that , you can start knocking off about $1500 in “features” from the 5D3 to make the new camera.

So they’re probably good enough for you!
Canon USA sent out a press release talking about how the 5D Mark II & 7D were used to film stunt sequences on the somewhat popular Avengers movie that just came out.
With intense action and visual effects captured by the Canon cameras, “Marvel’s The Avengers” required close-quarter action work with unrepeatable stunts. “The 5D Mark II and the 7D digital SLR cameras produce excellent, cinema-worthy images. They are great for shooting additional angles that give film editors more options for creating powerfully immersive and kaleidoscopic views of action scenes,” explained the film’s cinematographer, Seamus McGarvey.
You can read the whole press release here.
