The best resource I know of for night photography is David Kingham.  He specializes in night/Milky Way photography and has a lot of great gear information and tutorials on his website.  Definitely worth checking out.

I currently own a 7D and at the top of my wishlist for the 7D Mk II is improved performance in low light and high ISO.  I don't own the fastest lenses Canon has to offer so that improvement alone would be greatly appreciated!

degies...I watched that Art Morris video a few weeks ago.  His work is amazing.  All of us mere mortals can only dream about the access to equipment that Canon's Masters of Light get!

I'm new to using Photoshop (CS5) and am wondering what seasoned users have found to be their most successful workflow options when it comes to sharpening and producing really crisp images for web display.  I'm assuming a good initial capture in-camera.  Thanks in advance.

Thanks bseitz234 and viggen61 for your clarifications.  This doesn't sound like a workable combo for capturing birds in flight.

Yes, the images were shot in RAW and cropped as well as sized down in PS to a reasonable level for web posting.

I'm new to Canon Rumors and so glad I found it because it's been a great source of knowledge for me.  I recently bought a 400/5.6 mainly for birding and wildlife photography.  I chose that particular lens because of its relatively low cost compared to the other super telephotos in Canon's lineup.  I've been thinking about getting a TC to use in combination with my 7D and 400 for the extra reach but am concerned this combination might not work because of an issue with F8 center point AF I've seen mentioned before.  I don't fully understand what this is about but would like to be sure that the TC will work before I spend the money on it.  Any enlightenment on this topic is greatly appreciated as I may be totally off base in my understanding.

I am a complete newby to Photoshop as I just finished a series of video tutorials and used ACR, Photoshop for the first time on this set of images, so excuse me if I don't fully understand your questions.  In ACR the crop % shows 54 for the seagull and 45 for the eagle.  I believe I settled on Unsharp mask for the sharpening method.  Some of the sharpness seems to have been lost in posting to this website so I have much to learn and improve upon!

I just used my 400/5.6 for only the 2nd time in the field for birding and was very pleased with the results.  I was using my 7D on a tripod at ISO 400 and high shutter speed.  These images are heavily cropped.  I think the 400/5.6 is a great value compared to Canon's other super telephotos.
