Lenses / The anti-extension tube: EF-S adapter for EF lenses

I have a theoretical question for any of you with a working knowledge of lenses/optics.

If an extender works by taking the central part of a lens's image circle and enlarges it to cover the whole sensor(thus magnifying and reducing brightness), shouldn't it be possible to create an adapter for crop sensor cameras that uses the entire image circle of a full-frame lens and reduces it to the size of the cropped sensor to gain the full angle of view? Would the resulting smaller light circle also be brighter since it's focused onto a smaller area?

I've listed my 5D Mk II for sale on craigslist and received two responses from people who told me they are switching from Nikon and asked if I had a lens they could try the camera out with. There is also someone with an ad offering to trade their D700 for a 5D Mk II.

Could it be that D700 owners were waiting patiently to see what Canon and Nikon have come up with and simply decided the best answer is to go for a deal on a used 5D Mk II?

Software & Accessories / Spyder3Pro vs. Spyder3Elite: Your thoughts

I am finally going to buy a monitor color calibration tool and these two seem to get favorable reviews. What's not clear to me is the difference between the two. I see that they sell software to upgrade from Pro to Elite, so it seems like the actual hardware is the same. Thoughts? Recommendations?

Lenses / Canon EF 400mm f2.8L II USM (non IS)

I have an opportunity to buy an excellent Canon EF 400mm f2.8L II USM locally and wanted some advice. These lenses are getting pretty old. Does Canon still service them? If not, does anyone? Browsing around craigslist and ebay,  the asking price for these seems to be around $4000 based on the two that I have seen. I have negotiated to $3600 for this copy. Does that seem reasonable? Anything I should know or other concerns?
