First of, do you have a budget?
And if you are on a really tight budget, then the 50mm f/1.4 is a great lens. The 50mm was a staple lens back in the day and the perspective of it is closest to the human eyes'.

If you are concerned about the camera's capability to shoot sports, don't be. Sports photography relies more on the photographer's knowledge of the sport and photographic techniques. I have been shooting volleyball and basketball games for my school with my 550D and have managed to get some keepers. Sure it may be frustrating at times, but any dSLR can shoot sports.

As for your affinity to the D700, I would recommend that you pick up the D600 if you can afford it. The D600 has a better sensor and you won't have buyer's remorse.

From what I have read and heard, Adobe RGB has a bigger color range and it is better suited for printing when compared to sRGB. On the other hand, sRGB is optimize for screen and web usage.

Or you could look at the new Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 VC and trade it with the 24L lens. I've read that the Tamron's image quality is actually comparable and even beats the 24-70mm version I lens in some areas. So if you don't want to give up your 50L, which will be useful in low-light situation or times when you want a smaller DOF, then consider this suggestion.

I would also recommend the Canon 135mm f/2 L. Personally, I have covered a few basketball and volleyball games for my school and use the 550D and 24-70L. I find that even with 70mm at the long end with the crop factor is not tight enough for basketball or volleyball games. With an effective 112mm, I had to stand really close to the side lines to get a tight shot. I think that with the 135mm, you can stand further back and not get in the way of the referee or the game. And with the ridiculously high ISO capability of your 5D Mark III compared to a rebel series body, you can raise the ISO and shutter speed and still get a clean, well captured shot. Just my opinion.

I don't think that DSLR with APS-C sized sensors is at the end of its era. As already said, the crop factor is hugely beneficial for wildlife and sports photographer. That being said, some people just like using a single lens reflex camera and composing through an optical viewfinder, so I guess APS-C sized sensor in a camera with a smaller form factor fulfil this role. And with sensor technology getting better, we may see more potential in a smaller sized sensor. These are just my opinion.

Hi CR Community,

I have been lingering around this forum for some time now, but have not really posted much. Today, I found that DxOMark released their testings for the 650D. However, they showed that the 650D falls short in every way when compared with its competition. So what do you guys think? Personally, I don't view sensor measurement all that seriously, it is how you use the camera and performance in the real world that matters most.

Well, it all boils down to what you're shooting. The IS on the 70-200 f4L will definitely help for you to handhold your camera at a longer shutter speed. But in some situations, you will need the extra f-stop with the f/2.8 as it will give you more bokeh and let you use a higher shutter speed. Mind you, the IS won't help in freezing motion, so it just depends on your situation.

+1 on the 70-200mm. That lens is staple for any wedding photographer's kit simply because of the versatility and the focal range. I recommend you get the 70-200 f2.8 IS II as it is optically king and the extra f-stop and IS will help in darker locations, despite the weight. And looking at your current set-up, you've got the shorter focal lengths covered.

So, for APS-C you don't have anything ultra-wide, but apart from that you're fine. But for full frame, you're lacking on both the ultra-wide end (<24mm) and on the long end (>70mm).

A 70-200 f/4L IS and a Samyang 14mm f/2.8 (caution: only manual focus) would fill both gaps, and will fall just within your budget if you sell the 55-250.

In any case, for me the biggest question is... why do you need the 550D?
I'd sell that one and its two lenses. If you want a smaller camera to bring around, then buy something like a Sony NEX-5N with Sigma 30mm f/2.8 (much better camera, and much smaller too).
(actually, I'm halfway there: I already have the 5N, the sigma is coming in the following weeks)


BTW: the Samyang 14mm is not perfect but it's a very nice budget lens, read my comments about it here:

Thanks for the response. The reason I need to have two bodies as I do school events and my sister is going to learn photography soon. Getting something like the NEX-5n is not a bad idea, but I rather wait for the mirrorless market to mature and develop more lenses. I am primarily looking for prime lenses as I think zoom lenses are quite huge and hefty for my style of photography.

Lately, I have been thinking about how fragmented my gear really is. I currently have two different system of lenses, one being EF and the other EF-S. I have the 5D Mark II and the 550D with the 24-70L, 50mm f1.8, 18-55, and 55-250. Since these are like two different mounts, I think that I may be hampered without the compatibility to fit my lenses on all of my body. At the same time, I am thinking of revamping my kit and upgrading to something better. I usually do event photography for school, some occasional street photography, still life, and portraitures. If you had a budget of below $1500, what will you do?

I personally suggest that you look into the Lowepro Fastpack 350 if you want to carry a lot of gear at once. Its a really comfortable bag to carry even with a lot of equipments in it.
