Id presume this is the worst time of year to buy gear. But I just picked up the 24-70 for less than I have ever seen it so I am happy. From past experience, usually late Nov and early Dec is best. I think IMAP has kept the price higher but you can still find great deals if you wait and look. Also, I only buy from amazon and bh so I do not expect to see prices like the ones you have stated for the 5dIII. Though if I remember right, I think amazon had the 5dIII back in Nov for 2999 or maybe even less for about a day. Good luck and stay patient. It pays off if you don't need the gear right now.

Just wanted to point out that the canon 24-70mm 2.8L II is currently $2015 shipped and sold by amazon. Its $2099 minus an instant 4% with the current promotion. This is the lowest price I have ever seen for it not on ebay and in new condition. Put it on a cash back credit card and you can get this lens for under 2k!

What usually happens is the dealers know people are going to buy these items as soon as the rebates start so they mark them up, but after awhile they begin to drop again and after a few weeks of rebates they end up lower than before the rebates started. Say for example the 24-70 is now about $2049. The 200 dollar rebate might end up bring it down to between $1949 to $1999. I expect it to be that price in a month or so. In December with the last rebates. I managed to pick up a new 70-200 II 2.8l for about $1875 counting a 10% off amazon christmas coupon and 1% back on my visa card. Also no tax in my state You just have to wait it out.

Very easy to tell on this one. Just look at the reason he is selling it and ask yourself. Would you sell a lens for 80% off thats perfect just because "you do not use it often." I would expect no more than the price of this lens (2800) as a discount from the current sale price. You would be better off sending me your $2800 and I'll send you a broken 50 1.8 II.

I would highly suggest asking yourself "Will I ever go full frame?" If so, then 700-1000 dollars (the price of the 15-85 and 17-55 respectively) is a lot to spend considering it won't work on a full body. All lens should be considered a long-term investment that will go from camera to camera.

It was 1299 for the last 2 months basically before the previous rebate ended. I would actually be surprised if it doesn't reach that price again. I almost bought it but for 1299 there are many other lenses I would rather have or put money towards. So basically, just wait. Within a month I bet it will be 1299 on amazon or BHphoto. Now that rebates are active.... some competitive pricing will start.

I highly suggested IS for doing hand held macro photography. The hybrid system in the 100mm 2.8L is great and the lens is razor sharp. I have never regretted buying that lens. I now have the 70-200 2.8l II and use that more but if I want to do anything near the 100mm range and any macro I strongly prefer the 100mm 2.8L over that big ass thing. If you absolutely cannot find a way to get the extra $400 for the IS, weather sealing and slightly better build quality then the non L 100 will give great pictures too but you might find yourself asking..what if? You wont regret buying the 100 L IS if you do and you will never ask what if because now you have greatness in your hands!

The rebate prices were just released today so I expect over the course of this program prices will continue to fall because of competition. You will probably see the best prices in the last two weeks of the program. I am waiting for the 24-70 to drop below 2k before I pull the trigger. I was lucky in Dec and got the 70-200 for less than 1900 new on amazon.

Yeah it is supposed to be not that good but then again it sells for $160 new so you get what you pay for. If you are interested in that focal length the 70-300 f/4-5.6 IS is a pretty good lens and costs about 500 new. I would definitely look for one of these used or a 70-200mm f4L used which is 650 new. Remember... a good zoom is never cheap.

I will admit that for the money, it is an amazing lens. I also love my 40mm 2.8 which is 40 bucks more but built a lot better. With the 50 1.8 II, I just cannot get past the bokeh. To me, it is harsh. I have tried it many many times wanting to buy it because I liked the price but I just cannot due to the bokeh and the build quality. If I was doing a lot of indoor shooting and wanted a backup lens for being in my pocket, then I would choose this as my 40mm f/2.8 just does not perform well enough in low light.

I would go with a b+w as well. All the mount widths should be fine. The F-pro is cheapest and the XS-pro is the newest with nano tech coating to repel water better. Make sure to get a MRC (Multicoating).

If I were you I would buy:

Since you are putting it on a 2000+ dollar lens, get a good filter. This is a clear filter and one of b+w bests with MRC, slim and nano. At 126, I find it a very acceptable price. I use this on my 16-35mm and I notice no vignetting so you definitely shouldn't get any.

BTW, you dont have to get a UV since you use a digital camera. Clear will work just as well.
