EOS Bodies / Re: 6D or 5D Mk II
« on: September 20, 2012, 05:22:00 PM »
I was saving my money for a 5Diii, when the 6D was announced I considered it, but just yesterday I bought a barley used 5dii for 1,400.

I'm sure the 6D's wi-fi and GPS are nice, I just don't see myself actually using it. The 5diii is very expensive, but is worth every penny, as much as I would like the better AF system it's just not worth the extra price for a casual shooter such as myself. Also seeing that the 5diii sensor is only a small improvement over the 5dii, this pushed me into the 5dii purchase.

Even though value is a subjective term, I think the 6D, 5dii, and 5dii are all decent values. If you can find a lightly used 5dii for a reasonable price I would go for that, put the money you save into glass.

I wouldn't buy it soley for the lack of a joystick. Love that thing. I tried using my brother in laws t3i, just couldn't do it.

Macro / Re: Canon MP-E 65 1x-5x 2.8 Macro Lens example photos

I just noticed this thread, there are some awesome pictures in here. I want this lens now.......

If you search MP-E on flickr, there are a few groups with tons of great shots.

I almost spit my coffee out when I saw the red jewels.

Canon General / Re: How many of us are making money out of photography ?

I work in a cruise ship as a Photographer, so basically I make money out of photography, they do provide cameras (S___ nikon d300s) and I spent over 8K with Canon and I live a life with no regrets :)
Canon the only way!

That's either very enjoyable or incredibly monotonous.

Lenses / Re: Were EF-S lenses a bad idea?

If you have several of them and are moving to a FF camera, then maybe. I would have to  guess that for the vas majority of users it's a non issue.

I have a 50D right now and plan on getting the 5Diii this fall, I have one EF-S lenses that I bought used just because it was a cheap way to get wide on a crop body. I was pleasantly surprised by it's sharpness.

Canon General / Re: Canon Suspends Operations at 3 Plants in China

What do they make in the China plants? Most of the higher end camera stuff is still made in Japan, is it not?

Hopefully it's the factory that makes the calculator mouse.

Software & Accessories / Re: GPS, does anyone really use this???

I see little pro use for it unless you are working for Nat Geo or something like that. It's nice for personal use though. I used to manually add it to photos, but it got to be to much of a pain. I'm curious to it's effects on battery life of the camera, and how well it performs indoors. Also, since the 6D has Wi-Fi, is it using Wi-Fi assistance in location tracking similar to your cell phone? One thing to be mindful of is you are sharing your photos online, make sure to strip the location from the meta data.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: The 5D Mark II: Happy 4th Birthday!

I've said this before.  A lot of pros bought the 5D Mark II instead of the 1Ds Mark III.  That should speak volumes for the quality of the camera.

I think that's also why we see the 5Diii price were it is right now. Even still it's worth it at that price.

Crop of FF? 50 is a little tight on a crop. It's fine for outdoors, but not so much inside.  Also really depends on what you are shooting most of the time.

EOS Bodies - For Stills / Re: Magic Lantern Firmware - Good or Bad?

I like it, I put it on my 50D just so I could record video with it, granted there is no sound, but it was just for fun. Works great.

Looks like there could be a "aperture" dial on it too.

I use sugmug at the power account level. It's 60/year, they did just increase prices. I still think is a decent value for what you get. You can let people order prints with it, you just don't get to sell them "you get a profit" unless you use the pro level.

I would like to see a camera with a interchangeable lens mount. Something similar to the Ricoh GXR. Granted the GXR really only changes lenses, but if you had a body with a remove part that had different lens mounts you would get something similar. You could have a camera with the ability to use almost any lens, but it would probably be dificuilt  to manufacture.

EOS Bodies / Re: Is a 46mp Canon EOS-1 on the Way? [CR1]

Why are people so hung up on file size on big megapixel cameras? If you really need this sort of thing (think billboards, sides of buildings), you are already using files that big from MF cameras or scanned MF film. Some of Canon's newer glass clearly has the resolving power for this, it will be interested to see where it goes.

Is this a new sensor, or just a higher MP variant of their existing technology? Personally I'd like to see Canon put their R/D into DR and not MP.
