EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: EOS-1D C Firmware After NAB
« on: April 03, 2013, 10:04:19 AM »
I hope the people at Magic Lantern get their hands on this and reverse engineer the technology for the 1DX and 5DMK3.

Last I read, they have no intentions of ever bringing Magic Lantern to the 1DX, and explicitly stated they will never attempt to hack it to become a 1DC.

And I agree completely.  It's not really a gentlemen's agreement, being one sided and all; more like a gentlemen's nod.  As long as Canon doesn't try and stop them, and they've been WAY more generous in that regard than Nikon would ever consider, the ML team has no intention of pushing too far.  Turning a 1DX into a 1DC in firmware would be too far.

They're (ML Devs) even speculating that a few "suspiciously convenient" hooks were left in recent Canon firmwares just for them.  Which if it's true, means Canon isn't just turning a blind eye, they're passively assisting.  That's huge, and bodes well for the future of ML.  And shows that Canon sees the benefit of having them around, much like a robust 3rd party ecosystem benefits them.

I agree that ML will never touch a 1DX turning it to be a 1DC, especially after Canon publicly announces that they would take a legal action if it happens.

You guys could be right that it's the same old sensor. On the other hand, being 18MP doesn't mean it has to be the same old one. Maybe 18MP is a sweet spot for APS-C. Maybe higher pixel count is reserved for more advanced cameras.

Anyhow, I'm still hopeful for another body as it's pretty uncommon for Canon to send out invitation for lower-end bodies.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Deal: Canon EF 24-105 f/4L IS $749
« on: November 01, 2012, 01:16:47 PM »
Just remember one very important thing regarding MAP, it ONLY applies to the minimum price a retailer can advertise an item for.  It does NOT establish a minimum a retailer can SELL an item for.  So if you see the 5D MkIII listed or advertised for $3,499 starting tomorrow, call them and just ask would you be willing to sell it for $2,999?  If they say no, they can't do that because of Canon.  Explain that no factory or distributor can legally set a minimum sell price, they can establish a minimum adverstised price in the United States.  Big difference between the two.

True and false. It's true that a retailer can do that. However, if it's known to do something like that and if Canon is really strict about it, it's not that difficult for Canon to figure it out and then suspend the account of such retailer.

In golf business, this policy has been implemented for years. And I know a retailer that had their account suspended for one whole year because they're known to have phone orders at way below manufacturer's minimum price.

Misinformation!!!

bigvalueinc is not an authorized dealer! They will lie to your face that their products have Canon USA warranty. They don't! If you know about Canon warranty and complaint enough, they will give you extended warranty through Consumer Priority Service (CPS) for free.

This happens to a friend of mine who bought something from them and their product didn't have Canon USA warranty card.
Correct. If you go to the auction and click on the Canon USA Warranty in the description, it takes you to Canon USA's website. Here, you will enter the information for the product whether its a lens or body and Canon will give you an ESTIMATE for the repair.

To be more specific, from knowing Canon's customer service in the past, Canon USA provided warranty service even for a product from unauthorized dealers if customer can provide a valid receipt from any USA retailer. This is for courtesy. However, the last time I talked to Canon, they told me that this was not guaranteed as this policy might change anytime soon. And I highly suspect that Canon will now strictly implement warranty support for authorized dealers only, especially when the price gap is getting wider between gray market and USA products.

Basically, one should think about this deal as "new with no warranty".

Canon General / Re: Canon's MAP Pricing Goes Into Full Effect Today

Golf business has been this way for years. Retailers cannot even allow coupons to apply to their products.

Regarding the laws, I think there is always a loop hole both ways. Retailers can just advertise it as 'price too low to advertise' or they can list it on eBay. On the other hand, manufacturers can cut the retailers' account by saying the marketing strategy in the area has changed. I know one famous golf pro shop that usually sells their stuffs at a really really low price. Last time I called, their Ping account was cut for a year. That's why, if you're in golfing market, you'll see that most retailers won't risk advertising their prices below the minimum as required.

Now, back to photography. If, say, Adorama makes another spot sale on eBay for 5D Mark III for $2,750, we'll have to see how it pans out. Canon might not want to risk cutting big account like Adorama. But, who knows? B&H may put some pressure on Canon as well.

One thing for sure. I don't think anyone who wants Canon gear will find something cheap in the next few weeks from an authorized dealer.

Pricewatch Deals / Re: Deal: Canon EOS 5D Mark II Body for $1549
« on: October 15, 2012, 03:17:14 PM »
Hmmm.. i see his reviews on eBay and it seems he sells a lot of gray market stuff, the last review there is from someone who bought a Canon 5D III..

look at the attachement

BigValueInc is not a Canon authorized dealer, so it's basically up to Canon's courtesy whether or not they'll service the item. However, they obviously want to mislead people to believe they'd get USA product with USA warranty. A scam to me.

