Which is not really a bad thing for a camera that is mainly used for Portrait/Landscape/Architecture as long as they keep it reasonable (around 3fps) ... I only hope they will keep a good AF system and not go back to the stone age AF of the 5d MkII, in that regard the 5d MK III is really two steps forward ...

I would either get a 17-40mm f4 L or a 24-70mm F4 IS for your trip as only lens, depending on what focal range you prefer. These both are not too large and give you a wider range of possible applications than only taking a 50mm lens with you . if you need f2.8 also you should consider the 40mm f2.8 which is about the same size as a lenscap only a bit thicker.

Well for that price it should better be stellar in IQ ... otherwise the 300 f2.8 IS II + the 1.4x and 2.0x Ext III is the much better deal

« on: December 17, 2012, 05:49:04 AM »Chris, nice comp, but I'm wondering what you achieved by the long exposure? Maybe a bit smother water? I see that it was 8 seconds and ISO 320, f8. why not push it a bit more, and get a 30sec+ exposure? you would start to get a lot more cloud movement and a more surreal effect, but maybe that is just my tendency to push things to the limit. Also the white balance is just a bit off, which tends to be a major problem of dark ND filters. Always helpful to shoot these in RAW so it's not as much of a problem.
The 8sec exposure is just the middle of the bracket... (-2 to +2)
The WB maybe a bit off, but for an evening shot I like this warmer look more, after all that was directly before sunset and the orange tone is usually also there in nature.
The effect is btw quite drastic, the lower half of the picture would be a total different look if not using the filter as this is a running river. However I would not want to stack two filters or use much lower f values as I think you lose way too much fine detail. (The detail on this is quite good at original resolution)

Since there is no EXIF data, I ask:
- What lens (and focal distance if you used a zoom)?
- When did you take it? Time, season - the water looks very still...
was a 17-40mm f4 L @ f8 at 17mm 5 shot bracket -2 to +2 at ISO100 ... Season was late Summer at around 11PM
