Lenses / Older L lens repair 400mm 2.8L II (non-IS)
« on: October 02, 2012, 01:41:28 PM »
I own the pre-IS 400mm f/2.8L II and see that it is not listed on the CPS repair eligible list. My lens is working great at the moment, but I am concerned that if the USM fails or something else goes wrong that I am going to have a very expensive paperweight. I am considering selling it while I can.

Does anyone know where I can get it serviced? Parts availability?

"...on 28 November 2013, current predictions are of an object that will dazzle the eye at up to magnitude —16. That's far brighter than the full Moon."

Anyone considering one of these? It seems really cool, but expensive.

If you haven't heard, they updated Apple RAW support last night:

5D MK III Sample Images / The moon tonight

Obviously, I have exaggerated the contrast. I think it's a neat look if not necessarily realistic. I used the same procedure as when I last shot the full moon in December on my Mk II. The Mk III image does show more detail, but I can't rule out tonight being clearer.

Shot with the older (mine has a 1999 date code) 400mm f/2.8L USM II and processed with Nik's ColorEfex Pro 4.

Also, I found the AF to be f*ing amazing and I am very happy with the sharpness (complaints I keep seeing on the forum).

Very impressive that the ISO score essentially matches the D4. Wow, just Wow.

Lenses / The anti-extension tube: EF-S adapter for EF lenses
« on: March 20, 2012, 02:44:50 PM »
I have a theoretical question for any of you with a working knowledge of lenses/optics.

If an extender works by taking the central part of a lens's image circle and enlarges it to cover the whole sensor(thus magnifying and reducing brightness), shouldn't it be possible to create an adapter for crop sensor cameras that uses the entire image circle of a full-frame lens and reduces it to the size of the cropped sensor to gain the full angle of view? Would the resulting smaller light circle also be brighter since it's focused onto a smaller area?

EOS Bodies / Apparently, Nikon users are switching to Canon...
« on: March 04, 2012, 04:51:18 PM »
I've listed my 5D Mk II for sale on craigslist and received two responses from people who told me they are switching from Nikon and asked if I had a lens they could try the camera out with. There is also someone with an ad offering to trade their D700 for a 5D Mk II.

Could it be that D700 owners were waiting patiently to see what Canon and Nikon have come up with and simply decided the best answer is to go for a deal on a used 5D Mk II?

Canon General / Warranty / Registration question

Is the warranty card actually needed for warranty service on a Canon body or lens if I registered them after I purchased them?

Lenses / Sigma lens deals ($100 off 85mm f/1.4)
« on: December 16, 2011, 03:14:34 PM »
the-digital-picture.com has just shared a list of fresh Sigma deals including $100 off the 85mm f/1.4 at Adorama. I know there has been a lot of interest in this lens lately, so this is a great chance to get one at a discount.

Software & Accessories / Spyder3Pro vs. Spyder3Elite: Your thoughts
« on: December 06, 2011, 01:19:15 PM »
I am finally going to buy a monitor color calibration tool and these two seem to get favorable reviews. What's not clear to me is the difference between the two. I see that they sell software to upgrade from Pro to Elite, so it seems like the actual hardware is the same. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Lenses / Canon EF 400mm f2.8L II USM (non IS)
« on: November 17, 2011, 03:23:39 PM »
I have an opportunity to buy an excellent Canon EF 400mm f2.8L II USM locally and wanted some advice. These lenses are getting pretty old. Does Canon still service them? If not, does anyone? Browsing around craigslist and ebay,  the asking price for these seems to be around $4000 based on the two that I have seen. I have negotiated to $3600 for this copy. Does that seem reasonable? Anything I should know or other concerns?

I really appreciate the help!
