    Haha. I just bought a used 400 f5.6 so I am selfishly praying it’s a 500 5.6 IS. If it’s a 400 5.6 IS then I can turn it around and probably expect to pay easily double what I paid for the 400 5.6 :-( and :-)

yea, I used to pray for a 400/5.6 IS…. since I switched to FF Id love nothing more than a 600/5.6 though Id settle for 500/5.6 … somehow I don’t think I’ll be getting either anytime soon (if ever)

Could this be a photoshop job? I don’t see any appreciable difference in design from the 450D. Unless the grip is a smidge wider, but that could be my eyes fooling me.

Yes! That articulating screen is too small and just doesn’t look right. I don’t think the “500D” text is in the reflection either..

    Justin Reply:

I think the reflection is right.

    kurth Reply:

it’s definitely the 500d in the reflection – it took it into ps and adjusted the curves – reversed and upside down bottomhalf 500d !

When early images of 5D2, 50D were released, there were many skeptics who denounced them as fakes. I wonder how many hats these fellahs have eaten… ;)

Even if that is a fake picture of the camera, you know it’s going to look 90% similar to that.

Whats the credibility on this rumor?

Is there really an event tomorrow?

F*CK articulating screens! One more thing to break….

Credibility = high. This has been building for awhile. CR4 given to this rumor weeks ago.

    gwac Reply:

You don’t HAVE to use it… you could just keep it tucked into the camera like a normal screen.

    barrosinc Reply:

I guess its usefull on liveview…

but i dont like them… they tendo to be bulky and the flip flip flip thing drives me nuts…

articulate screen is great, for macro photography! :D
the articulation of the monitor in this image useless… the monitor like this is very interesting: http://www.trustedreviews.com/images/article/inline/6690-DSLRA300LCD3.jpg

I LOVE articulating screens. It’s like having a waist-level finder in an old medium-format camera…but better. Incredibly useful. I really hope it’s for real.

  11. Goob Says:

I hope this is correct. Only thing that seems strange with the picture is the 4:3 aspect of the screen, it should be 3:2.

    That’s what looked off.

Nice observation. This picture is a fake for sure.

    Scott Reply:

The LCDs on all Canon DSLRs are 4:3; that’s why there’s a black bar at the top of the review image that shows TV and AV and file #. This shot looks pretty real to me, though I guess we’ll find out tomorrow.

Are the LCD’s from Canon cameras made by Sony?

  14. the fake-real one Says:

Even if this is the real camera, it will be a 3d rendering, much easier to make and light than a nice product photo. Most of the electronic marketing images these days are created from 3d renders.

So the 5d in the reflection is not necessarily a give away. Just means who ever rendered the model used a GI renderer

Two features that are more important to me than an articulating LCD:

    i) Sensor quality, particularly in the low ISO dynamic range department

    ii) AF micro-adjustment

Without these improvements, the 500D holds ZERO interest for me.

    Reply

    Justin Reply:

Will a sub $900 camera really get micro adjustment? Won’t that be reserved for the semi-pro, and pro-lines? I’d like to see it. And maybe you’re right.

    Reply

    gwac Reply:

Doesn’t the new Oly e-620 have the AF micro adjust? They’re much nicer about customization on their entry level dSLRS than Canon/Nikon.

    Reply

    Bill Reply:

you’ll never see ii) on their entry level DSLR, even if they split the line and announce both a 2000D and a 500D.

    Daniel Cooper Reply:

I agree wholeheartedly. Sensor quality should be the primary concern.

What’s the difference between “articulated screen” and “swivel screen”? Previously I thought articulated meant the screen was tiltable and swivel was what’s shown in this pic. But are they only synonyms?

i am still very interested to see exactly what canon is putting in this model, though.

Articulated screens are not that important anymore, now that the latest VGA screens can be viewed from like 160°. It’s almost like looking at a CRT.

    JB Reply:

Seems either you have never tried to use live view on a sunny day at an awkward angle and you have never used a video camera on a tripod.

The articulating screen is not only useful it’s indispensable for video on the new vDSLRs

    Reply

    Kyle Reply:

I wouldn’t say it’s indispensable. I certainly don’t miss it on my 5D mk.II; I’d much rather have a few extra manual video settings than that. Of course, I’m not trying to take video in the middle of a crowd (you sometimes see people with their arms held up high trying to video over other people’s heads)… Not sure what else it would be useful for. My live view is fine, and I usually use a tripod. You know you can change brightness settings, right?

  21. Mike Says:

Non-native English speaker, there is no difference between “swivel screen” and “articulating screen”. Canon’s official term is articulating screen. Swivel is just a shorter slang term.

If they did “save the best for last” and they release only a 500D, I’m going to seriously start questioning whether Canon is indeed, still the best.
I mean, what’s better than two ground-breaking, technology shattering tilt-shift lenses?
And yes, I’ll slap the first one who says a Rebel! :)

To Canon: micro af adjustment in new rebel please ;)

    Reply

    Michal Reply:

Please don’t Canon. This is a professional feature that is not needed in an entry level, amateur DLSR, it would only unnecessarily jack up the price. If you need this, don’t buy xxxD, buy xxD.

    Pawel Reply:

Don’t be jealous (I suppose you have 50d :P). People use rebels with many lenses. Often with third-party lenses… Thus micro af regulation is needed.

  28. Tom Says:

I would be surprised if the 500D had video, when the mid level 50D doesn’t have it yet. The entry level camera has to be a step down in terms of features, otherwise people won’t consider buying the more expensive one.

    Reply

    Justin Reply:

Canon has a history of leading with features in their entry level machine. Gee whiz bang shucks sells on entry level cameras and you better believe this segment is the cash cow for a company like canon.

    Arda Reply:

if Canon does not come out with 500D with video, people will buy Nikon D90 and one of them is me..

This topic got lot of comments fast.

I wonder if Canon will implement an articulated LCD screen in higher EOS models?

And in Full Frame EOS DSLRs ?

Despite an articulated screen can make it a bit weak, it’s also very useful…

And what about the size? 3.5″ anytime?

    Anonymous Reply:

I have a 3 inch screen and to be honest, I can’t imagine having a larger screen without it just getting in the way without any real advantage. Am I alone in this or do others agree?

    Justin Reply:

It’s also nice because it can flip inward and act as a screen protector for travel. But I can hear the pros moaning about dust and debris getting in there. Valid moans.
