Lenses / Re: Which lenses for travel kit?

And to pack all your gear i'll highly recommand F-stop gear ! You can well protect your photo gear in ICU and still have a lot of space for non photo equipment :D

Take a look at the Loka (37 liters) and Tilopa BC (48 liters) backpacks...

I can't wait to get my Loka with shallow medium ICU :o

Hi Paul,

Have you think about the Canon EF 70-300mm f/4-5.6 L IS, a great and compact zoom which offers to you a lot of possibilities. I don't own it but some firends of mine really like this lens !

take a look :

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/Reviews/Canon-EF-70-300mm-f-4-5.6-IS-L-USM-Lens-Review.aspx

You can also take the 17-40mm f/4 L and why not the future G1X

I am going to spend money I don't really have on a tele lens later this year for my crop body, so I really want to get the right one. If anyone has experience with these lenses, please give me some advice... here are my thoughts:

* 70-300L: fine but heavy lens, but is overpriced compared to the non-L version. Problem is it doesn't take a tele converter (thanks, canon marketing!) - but on the other hand, f/5.6+extender light capability would be too low anyway.

* 70-200/4L+2x: great and not too heavy lens, but using an extender doesn't make sense: In my experience, shooting moving objects at 300mm+ requires a large aperture at least of f/4 (next to a good servo af that is, unlike my 60d).

* 70-200/2.8L+2x: this is the combination I'd get at the moment - very short min. focus distance, great iq, still ok light capability w/ extender.

* the new 100-400/4-5.6L: I really don't know what to make of this: if the price prediction is right (which I doubt knowing canon rumors :-)) it is more expensive than the 70-200/2.8+2x combination, covers about the same focal distances and has worse light capability - why would anybody want to buy that? As I wrote above, extending a 5.6 lens doesn't make much sense to me...

And don't forget the SIGMA 120-300mm F2,8 APO EX DG OS HSM, this is a very very good lens !

I hope it won't delayed the new 300mm f/4 L IS II ;)

This one was expected for a long time and will be a terrific lens ! Wait and see for the real price because the one announced is 1000$ more expensive than a 70-200 f/2.8 L IS II and i doubt it 'll be that much...

but personally I think the 100 Macro would be a good addition

I'll definitely buy the 100 macro F/2.8 L IS one day...

Thanks for sharing your opinion ! I've so much wildlife to shoot there ;D

I think it remains very important for Canon to have an APS-C series with a good, quick body with weathersealing.

I totally agree with that fact ! Wildlife photography is a huge market for Canon and the 1.6x crop factor is essential ;)

In my opinion, if Canon produces 3 new bodies in 2012 (1DX, 5DX and 5D mark III), we won't see any 7D mark II this year  ;)

So right now i've my 40D, a 70-200 f/4 L IS, a speedlite flash 430 EX II, my Gitzo monopod and i've ordered the Loka backpack from  F-stop and Lenscoat gears.

here's a link for F-stop gear :

The 7d will come later this year with the 300f/4 L IS II ( i'm an optimistic guy :P )

If this rumor is true, hopefully it'll end all this crying posts ! And if that's true that's a smart move from Canon ;)

you know what, i don't really care about these bodies because i can't afford them for now and i might be wrong but we have already great bodies available ;) But a great lens, affordable and  weather sealed that i can use for wildlife photography that's what i'm waiting for !

Of course i'm talking about new versions of the 300 f/4 L IS (since 1997), 400 f/5.6 L (since 1993) and even 100-400 f/4-5.6 L IS (since 1998).

And i think (i should say i hope) one of them is coming this year 8)

I am certain 99% will not need 36mp images

How many of us do A2 or A1 print ?

In my opinion wiith 18 to 20mp you already have very high quality A3 printing... But once again i'm not taking photos in a studio.

I really hope Canon will not go into MP race

Me too, i don't need that kind of gear for wildlife photos but clean high ISO images, yes  ;)

I'm thinking about the 100mm macro f/2.8 L IS ; it could be a good answer in my opinion.

Take a look at this deep and detailed review :