EOS Bodies / Re: EOS 7D Mark II, EOS 70D & 700D in 2013? [CR1]

I can't help but chuckle at the state of affairs on this forum now. For years I coveted a 5Dmkii but couldn't justify getting rid of my 7D to do it. After all the 7D AF system is "light years" ahead of the antiquated 5dmkii AF system. I read hundreds of threads and posts dedicated to how bad the mkii AF system was/is. The general consensus was just giv us a 22mp (who needs more, right) 5D with a better AF system. Well Canon delivered exactly that. What's the old saying? Watch out, you might get what you asked for. I'm still amazed at the pictures a lot of you have gotten with your 5D mkii and it's antiquated AF system.

So what exactly is needed on the 7Dmkii ? Just better DR? More MP? WiFi? Espresso maker? Remember the warning (it's in bold above).

P.S. I'm busy saving for a 5D mkiii and I am soooo loking forward to getting my hands on it, even if it doesn't have enough DR/MP/WiFi/whotsits/thinga-mabobs.  ;)

The price on the 5D3 did seem a bit high at intro since it didn't also bring along top low ISO DR, although it's now settling more into $2800-3100 range which seems perfectly fine.

Where? I see the 5DIII still almost US$3500

Beach sold 100+ units at $2,799 and Adorama beat Beach at $2,750 for 818 units.

Yep, you gotta look around.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon EOS 4D reference in Wifi remote app video

If canon wrote it, then ok, it's more believable.
But still, 4 in Chinese / Japanese is 四, 'sì' in Mandarin. Death is 死, 'sǐ'.

They've just proven that there will be no G13 or G14 (14, 十四, 'shī sì', sounds like 尸死, 'shī sǐ', 'dead corpse', 逝 shì means die, 弑 shì means 'murder a superior' (yes, I just went through my dictionary and found them)).

So, it's gonna be named 4D then. And it will be their 'killer" camera. :D

Hope to see a really innovative canon 6D like the Nikon D600! :)

Articulated screen, built-in time-lapse, built in flash ecc

PLEASE NO a stupid touch screen

+1

You and I think alike. I will only find the new 6D useful if it's in a compact size and comes with flipped screen & built-in flash. Built-in time lapse would be nice. But the most important is good AF and has MA.

This will be a perfect backup to my 5D3.

For anyone thinking of a 6D over a 5D3, it will be disappointing if there's no MA but that would certainly be a good feature to leave out in order to position this body sufficiently below the 5D3.   Yes, I know the 7D has MA but other than the FF sensor the specs of this body are all below the 7D so they could get away with leaving MA out.

If you shoot with a 5D3 now and use flash then you must have external flashes already... why then would you be so interested in a pop-up flash on a 6D as a backup to your 5D3?

Yes, I do own external flashes. Right now, 3 600EX-RT's to be exact.

Certainly, there are situations that I could not rug around my gear. And some of those occasions, it's best just to have only one camera and one lens to be as low profile as possible. I used to carry a 60D for that. I really liked the 60D for its compact size and flipped screen, but not having MA was a deal breaker at the end.

EOS Bodies / Re: Canon is out foxed.

Why is the number of AF points a better measuring stick than megapixels?
I typically only use 1 AF point, so if the camera has 65, 64 of them are useless to me.
And when one isn't good enough, I use live view.

Whereas I can use every megapixel with every photograph.

As it is with AF points, it is the quality of them that matters more than the number of them. If the 6D had 39 AF points that worked about as well as the 5D2's 11 then it wouldn't matter if it had 39 or 390 - only one of them would actually be of use. So it all depends on if the 6D will have 11 AF points then is the AF module simply a 5D2 "spare part" or a completely new module.

Oh, as for SD vs CF. It's a pointless comparison. It's a place to put digital photographs, nothing more. If the camera didn't have such a thing then that would be a problem.

There are applications when live view is useful, however, there are much more of those that it's not.

Good for you that you can find only 1 AF point sufficient. However, for most photographers, that's not the case. Focus and recompose technique doesn't work well with fast primes when shot wide open. When I used 5D2 with 85L in well-lit area, even a slight move from an outer focus point would end up as the picture is out of focus.

So, to me, this camera would be a letdown if it has only 1 cross-type sensor. Still, I do believe that the leaked specs should read "11-point all cross-type AF (f/2.8 at center: Dual Cross Sensor)". 11 cross-type points would be a little disappointing, but definitely acceptable compared to only 1 cross-type.

I could have used this one as a backup if it has flipped screen and built-in flash. But it doesn't look like it's gonna come out that way.

Looks like more than one leaked picture. So, this could be real, but the specs are really disappointing.

Did people from the Photoshop 101 class got to post on CR for homework?

Oh, yeah, that's an intelligent post. Hope you feel better with yourself for it.

7D has its specs like this:

- 19-point all cross-type AF (f/2.8 at center: Dual Cross Sensor)

Is it possible that the 6D specs should read:

- 11-point all cross-type AF (f/2.8 at center: Dual Cross Sensor)

If it is, this camera is not too bad after all. But, still, flash sync at 1/180 and highest shutter speed at 1/4000? That leaves to be desired.
